Simple absorbing layer conditions for shallow wave simulations with Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics

2013

Abstract We study and implement a simple method, based on the Perfectly Matched Layer approach, to treat non reflecting boundary conditions with the Smoothed Particles Hydrodynamics numerical algorithm. The method is based on the concept of physical damping operating on a fictitious layer added to the computational domain. The method works for both 1D and 2D cases, but here we illustrate it in the case of 1D and 2D time dependent shallow waves propagating in a finite domain.

A generalization of the Carnahan–Starling approach with applications to four- and five-dimensional hard spheres

2018

Abstract Development of good equations of state for hard spheres is an important task in the study of real fluids. In a way consistent with other theoretical results, we generalize the famous Carnahan–Starling approach for arbitrary dimensions and apply it to four- and five-dimensional hard spheres. We obtain simple and integer representations for virial coefficients of lower orders and accurate equations of state. Since theoretically and practically validated, these results improve understanding of hard sphere fluids.

On numerical relativistic hydrodynamics and barotropic equations of state

2012

The characteristic formulation of the relativistic hydrodynamic equations (Donat et al 1998 J. Comput. Phys. 146 58), which has been implemented in many relativistic hydro-codes that make use of Godunov-type methods, has to be slightly modified in the case of evolving barotropic flows. For a barotropic equation of state, a removable singularity appears in one of the eigenvectors. The singularity can be avoided by means of a simple renormalization which makes the system of eigenvectors well defined and complete. An alternative strategy for the particular case of barotropic flows is discussed.

Which Reaches the Bottom First?

2008

A well-known classroom demonstration involves the rolling of hollow and solid objects down an incline.1 The fact that the objects roll at different rates can be used as a starting point in introducing students to rotational dynamics and rotational kinetic energy. In this paper we describe a simple quantitative version of the demonstration that is suitable for use as a laboratory experiment.

On the relation between 2+1 Einstein gravity and Chern Simons theory

1999

A simple example is given to show that the gauge equivalence classes of physical states in Chern Simons theory are not in one-to-one correspondence with those of Einstein gravity in three spacetime dimensions. The two theories are therefore not equivalent. It is shown that including singular metrics into general relativity has more, and in fact a quite counter-intuitive, impact on the theory than one naively expects.

Optimized Hermite-Gaussian ansatz functions for dispersion-managed solitons

2001

Abstract By theoretical analysis, we show that the usual procedure of simply projecting the dispersion-managed (DM) soliton profile onto the basis of an arbitrary number of Hermite-gaussian (HG) polynomials leads to relatively accurate ansatz functions, but does not correspond to the best representation of DM solitons. Based on the minimization of the soliton dressing, we present a simple procedure, which provides highly accurate representation of DM solitons on the basis of a few HG polynomials only.

Bootstrapping pentagon functions

2018

In PRL 116 (2016) no.6, 062001, the space of planar pentagon functions that describes all two-loop on-shell five-particle scattering amplitudes was introduced. In the present paper we present a natural extension of this space to non-planar pentagon functions. This provides the basis for our pentagon bootstrap program. We classify the relevant functions up to weight four, which is relevant for two-loop scattering amplitudes. We constrain the first entry of the symbol of the functions using information on branch cuts. Drawing on an analogy from the planar case, we introduce a conjectural second-entry condition on the symbol. We then show that the information on the function space, when comple…

A star-product approach to noncompact Quantum Groups

1995

Using duality and topological theory of well behaved Hopf algebras (as defined in [2]) we construct star-product models of non compact quantum groups from Drinfeld and Reshetikhin standard deformations of enveloping Hopf algebras of simple Lie algebras. Our star-products act not only on coefficient functions of finite-dimensional representations, but actually on all $C^\infty$ functions, and they exist even for non linear (semi-simple) Lie groups.

Numerical viscosity in simulations of the two-dimensional Kelvin-Helmholtz instability

2020

The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability serves as a simple, well-defined setup for assessing the accuracy of different numerical methods for solving the equations of hydrodynamics. We use it to extend our previous analysis of the convergence and the numerical dissipation in models of the propagation of waves and in the tearing-mode instability in magnetohydrodynamic models. To this end, we perform two-dimensional simulations with and without explicit physical viscosity at different resolutions. A comparison of the growth of the modes excited by our initial perturbations allows us to estimate the effective numerical viscosity of two spatial reconstruction schemes (fifth-order monotonicity preservin…

Electromagnetic Multipole Moments and Transitions

2007

In the preceding chapter we constructed and discussed the simplest possible nuclear wave functions. This construction was done at the mean-field level. No account was taken of configuration mixing caused by the nuclear residual interaction. These simple wave functions produce degeneracies in energy spectra. This is contrary to experimental data, so improved wave functions are called for.
