ϕ meson width in the medium from proton induced ϕ production in nuclei

2004

We perform calculations for the production of $\phi$ mesons in nuclei at energies just above threshold and study the $A$ dependence of the cross section. We use results for the $\phi$ selfenergy in the medium obtained within a chiral unitary approach. We find a strong $A$ dependence which is tied to the distortion of the incident proton and to the absorption of the $\phi$ in its way out of the nucleus. The effect of this latter process reduces the cross section in about a factor two in heavy nuclei proving that the $A$ dependence of the cross section bears valuable information on the $\phi$ width in the nuclear medium. Calculations are done for energies which are accessible in an experiment…

Critical view on the deeply boundK−ppsystem

2006

We briefly review the situation around the claimed deeply bound ${K}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ states in different recent experiments and concentrate particularly on the state ${K}^{\ensuremath{-}}\mathit{pp}$ advocated by the FINUDA collaboration in nuclear ${K}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ absorption. We perform a theoretical simulation of the process and show that the peak in the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}p$ spectrum that was interpreted as a deep ${K}^{\ensuremath{-}}\mathit{pp}$ bound state corresponds mostly to the process ${K}^{\ensuremath{-}}pp\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\Lambda}p$ followed by final-state interactions of the produced particles with the daughter nucleus.

ϕ-Meson production at forward rapidity in p–Pb collisions at sNN=5.02 TeV and in pp collisions at s=2.76 TeV

2017

The first study of $\phi$-meson production in p–Pb collisions at forward and backward rapidity, at a nucleon– nucleon centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{S_{NN}}$= 5.02 TeV, has been performed with the ALICE apparatus at the LHC. The $\phi$-mesons have been identified in the dimuon decay channel in the transverse momentum ($p_T$) range 1 < $p_T$ < 7 GeV/c, both in the p-going (2.03 < y < 3.53) and the Pb-going (−4.46 < y < −2.96) directions — where $y$ stands for the rapidity in the nucleon–nucleon centre-of-mass — the integrated luminosity amounting to 5.01 ± 0.19 nb$^{−1}$ and 5.81 ± 0.20 nb$^{−1}$ , respectively, for the two data samples. Differential cross sections as a function of transverse …

Nuclear cross sections in 16O for β beam neutrinos at intermediate energies

2006

The nuclear cross sections for charged lepton production induced by $\beta$ beam neutrinos (anti-neutrinos) in $^{16}$O have been presented at intermediate energies corresponding to the Lorentz boost factor $\gamma<250 (150)$. The calculations for quasi-elastic lepton production includes the effect of Pauli blocking, Fermi motion and renormalization of weak transition strengths in the nuclear medium. The calculations for the inelastic lepton production is done in the $\Delta$ dominance model. The renormalization of $\Delta$ properties in a nuclear medium and final state interactions of pions with the final nucleus are taken into account. The results may be useful in performing feasibility s…

Critical review of [K- ppn] bound states

2008

We make a thorough study of the process of three body kaon absorption in nuclei, in connection with a recent FINUDA experiment which claims the existence of a deeply bound kaonic state from the observation of a peak in the Lambda d invariant mass distribution following K- absorption on Li6. We show that the peak is naturally explained in terms of K- absorption from three nucleons leaving the rest as spectators. We can also reproduce all the other observables measured in the same experiment and used to support the hypothesis of the deeply bound kaon state. Our study also reveals interesting aspects of kaon absorption in nuclei, a process that must be understood in order to make progress in t…

Pion vs. photon absorption on the deuteron

1995

Abstract Using an NN → ΔN transition potential fixed by the reaction pp ↔ dπ+ a good agreement can be obtained also for the reaction γd → pn in the Δ region. Further it is seen that the πNΔ and ϱNΔ parameters of the widely used Bonn potential, fitting the NN sector, yield a transition potential too weak to reproduce the pion production or absorption cross section.

A BeppoSAX study of the Galactic Z-source GX 340+0

2004

Abstract We present the results of a BeppoSAX broad band (0.1–200 keV) observation of the Z-source GX 340+0. The 1.8–30 keV continuum is well described by a blackbody ( kT BB ∼0.5 keV) plus a Comptonized component with seed photons temperature ∼ 1 keV and electron temperature ∼ 3 keV. A hard tail dominates the spectrum above 30 keV. It can be fitted using a bremsstrahlung component or, equivalently, a powerlaw (with a low-energy cutoff). We detect also a Gaussian line at ∼6.8 keV and an absorption edge at ∼9.2 keV. A low-energy (∼1 keV) unresolved feature needs further investigations.

Photon absorption on a proton-proton pair inHe3

1995

We calculate the total cross sections for different multiple transitions in photon absorption in a {sup 1}{ital S}{sub 0} {ital pp} pair embedded in a {sup 3}He nucleus. Employing two models, one involving only nucleon degrees of freedom, the other in addition the {Delta}(1232) isobar, we show that the {Delta} gives important effects even in transitions where the photon cannot couple directly to the isobar.

Resonant detection and production of axions with atoms

2018

The axions and axion-like particles can be detected via a resonant atomic or molecular transition induced by axion absorption. The signal obtained in this process is second order in the axion-electron interaction constant and hence small. In this chapter, it is demonstrated that this signal may become first order in the axion-electron interaction constant if we allow the interference between the axion-induced transition amplitude and the transition amplitude induced by the electromagnetic radiation. Additionally, we show that the conventional scheme of producing axions from photons in a magnetic field may be improved if the field is replaced by an atomic medium in which photons scattering …
