Evolutionary approach to coverage testing of IEC 61499 function block applications

The paper addresses the problem of coverage testing of industrial automation software represented in the IEC 61499 standard, one of the recent standards for distributed control system design. Contrary to model-based testing (MBT), the paper focuses on implementation coverage, not model coverage. An approach based on evolutionary algorithms is presented which generates coverage test suites for both basic and composite IEC 61499 function blocks. An adaptive probabilistic approach to goal-level imitation learning

Imitation learning has been recognized as a promising technique to teach robots advanced skills. It is based on the idea that robots could learn new behaviors by observing and imitating the behaviors of other skilled actors. We propose an adaptive probabilistic graphical model which copes with three core issues of any imitative behavior: observation, representation and reproduction of skills. New concepts and techniques are replacing traditional methods of water quality parameters measurement systems. This paper proposed a new way of potable water quality assessment in distribution network using Multi Sensor Array (MSA). An Empirical Set of Metrics for Embedded Systems Testing

Editor’s note: Selecting the right platform for an embedded system is a challenging task, because there are no systematic methodologies for comprehensive evaluation and comparison of competing alternatives. This article partially addresses this problem by formulating a set of relevant metrics and an evaluation methodology. Influence of the type of illumination on the measurement of the modulation transfer function in the living human eye: A theoretical study

Abstract Applications such as refractive surgery demand an objective appraisal of the retinal image quality. The modulation transfer function (MTF) provides that information when measured directly. Moreover, the MTF obtained using a simple and objective method such as that described in this paper allows the neural contrast sensitivity function (CSF) to be obtained from the global CSF and the MTF. Evaluation of user experience goal fulfillment

In this paper, the results of a user experience (UX) goal evaluation study are reported. The study was carried out as a part of a research and development project of a novel remote operator station (ROS) for container gantry crane operation in port yards. The objectives of the study were both to compare the UXs of two different user interface concepts and to give feedback on how well the UX goals experience of safe operation, sense of control, and feeling of presence are fulfilled with the developed ROS prototype. The Effectiveness of LDOCE Definitions for Concrete and Abstract Nouns in Headword- and Picture-Identification Tasks

Abstract LDOCE uses a defining vocabulary to make their definitions intelligible to the user. Critics claim this policy may result in imprecise definitions, something especially noticeable in certain concrete and abstract words that are difficult to define by a definition only. This paper examines to what extent LDOCE definitions of such words help learners identify the objects and words being defined. Dynamics of Vertebral Column Observed by Stereovision and Recurrent Neural Network Model

A new non-invasive method for investigation of movement of selected points on the vertebral column is presented. The registration of position of points marked on patient's body is performed by 4 infrared cameras. This experiment enables to reconstruct 3-dimensional trajectories of displacement of marked points. We introduce recurrent neural networks as formal nonlinear dynamical models of each point trajectory. These models are based only on experimental data and are set up of minimal number of parameters. Therefore they are suitable for pattern recognition problems.

A generalizability measure for program synthesis with genetic programming

The generalizability of programs synthesized by genetic programming (GP) to unseen test cases is one of the main challenges of GP-based program synthesis. Recent work showed that increasing the amount of training data improves the generalizability of the programs synthesized by GP. However, generating training data is usually an expensive task as the output value for every training case must be calculated manually by the user.
