Development of a low-energy radioactive ion beam facility for the MARA separator

A low-energy radioactive ion beam facility for the production and study of nuclei produced close to the proton drip line is under development at the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyv\"askyl\"a, Finland. The facility will take advantage of the mass selectivity of the recently commissioned MARA vacuum-mode mass separator. The ions selected by MARA will be stopped and thermalised in a small-volume gas cell prior to extraction and further mass separation. The gas cell design allows for resonance laser ionisation/spectroscopy both in-gas-cell and in-gas-jet. The facility will include experimental setups allowing ion counting, mass measurement and decay spectroscopy.

Vacuum electrical breakdown conditioning study in a parallel plate electrode pulsed dc system

Conditioning of a metal structure in a high-voltage system is the progressive development of resistance to vacuum arcing over the operational life of the system. This is, for instance, seen during the initial operation of radio frequency (rf) cavities in particle accelerators. It is a relevant topic for any technology where breakdown limits performance and where conditioning continues for a significant duration of system run time. Tritium retention measurements by accelerator mass spectrometry and full combustion of W-coated and uncoated CFC tiles from the JET divertor

Abstract Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) and the full combustion method (FCM) followed by liquid scintillation counting were applied to quantitatively determine the tritium retention in the tungsten-coated carbon fibre composites (CFC), in comparison to uncoated CFC tiles from the JET divertor. The tiles were adjacent and exposed to plasma operations between 2007 and 2009. The tritium depth profiles are showing that the tritium retention on the W-coated tile was reduced by a factor of 13.5 in comparison to the uncoated tile whereas the bulk tritium concentration is approximately the same for both tiles.

First demonstration of Doppler-free 2-photon in-source laser spectroscopy at the ISOLDE-RILIS

Abstract Collinear Doppler-free 2-photon resonance ionization has been applied inside a hot cavity laser ion source environment at CERN-ISOLDE. An injection-seeded Ti:sapphire ring laser was used to generate light pulses with a Fourier-limited linewidth for high-resolution spectroscopy. Using a molybdenum foil as a reflective surface positioned at the end of the target transfer line, rubidium was successfully ionized inside the hot cavity. The results are presented alongside previously obtained data from measurements performed at the RISIKO mass separator at Mainz University, where collinear and perpendicular ionization geometries were tested inside an RFQ ion guide. Large-angle production of charged pions with 3-12.9 GeV/c incident protons on nuclear targets

Measurements of the double-differential pi(+/-) production cross section in the momentum range 100 <= p <= 800 MeV/c and angle range 0.35 <= theta <= 2.15 rad in proton-beryllium, proton-carbon, proton-aluminium, proton-copper, proton-tin, proton-tantalum, and proton-lead collisions are presented. The data were taken with the large-acceptance HARP detector in the T9 beam line of the CERN PS. The pions were produced by proton beams in a momentum range from 3 to 12.9 GeV/c hitting a target with a thickness of 5% of a nuclear interaction length. Measurements of the 90,91,92,94,96 Zr n, gamma cross-sections at n_TOF

Neutron capture cross sections of the 90,91,92,94,96Zr have been measured over the energy range from 1 eV to 1 MeV at the spallation neutron facility n TOF at CERN in 2003. The innovative features of the neutron beam, in particular the high instantaneous flux, the high energy resolution and low background, together with improvements of the neutron sensitivity of the capture detectors make this facility unique for neutron-induced reaction cross section measurements with much improved accuracy. The preliminary results of the Zr measurements show capture resonance strengths generally smaller than in previous measurements. Peer Reviewed

Neutron yield from carbon, light- and heavy-water thick targets irradiated by 40MeV deuterons

Abstract Angular and energy distributions of neutrons produced by the interaction of deuterons of 40 MeV in carbon, light- and heavy-water targets, in which they are stopped, have been measured by the activation method. A discrepancy with a time-of-flight measurement for d + C has been found. The results are compared with a Monte-Carlo calculation and are discussed in the frame of building a deuteron-to-neutron converter for the SPIRAL2 radioactive ion-beam facility.

Weak quadrupole moments

Collective effects in deformed atomic nuclei present possible avenues of study on the non-spherical distribution of neutrons and the violation of the local Lorentz invariance. We introduce the weak quadrupole moment of nuclei, related to the quadrupole distribution of the weak charge in the nucleus. The weak quadrupole moment produces tensor weak interaction between the nucleus and electrons and can be observed in atomic and molecular experiments measuring parity nonconservation. The dominating contribution to the weak quadrupole is given by the quadrupole moment of the neutron distribution, therefore, corresponding experiments should allow one to measure the neutron quadrupoles. High-accuracy mass spectrometry of fission products with Penning traps

Mass measurements of fission products based on Penning-trap technique are reviewed in this article. More than 300 fission products have been measured with JYFLTRAP, ISOLTRAP, CPT, LEBIT and TITAN Penning traps with a typical precision of δm/m ≈ 10−7 − 10−8. In general, the results agree well with each other. The new data provide a valuable source of information and a challenge for the future development of theoretical mass models as well as for obtaining a deeper insight into microscopic properties of atomic nuclei as measured, for example, via key mass differentials. A search for events with large missing transverse momentum, jets, and at least two tau leptons has been performed using 2 fb[superscript −1] of proton–proton collision data at √s = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. No excess above the Standard Model background expectation is observed and a 95% CL upper limit on the visible cross section for new phenomena is set, where the visible cross section is defined by the product of cross section, branching fraction, detector acceptance and event selection efficiency.
