Abstract The installation of Building Automation Control Systems (BACs) in general is an effective action to achieve relevant energy savings. Commercial BACs, installed in residential or small offices, often include functions of lighting control, acting as Daylight-Linked Control Systems (DLCSs). Optimization of net power density in Reverse Electrodialysis

Abstract Reverse Electrodialysis (RED) extracts electrical energy from the salinity difference between two solutions using selective ion exchange membranes. In RED, conditions yielding a large net power density (NPD) are generally desired, due to the still large cost of the membranes. NPD depends on a large number of physical and geometric parameters. Systematic review: progression of beryllium sensitization to chronic beryllium disease

BACKGROUND The relevance of beryllium sensitization testing for occupational health practice and prevention is unclear. AIMS To analyse the natural course of beryllium sensitization and clarify the prognosis following cessation of exposure among sensitized workers. METHODS An electronic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Toxline and Cochrane databases supplemented by a manual search. Data abstraction and study quality assessment with adapted guideline checklists were performed independently by three reviewers. Ahlfors-regular distances on the Heisenberg group without biLipschitz pieces

We show that the Heisenberg group is not minimal in looking down. This answers Problem 11.15 in `Fractured fractals and broken dreams' by David and Semmes, or equivalently, Question 22 and hence also Question 24 in `Thirty-three yes or no questions about mappings, measures, and metrics' by Heinonen and Semmes. The non-minimality of the Heisenberg group is shown by giving an example of an Ahlfors $4$-regular metric space $X$ having big pieces of itself such that no Lipschitz map from a subset of $X$ to the Heisenberg group has image with positive measure, and by providing a Lipschitz map from the Heisenberg group to the space $X$ having as image the whole $X$. Affective values may shape how affect is linked to health and well-being. Much of the work to date, however, has focused mostly on younger, European American adult samples. Yet, emotional experiences are known to take on greater importance in later life. In the current study, 313 participants (65+ years old) from the Daily Experiences and Well-Being Study (DEWS) completed baseline interviews, questionnaires, and 4–5 days of ecological momentary assessments (EMA). Energy harvesting by waste acid/base neutralization via bipolar membrane reverse electrodialysis

Bipolar Membrane Reverse Electrodialysis (BMRED) can be used to produce electricity exploiting acid-base neutralization, thus representing a valuable route in reusing waste streams. The present work investigates the performance of a lab-scale BMRED module under several operating conditions. By feeding the stack with 1 M HCl and NaOH streams, a maximum power density of ~17 W m−2 was obtained at 100 A m−2 with a 10-triplet stack with a flow velocity of 1 cm s−1, while an energy density of ~10 kWh m−3 acid could be extracted by a complete neutralization. Diffraction by m-bonacci gratings

We present a simple diffraction experiment with m-bonacci gratings as a new interesting generalization of the Fibonacci ones. Diffraction by these nonconventional structures is proposed as a motivational strategy to introduce students to basic research activities. The Fraunhofer diffraction patterns are obtained with the standard equipment present in most undergraduate physics labs and are compared with those obtained with regular periodic gratings. We show that m-bonacci gratings produce discrete Fraunhofer patterns characterized by a set of diffraction peaks which positions are related to the concept of a generalized golden mean. Suffix Automata and Standard Sturmian Words

Blumer et al. showed (cf. [3,2]) that the suffix automaton of a word w must have at least |w|+1 states and at most 2|w|-1 states. In this paper we characterize the language L of all binary words w whose minimal suffix automaton S(w) has exactly |w| + 1 states; they are precisely all prefixes of standard Sturmian words. In particular, we give an explicit construction of suffix automaton of words that are palindromic prefixes of standard words. Moreover, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition on S(w) which ensures that if w ∈ L and a ∈ {0, 1} then wa ∈ L. JASP: a program to estimate discovery and exclusion limits in prospective studies of searches

Abstract This program computes the discovery and exclusion limits that can be set in prospective studies of new experiments in the search for new phenomena. It properly takes into account the different outcomes that the experiment can obtain including the possible signal and background fluctuations. The procedure gives in general more conservative limits than those obtained assuming that the experiment will obtain a number of events equal to the expected mean. The difference may be essential in those cases where only one experiment is foreseen to be carried out.
