In situ tuning of a photonic band gap with laser pulses
2008
We report on light-induced optical tuning of colloidal photonic crystals doped with gold nanoparticles (Au-nps). By resonantly exciting the Au-np surface plasmon absorption with picosecond pulses at 0.53 micron in a standard pump-probe setup, we observed permanent changes in the stop band resonance around 1.7 micron, with blue wavelength shifts as large as 30 nm and associated to a nanoparticle reshaping. Fine tuning was achieved by controlling either the pulse energy or the irradiation time.
Optical investigation of the OH− groups in the LiNbO3 doped by copper
2019
Doping ions and OH− groups absorption bands spatial profiles were investigated for the case of congruent LiNbO3 single crystal grown by Czochralski technique. Doping was performed after the crystal...
The “accumulation effect” of positrons in the stack of foils, detected by measurements of the positron implantation profile
2013
The profiles of positrons implanted from the radioactive source 22Na into a stack of foils and plates are the subject of our experimental and theoretical studies. The measurements were performed using the depth scanning of positron implantation profile method, and the theoretical calculations using the phenomenological multi-scattering model (MSM). Several stacks consisting of silver, gold and aluminum foils, and titanium and germanium plates were investigated. We notice that the MSM describes well the experimental profiles; however when the stack consisting of silver and gold foils, the backscattering and linear absorption coefficients differ significantly from those reported in the litera…

Toward Photopatternable Thin Film Optical Sensors Utilizing Reactive Polyphenylacetylenes
2013
Substituted polyphenylacetylenes featuring reactive pentafluorophenyl (PFP) ester moieties are synthesized. Parts of the reactive PFP groups are then converted with a mono ortho-nitrobenzyl-protected diamine in variable ratios. Thin films are prepared from these copolymers and irradiated with UV light (λ = 365 nm), resulting in crosslinking of the irradiated areas and hence enabling a photopatterning. We found that during the photocrosslinking process, the excess of PFP ester moieties is stable and remained intact, enabling a subsequent post-polymerization modification step with amines. Noteworthy, this subsequent modification with amines results in a dramatically shift in the UV-vis absorp…
Evidence of nickel ions dimerization in NiWO4 and NiWO4-ZnWO4 solid solutions probed by EXAFS spectroscopy and reverse Monte Carlo simulations
2021
Abstract The existence of exchange-coupled Ni 2 + ions – the so-called magnetic dimers – in wolframite-type NiWO 4 and Zn c Ni 1 − c WO 4 solid solutions with high nickel content was discovered by X-ray absorption spectroscopy combined with reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) simulations. Temperature- (10–300 K) and composition-dependent X-ray absorption spectra were measured at the Ni K-edge, Zn K-edge, and W L 3 -edge of microcrystalline NiWO 4 , Zn c Ni 1 − c WO 4 and ZnWO 4 . Structural models were obtained from simultaneous analysis of the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra at three metal absorption edges using RMC simulations. The obtained radial distribution functions for…
Temperature dependence of the local structure and lattice dynamics of wurtzite-type ZnO
2014
Temperature-dependent (10–300 K) Zn K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra of polycrystalline wurtzitetype ZnO were analyzed using ab initio multiple-scattering theory and taking into account anisotropy of the crystallographic structure and thermal disorder. We employed two different simulation approaches: classical molecular dynamics (MD) and reverse Monte Carlo coupled with an evolutionary algorithm (RMC/EA method). The accuracy of several force-field models, which are commonly used in the MD simulations of bulk and nanostructured ZnO, was tested based on a comparison between the experimental and simulated Zn K-edge EXAFS spectra. It was found that available force…
Photo-oxidation of polypropylene/graphene nanoplatelets composites
2019
Abstract The photo-oxidation behaviour of polymer nanocomposites depends not only on the photo-oxidation behaviour of the matrix, but also on the chemical composition, on the physical properties of the nanoparticles and on the possible interactions between the two phases. In the case of nanocomposites with carbonaceous particles, the main effect is a photo-stabilization due to the absorption of the UV energy and the radical scavenging action. In this work we investigated the effect of the presence of graphene nanoplatelets on the photo-oxidation behaviour of the polypropylene. The presence of the graphene nanoplatelets improves the photo-resistance of the polypropylene and this effect incre…

Influence of a Crosslinker Containing an Azo Group on the Actuation Properties of a Photoactuating LCE System
2016
Photoactuating liquid crystalline elastomers (LCE) are promising candidates for an application as artificial muscles in microdevices. In this work, we demonstrate that by optimizing (1) the illumination conditions and (2) the mixture of azo monomer and azo crosslinker, thick films of an all-azo LCE can be prepared, which show a strong length change without bending during photoactuation. This becomes possible by working with white light (about 440 nm), whose absorption is low, leading to a large penetration depth. By adding an azo crosslinker to a previously prepared system, several improvements of the actuation properties—like a stronger photoactuation at lower operational temperatures—coul…
