Reduction of ferricytochrome c catalyzed by optically active chromium(III) complexes
2009
The reduction rates of horse heart ferricytochrome c by amalgamated zinc or by electrolysis at fixed potential on a mercury pool as the cathode have been measured in a buffered solution at pH 7.5 by absorption spectrophotometry. In both cases, the reaction was strongly accelerated by the presence of the optically active complexes Lambda-[Cr(III)((S,S)-promp)H(2)O](+) (H(2)promp = N,N'-[(pyridine-2,6-diyl)bis(methylene)]-bis[(S)-proline]), Delta-[Cr(III)((R,R)-alamp)H(2)O](+) (H(2)alamp = N,N'-[(pyridine-2,6-diyl)bis(methylene)]-bis[(R)-alanine]) and Lambda-[Cr(III)((S,S)-alamp)(H(2)O)(2)](+). These were shown to undergo reversible one-electron reduction to the corresponding labile chromium(…
Determination of chromium in treated crayfish,Procambarus clarkii, by Electrothermal AAS: Study of chromium accumulation in different tissues
1986
In the present study, the authors investigated the accumulation of chromium in muscle, hepatopancreas, antennal glands, and gills of Procambarus clarkii (Girard) from Lake Albufera following Cr(VI)-exposure. Determinations of chromium were made by using Electrothermal Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy and the standard additions method.
Cadmium and lead in infant cereals — electrothermal-atomic absorption spectroscopic determination
1999
Because infant cereals are an important component of the infant diet from the fourth month of life onwards and therefore contribute to the dietetic intake of metals by infants, cadmium and lead were measured in samples of cereals commercially available in Spain. For this purpose an electrothermal atomic absorption (ET-AAS) method for determining cadmium and lead in these products was studied. The ET-AAS instrumental conditions and temperature/time furnace program were selected. The analytical parameters of the method (linearity, detection and quantification limits and precision) show its usefulness in measuring cadmium and lead in infant cereal products. The method was applied to eight diff…
Unveiling Electronic Transitions in Three Novel Chiral Azo-Compounds Using Linear and Nonlinear Circular Dichroism: A Theoretical−Experimental Study
2011
Herein, we report on the experimental and theoretically study of the linear absorption, electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra, as well as the two-photon absorption circular-linear dichroism measurements of three different chiral azo derivatives in dimethylsulfoxide solution. Using potential energy surfaces and frontier orbital analysis, we established the most stable conformation for each molecule and elucidated their different electronic transitions. Our theoretical calculations allowed us to unambiguously identify the spectral position of such transitions and correlate them with the spectral profiles observed in the two-photon absorption spectra. To further elucidate the characteris…
Conformational substates of ferricytochrome c revealed by combined optical absorption and electronic circular dichroism spectroscopy at cryogenic tem…
2010
We have investigated the heterogeneity of the Fe(III)–Met80 linkage of horse heart ferricytochrome c by probing the 695 nm charge transfer band with absorption and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectroscopy. In order to verify the connection between conformational substates of the Fe(III)–Met80 linkage and the 695 nm band spectral heterogeneity, we have performed experiments as a function of pH (neutral and acidic) and temperature (room and 20 K). At room temperature, the ECD spectrum is blue shifted with respect to the absorption one; the shift is more pronounced at acidic pH and is compatible with the presence of sub-bands. ECD measurements at 20 K highlighted the heterogeneous natu…
Carboxylated-xyloglucan and peptide amphiphile co-assembly in wound healing.
2021
Abstract Hydrogel wound dressings can play critical roles in wound healing protecting the wound from trauma or contamination and providing an ideal environment to support the growth of endogenous cells and promote wound closure. This work presents a self-assembling hydrogel dressing that can assist the wound repair process mimicking the hierarchical structure of skin extracellular matrix. To this aim, the co-assembly behaviour of a carboxylated variant of xyloglucan (CXG) with a peptide amphiphile (PA-H3) has been investigated to generate hierarchical constructs with tuneable molecular composition, structure, and properties. Transmission electron microscopy and circular dichroism at a low c…
The interaction of native DNA with iron(III)- N ,N'-ethylene-bis(salicylideneiminato)-chloride.
2004
Abstract The interaction between native calf thymus deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and Fe III - N , N ′ -ethylene-bis (salicylideneiminato)-chloride, Fe(Salen)Cl, was investigated in aqueous solutions by UV–visible (UV–vis) absorption, circular dichroism (CD), thermal denaturation and viscosity measurements. The results obtained from CD, UV–vis and viscosity measurements exclude DNA intercalation and can be interpreted in terms of an electrostatic binding between the Fe(Salen) + cation and the phosphate groups of DNA. The trend of the UV–vis absorption band of the Fe(Salen)Cl complex at different ratios [DNA phosphate ]/[Fe(Salen)Cl] and the large increase of the melting temperature of DNA in …
Confinement effects on the interactions of native DNA with Cu(II)-5-triethyl ammonium methyl salicylidene orto-phenylendiiminate in C12E4 liquid crys…
2008
Confinement effects of native calf thymus DNA interacting with the complex Cu(ii)-5-(triethylammoniummethyl)salicylidene ortho-phenylendiiminate (CuL(2+)) perchlorate in tetraethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C(12)E(4)) liquid crystals have been investigated by UV absorption spectrophotometry, circular dichroism (CD) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The results indicate the occurrence of dramatic structural changes of both the DNA and the CuL(2+)-DNA system, when going from aqueous solution to C(12)E(4) liquid crystals, due to confinement constrains imposed by the closed structure of C(12)E(4) reverse micelles. Further marked departures from the behaviour observed in aqueous soluti…
Element-specific magnetic properties of Co2(Mn1−xFex)Si films probed by x-ray magnetic circular/linear dichroism
2011
Element-specific magnetic properties of epitaxial Co${}_{2}$Fe${}_{x}$Mn${}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}$Si/MgO(100) Heusler films prepared by laser ablation are measured by circular dichroism in x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XMCD). Surface and bulk magnetization of the 100-nm-thick films are equal as tested by comparing the total electron yield and transmission measurements and follow the generalized Slater-Pauling rule. For Co${}_{2}$FeSi, the large magnetization of 6 ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{B}$ per formula unit indicates half-metallic behavior. Calculations using the local spin density approximation (LDA) result in a half-metallic band structure for this compound when an additional electron-electron…
Exchange coupling in the correlated electronic states of amorphous GdFe films
2013
The bulk sensitivity of hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy in combination with circularly polarized radiation of the P09 beamline at PETRA III enables the investigation of the magnetic properties of capped films. We have determined the temperature dependence of the magnetic circular dichroism in the Fe 2$p$ and in the Gd 3$d$ states in amorphous GdFe films. The magnetic dichroism reflects the stronger temperature dependence of Gd moments compared to Fe moments in agreement with mean-field models. We resolved the exchange split Gd 3${d}_{5/2}$ substates and found a significant temperature dependence of the splitting which is attributed to a temperature dependent part of the exchange energ…
