An In-Depth Experimental Comparison of RNTNs and CNNs for Sentence Modeling

2017

The goal of modeling sentences is to accurately represent their meaning for different tasks. A variety of deep learning architectures have been proposed to model sentences, however, little is known about their comparative performance on a common ground, across a variety of datasets, and on the same level of optimization. In this paper, we provide such a novel comparison for two popular architectures, Recursive Neural Tensor Networks (RNTNs) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). Although RNTNs have been shown to work well in many cases, they require intensive manual labeling due to the vanishing gradient problem. To enable an extensive comparison of the two architectures, this paper empl…

Including invariances in SVM remote sensing image classification

2012

This paper introduces a simple method to include invariances in support vector machine (SVM) for remote sensing image classification. We rely on the concept of virtual support vectors, by which the SVM is trained with both the selected support vectors and synthetic examples encoding the invariance of interest. The algorithm is very simple and effective, as demonstrated in two particularly interesting examples: invariance to the presence of shadows and to rotations in patchbased image segmentation. The improved accuracy (around +6% both in OA and Cohen's κ statistic), along with the simplicity of the approach encourage its use and extension to encode other invariances and other remote sensin…

Porcine Model for Deep Superior Epigastric Artery Perforator Flap Harvesting: Anatomy and Technique

2018

BACKGROUND Microsurgical training on rats before starting with clinical practice is a well-established routine. Animal model training is less widespread for perforator flaps, although these flaps represent a technical challenge. Unlike other flaps, they require specific technical skills that need to be adequately trained on a living model 1 : a cadaver is not enough because no bleeding, vessel damage, or vasospasm can be simulated. 2 The purpose of this study was to assess the suitability of the porcine abdomen as a training model for the deep inferior epigastric artery perforator (DIEAP) flap, commonly used in human breast reconstruction. METHODS A female swine (Sus scrofa domesticus, ssp;…

HD-RTI: an adaptive multi-light imaging approach for the quality assessment of manufactured surfaces

2021

International audience; Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) is a technique for estimating surface local angular reflectance from a set of stereo-photometric images captured with variable lighting directions. The digitization of this information fully fits into the industry 4.0 approach and makes it possible to characterize the visual properties of a surface. The proposed method, namely HD-RTI, is based on the coupling of RTI and HDR imaging techniques. This coupling is carried out adaptively according to the response at each angle of illumination. The proposed method is applied to five industrial samples which have high local variations of reflectivity because of their heterogeneity of…

Modeling of surface structure formation after laser irradiation

2011

The Stefan problem in a semi-infinite media under laser irradiation is considered. It is related to the melting and solidification processes, resulting in certain surface structure after the solidification. A simple model, as well as a more sophisticated one is proposed to describe this process. The latter model allows us to calculate the surface profile by solving a system of two nonlinear differential equations, if the shape of the solid-liquid interface is known. It has to be found as a solution of two-phases Stefan problem. The results of example calculations by the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method are presented, assuming that the solid-liquid interface has a parabolic shape. The calcula…

GEPOL: An improved description of molecular surfaces. III. A new algorithm for the computation of a solvent-excluding surface

1994

To understand and calculate the interactions of a solute with a solvent, a good method of computing the molecular surface is needed. Three kinds of surfaces may be used: the van der Waals Surface, the Accessible Surface, and the Molecular Surface. The latter is redefined in this article as the Solvent-Excluding Surface. The new algorithm for computing the Solvent-Excluding Surface included in the GEPOL93 program is described. GEPOL93 follows the same concept as former versions of GEPOL but with a full new algorithm. Thus, it computes the Solvent-Excluding Surface by filling the spaces not accessible to the solvent with a set of new spheres. The computation is controlled by three parameters:…

Digit replacement: A generic map for nonlinear dynamical systems

2016

A simple discontinuous map is proposed as a generic model for nonlinear dynamical systems. The orbit of the map admits exact solutions for wide regions in parameter space and the method employed (digit manipulation) allows the mathematical design of useful signals, such as regular or aperiodic oscillations with specific waveforms, the construction of complex attractors with nontrivial properties as well as the coexistence of different basins of attraction in phase space with different qualitative properties. A detailed analysis of the dynamical behavior of the map suggests how the latter can be used in the modeling of complex nonlinear dynamics including, e.g., aperiodic nonchaotic attracto…

Space partitioning of exchange-correlation functionals with the projector augmented-wave method

2018

We implement a Becke fuzzy cells type space partitioning scheme for the purposes of exchange-correlation within the GPAW projector augmented-wave method based density functional theory code. Space partitioning is needed in the situation where one needs to treat different parts of a combined system with different exchange-correlation functionals. For example, bulk and surface regions of a system could be treated with functionals that are specifically designed to capture the distinct physics of those regions. Here, we use the space partitioning scheme to implement the quasi-nonuniform exchange-correlation scheme, which is a useful practical approach for calculating metallic alloys on the gene…

Parametric Design of Sailing Hull Shapes

2006

The author presents an original algorithm aimed at automatically generating the hull shape of a sailing yacht starting from an initial set of parameters. The procedure consists of two steps. First one keel line and a Designed Water Line (DWL in the following) are faired according to a set of parameters, say length of water line, canoe body draft, stem angle and some adimensional coefficients. This information is then used to fair the hull surface, which must in turn fulfil more prerequisites (parameters like displaty cement, floatation area and related coefficients). The hull is defined by means of a B-spline surface, the fairing of which is ensured by allowing for all the imposed objective…

Active magnetic bearing design study

2012

The purpose of this paper is to propose a useful method to implement active magnetic bearings (AMBs) on an existing rotating shaft which rotates on conventional bearings. This is feasible if AMBs can produce the same reaction loads of conventional ones and if the size of vane is large enough to host an AMB. As this substitution could offer some difficulties due to the different size between magnetic bearings and conventional ones, a set of equations are performed to show that a variation of some parameters can solve this problem. The journal ratio is the geometrical parameter introduced to develop the present analysis. The variation of journal ratio does not produce a variation of the pole…
