Abstract The absence of long range order in the glass structure allows to define only point defects in these materials. They are: 1) intrinsic defects—atomic size local deviation from short range order; 2) impurity defects—isolated impurity atoms or ions in the glass network; 3) intrinsic impurity defects—complexes consisting of the impurity atoms chemically bonded to one of the intrinsic defect atoms. The latter defects are characteristic for the doped glasses. Presence of point defects in glasses introduces new spectroscopic properties of these solid materials. Brown and green LAI mapping through spectral indices

Abstract When crops senescence, leaves remain until they fall off or are harvested. Hence, leaf area index (LAI) stays high even when chlorophyll content degrades to zero. Current LAI approaches from remote sensing techniques are not optimized for estimating LAI of senescent vegetation. In this paper a two-step approach has been proposed to realize simultaneous LAI mapping over green and senescent croplands. The first step separates green from brown LAI by means of a newly proposed index, ‘Green Brown Vegetation Index (GBVI)’. A Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectrometry device has been designed for glove box adaptation in CEA Valduc to analyze carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen at low concentration in nuclear materials. Increased intestinal permeability is a likely cause of various pathologies, such as allergies and metabolic or even cardiovascular disturbances. Intestinal permeability is found in many severe clinical situations and in common disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome. In these conditions, substances that are normally unable to cross the epithelial barrier gain access to the systemic circulation. Abstract A new class of biocompatible and scalable phospholipid vesicles was developed, aiming at improving the efficacy of baicalin on the skin. Phosphatidylcholine and baicalin (a natural polyphenol) were hydrated in two steps with a mixture of ethanol, glycerol, and propylene glycol at different ratios, and a low amount of water (4%). Hence, water was almost completely replaced by the co-solvents, which were never used before as predominant dispersing medium of phospholipid vesicles. The vesicles appeared three-dimensionally structured, forming a network that conferred a high viscosity to the dispersions. Local dynamic properties of the heme pocket in native and solvent-induced molten-globule-like states of cytochrome c

We report the Soret absorption band, down to cryogenic temperature, of native and molten-globule-like state of horse heart cytochrome c. The band profile is analyzed in terms of vibronic coupling of the heme normal modes to the electronic transition in the framework of the Franck-Condon approximation. From the temperature dependence of the Gaussian broadening and of the peak position, we obtain information on the 'bath' of low frequency harmonic motions of the heme group within the heme pocket. Wetting properties at the surface of iota-carrageenan-based edible films

International audience; Surface properties of edible films composed of a polymeric matrix of carrageenan in association with hydrophobic material were studied by contact angle measurements. The use of this technique not only in a static mode but also in a dynamic way enables investigation of surface hydrophobicity as well as surface wettability. Metal-ion complexes of Li+, Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Ba2+, Pb2+, Cd2+, Hg2+ with 4,6–O–benzylidene–N–(o–carboxyphenyl)–β–D–glucopyranosylamine were synthesized and isolated as solid products and characterized by analytical means as well as by spectral techniques, such as, 1H and 13C NMR, FTIR, absorption, FAB mass spectrometry, optical rotation and CD. While the alkali metal ions formed ML type of complexes, the other metal ions formed ML2 type complexes. Molecular weights of the complexes of Li+, Na+ and K+ were established based on the molecular-ion peaks in the FAB mass spectra.
