A rotating wheel system for the detection of spontaneously fissioning nuclides from heavy ion reactions

1981

Abstract A rotating wheel system for the detection of spontaneously fissioning reaction products from heavy ion reactions was developed. In this system products recoiling from a rotating target wheel are stopped in a catcher foil stack which can be rotated at various velocities up to 80 rotations per second. All products emitted within a wide emission cone are stopped in the catcher foils and are rotated into shielded positions with stationary fission-track detectors positioned on both sides of each rotating foil. This technique allows a sensitive detection of spontaneously fissioning nuclides over a broad range of half-lives from 1 ms to about 1 d. By post-bombardment exposure of the catch…

Virtual lock-and-key approach: The in silico revival of Fischer model by means of molecular descriptors

2010

Abstract In the last years the application of computational methodologies in the medicinal chemistry fields has found an amazing development. All the efforts were focused on the searching of new leads featuring a close affinity on a specific biological target. Thus, different molecular modeling approaches in simulation of molecular behavior for a specific biological target were employed. In spite of the increasing reliability of computational methodologies, not always the designed lead, once synthesized and screened, are suitable for the chosen biological target. To give another chance to these compounds, this work tries to resume the old concept of Fischer lock-and-key model. The same can …

Graph recursive least squares filter for topology inference in causal data processes

2017

In this paper, we introduce the concept of recursive least squares graph filters for online topology inference in data networks that are modelled as Causal Graph Processes (CGP). A Causal Graph Process (CGP) is an auto regressive process in the time series associated to different variables, and whose coefficients are the so-called graph filters, which are matrix polynomials with different orders of the graph adjacency matrix. Given the time series of data at different variables, the goal is to estimate these graph filters, hence the associated underlying adjacency matrix. Previously proposed algorithms have focused on a batch approach, assuming implicitly stationarity of the CGP. We propose…

Investigation of electrode material – redox couple systems for reverse electrodialysis processes. Part II: Experiments in a stack with 10–50 cell pai…

2013

Abstract The performances of reverse electrodialysis depend on several factors, including the nature of the electrode material and of the redox processes adopted to make possible the conversion between chemical potential and electric power. In this paper the possible utilization of various redox processes (reduction/oxidation of iron species, oxidation and reduction of water, oxidation of chlorine and reduction of water) was studied in a stack equipped with 10–50 cell pairs and by focused electrolyses in a three compartment cell. The effect of selected redox processes on power density output and eventual contamination of saline solutions flowing in the stack was evaluated in detail. The eff…

Cost-effective Multiresolution schemes for Shock Computations

2009

Harten's Multiresolution framework has provided a fruitful environment for the development of adaptive codes for hyperbolic PDEs. The so-called cost-effective alternative [4,8,21] seeks to achieve savings in the computational cost of the underlying numerical technique, but not in the overall memory requirements of the code. Since the data structure of the basic algorithm does not need to be modified, it provides a set of tools that can be easily implemented into existing codes and that can be very useful in order to speed up the numerical simulations involved in the testing process that is associated to the development of new numerical schemes.
In this paper we present two different applica…

Mixed finite elements for nonlocal elastic multilayered composite plate refined theories

2020

Abstract A novel mixed finite element formulation for the layerwise analysis of nonlocal multilayered composite plates is presented. The finite elements are formulated starting from the weak form of a set of governing equations for the laminate layers that were deduced via the Reissner Mixed Variational Theorem. The primary variables, namely displacements and out-of-plane stresses, are expressed at layer level as through-the-thickness expansions of suitable selected functions with coefficients approximated by the finite element scheme. The through-the-thickness expansion order is considered as a free parameter. This way, finite elements for different refined higher order plate theories can …

A Qualified Kolmogorovian Account of Probabilistic Contextuality

2014

We describe a mathematical language for determining all possible patterns of contextuality in the dependence of stochastic outputs of a system on its deterministic inputs. The central principle contextuality-by-default is that the outputs indexed by mutually incompatible values of inputs are stochastically unrelated; but they can be coupled imposed a joint distribution on in a variety of ways. A system is characterized by a pattern of which outputs can be "directly influenced" by which inputs a primitive relation, hypothetical or normative, and by certain constraints imposed on the outputs such as Bell-type inequalities or their quantum analogues. The set of couplings compatible with these …

The Algorithm of a Game-Based System in the Relation between an Operator and a Technical Object in Management of E-Commerce Logistics Processes with …

2021

Machine learning (ML) is applied in various logistic processes utilizing innovative techniques (e.g., the use of drones for automated delivery in e-commerce). Early challenges showed the insufficient drones’ steering capacity and cognitive gap related to the lack of theoretical foundation for controlling algorithms. The aim of this paper is to present a game-based algorithm of controlling behaviours in the relation between an operator (OP) and a technical object (TO), based on the assumption that the game is logistics-oriented and the algorithm is to support ML applied in e-commerce optimization management. Algebraic methods, including matrices, Lagrange functions, systems of differential e…

Heuristics and Memory Strategies Used by Mathematicians

1996

The study of the cognitive processes involved in learning and acquisition of technically complex material is a main focus of interest for basic and applied research. Our research program tries to identh memory aids and heuristic training strategies useful for improving mathematics performance. Part of the effectiveness of a course, designed by taking into account knowledge about the cognitive system, has to do with the development of an adequate relationship with the belief system of the learner. As a first step in that direction, we present a survey of the opinions of a group of mathematicians about the dd€iculty of their subjecr matter, the strategies they use spontaneously to overcome di…

An experimental testbed of an Internet of Underwater Things

2020

A number of critical features have so far slowed down the realization of an Internet of Underwater Things. The most relevant of these aspects are related to the unreliability of the communication channel, the long propagation delay and the effect of severe multi-path and fading. This paper presents the design and development of a hybrid underwater-terrestrial IoT where different underwater sensors collect heterogeneous data and use marine acoustic modems to send information to a gateway device; this is able to set up a long distance link, implemented through a LoRaWAN connection, to forward data to a remote cloud for further processing. Performance of this system has been tested in a real s…
