The Computer Code for Calculations of the Positron Distribution in a Layered Stack Systems

2014

In this paper we present experimental and theoretical studies of the implantation pro le of positrons emitted fromNa radionuclide into layered sample. The measured pro le for the nonsymmetrical, around the positron emitter, stack of aluminium and silver foils was measured using the depth scanning of implantation pro le technique. For the description of the obtained results two theoretical approaches were applied. The rst one was the Monte Carlo simulation using the GEANT4 tool kit. The generated pro le does not reproduce accurately the experimental pro le. We proposed the multiple scattering model based on the fact that a positron due to backscattering can travel as an energetic particle se…

A discrimination technique for extensive air showers based on multiscale, lacunarity and neural network analysis

2011

We present a new method for the identification of extensive air showers initiated by different primaries. The method uses the multiscale concept and is based on the analysis of multifractal behaviour and lacunarity of secondary particle distributions together with a properly designed and trained artificial neural network. In the present work the method is discussed and applied to a set of fully simulated vertical showers, in the experimental framework of ARGO-YBJ, to obtain hadron to gamma primary separation. We show that the presented approach gives very good results, leading, in the 1–10 TeV energy range, to a clear improvement of the discrimination power with respect to the existing figu…

Rule-guided identification of cosmic-ray patterns in PLASTEX

1992

Some techniques devised in the computer science fields of pattern recognition and expert systems are being applied to the interpretation of EAS responses in the PLASTEX experiment. An attempt is made to codity in a set of rules the expertise of trained researchers who are able to recognize and classify different hit patterns even in the presence of noisy background, and in spite of imperfections in the detector response. The patterns expected to be useful include, but are not limited to, track patterns. The software described here, as a progress report, automatically finds patterns corresponding to isolated tracks, and patterns composed of tracks that connect with each other in a layer of d…

SEA presidential address: Group connectivity and cooperation

2011

A model-free methodology is used for the first time to estimate a daily volatility index (VIBEX-NEW) for the Spanish financial market. We use a public data set of daily option prices to compute this index and showthat daily changes in VIBEXNEW display a negative, tight contemporaneous relationship with IBEX daily returns, contrary to other common volatility indicators, as an implied volatility indicator or a GARCH(1,1) conditional volatility model. This relationship is approximately symmetric to the sign on VIBEX-NEW changes and asymmetric to the IBEX-35 returns sign, which make it clearly a suitable volatility index for the Spanish stock market. We also examine the relationship between curr…

Stochastic description of traffic breakdown

2003

We present a comparison of nucleation in an isothermal-isochoric container with traffic congestion on a one-lane freeway. The analysis is based, in both cases, on the probabilistic description by stochastic master equations. Further we analyze the characteristic features of traffic breakdowns. To describe this phenomenon we apply the stochastic model regarding the jam emergence to the formation of a large car cluster on the highway.

Sharp capacity estimates for annuli in weighted $$\mathbf {R}^n$$ R n and in metric spaces

2016

We obtain estimates for the nonlinear variational capacity of annuli in weighted $$\mathbf {R}^n$$ and in metric spaces. We introduce four different (pointwise) exponent sets, show that they all play fundamental roles for capacity estimates, and also demonstrate that whether an end point of an exponent set is attained or not is important. As a consequence of our estimates we obtain, for instance, criteria for points to have zero (resp. positive) capacity. Our discussion holds in rather general metric spaces, including Carnot groups and many manifolds, but it is just as relevant on weighted $$\mathbf {R}^n$$ . Indeed, to illustrate the sharpness of our estimates, we give several examples of …

A new constructive method using the theory of invariants to obtain material behavior laws

2006

International audience; The aim of this paper is to present a constructive method to derive mechanical behavior laws using the Theory of Invariants and Continuum Thermodynamics. More precisely, we want to construct, in a general way, the state or dissipation potential in a polynomial form given a set of variables V and the material symmetry group S. For this purpose, we show how to obtain a set of generators for the S-invariant polynomials of V. Then, using the Grœbner basis concept, we write all the decompositions of a polynomial of a given degree.

Blenders near polynomial product maps of $\mathbb C^2$

2021

In this paper we show that if $p$ is a polynomial which bifurcates then the product map $(z,w)\mapsto(p(z),q(w))$ can be approximated by polynomial skew products possessing special dynamical objets called blenders. Moreover, these objets can be chosen to be of two types : repelling or saddle. As a consequence, such product map belongs to the closure of the interior of two different sets : the bifurcation locus of $H_d(\mathbb P^2)$ and the set of endomorphisms having an attracting set of non-empty interior. In an independent part, we use perturbations of H\'enon maps to obtain examples of attracting sets with repelling points and also of quasi-attractors which are not attracting sets.

A New Set of Quartic Trivariate Polynomial Equations for Stratified Camera Self-calibration under Zero-Skew and Constant Parameters Assumptions

2012

This paper deals with the problem of self-calibrating a moving camera with constant parameters. We propose a new set of quartic trivariate polynomial equations in the unknown coordinates of the plane at infinity derived under the no-skew assumption. Our new equations allow to further enforce the constancy of the principal point across all images while retrieving the plane at infinity. Six such polynomials, four of which are independent, are obtained for each triplet of images. The proposed equations can be solved along with the so-called modulus constraints and allow to improve the performance of existing methods.

New facets and an enhanced branch-and-cut for the min-max K -vehicles windy rural postman problem

2011

[EN] The min-max windy rural postman problem is a multiple vehicle version of the windy rural postman problem, WRPP, which consists of minimizing the length of the longest route to find a set of balanced routes for the vehicles. In a previous paper, an ILP formulation and a partial polyhedral study were presented, and a preliminary branch-and-cut algorithm that produced some promising computational results was implemented. In this article, we present further results for this problem. We describe several new facet-inducing inequalities obtained from the WRPP, as well as some inequalities that have to be satisfied by any optimal solution. We present an enhanced branch-and-cut algorithm that t…
