Educational Inequalities and Their Impact on Social Mobility of the second generation: A Comparison of North Africans in France and the Second Genera…

2013

International audience; This paper aims to compare the educational outcomes of children of immigrants in France and in the US to understand the educational inequalities and opportunities for social mobility for the second generation in both countries. The comparison is focused on children from two groups: North Africans in France and Mexicans in the US. By using two longitudinal datasets, the French Educational Panel Survey and Add Health, we examine aspirations, expectations and attainment in secondary education in the two contexts. We explore in particular the role of parental education on attainment. We also utilize in-depth interviews to understand their educational experiences and thei…

2003

The set of themes of the city is approached primarily by the means of the residential density. This concept is analyzed from a purely conceptual point of view, then more theoretical (thus making use of rather traditional econometric models: Clark, Newling) for finally being applied to the agglomeration dijonnaise like with its urban surface. One releases the great urban structures thus revealing an intermediate city between the model monocentric and polycentric. The two components are analyzed successively starting from the concept of residential density. Taking as assumption that the cities are dynamic, the second stage is that of urban sprawl out. A first introductory approach attempts to…

Triple life of Sports students through the prism of territory

2018

A student life comprising regular study time, coupled with investment in Sport (training or team coaching) and a few hours of salaried work, is a configuration favorable to academic success (understood as ability to get degree) in Sport studies (STAPS) at the University of Burgundy. But, against all statistical probability, students having registered without any selection in the branch campus of Le Creusot are more successful than those studying in the main campus of Dijon, despite individual characteristics similar or less favorable: in first year, emerges a territory effect. Using logistic regression models, based on various data (questionnaires of students enrolled in Sports in 2012-2013…

Pathways to higher education : social and gender influences

2018

This paper explores the extent to which educational pathways in France and Switzerland facilitate access to higher education for male and female youths from lower cultural capital backgrounds (whose parents have not experienced themselves higher education), thus being the first of their families to follow higher education. We use panel data in the two countries to analyze the access to different pathways to higher education. Our multinomial logistic regression models show two different educational pathways with regard to social reproduction and gender inequalities. In France, vocationally oriented pathways foster higher education access for women with lower cultural capital. In Switzerland …
