CellLineNavigator: a workbench for cancer cell line analysis

2012

The CellLineNavigator database, freely available at http://www.medicalgenomics.org/celllinenavigator, is a web-based workbench for large scale comparisons of a large collection of diverse cell lines. It aims to support experimental design in the fields of genomics, systems biology and translational biomedical research. Currently, this compendium holds genome wide expression profiles of 317 different cancer cell lines, categorized into 57 different pathological states and 28 individual tissues. To enlarge the scope of CellLineNavigator, the database was furthermore closely linked to commonly used bioinformatics databases and knowledge repositories. To ensure easy data access and search abili…

Molecular Cloning of aCandida albicans Gene (SSB1) Coding for a Protein Related to the Hsp70 Family

1997

We have cloned and sequenced a Candida albicans gene (SSB1) encoding a potential member of the heat-shock protein seventy (hsp70) family. The protein encoded by this gene contains 613 amino acids and shows a high degree (85%) of sequence identity to the ssb subfamily (ssb1 and ssb2) of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae hsp70 family. The transcribed mRNA (2·1 kb) is present in similar amounts both in yeast and germ tube cells of C. albicans. The sequence data has been deposited in the GenBank data library under the Accession Number X97723. © John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Isolation of a putative prolyl-tRNA synthetase (CaPRS) gene fromCandida albicans

1997

We have isolated a 4·0-kb fragment from a genomic library of Candida albicans which contained two open reading frames (ORFs). One of them is homologous to a prolyl-tRNA synthetase that catalyses the charging of a specific tRNA by proline (CaPRS). A deduced sequence of 575 amino acids representing a polypeptide of 66·2 kDa was determined. A FASTA search indicated that the CaPRSp had an overall similarity of 54·4% with the product of a Saccharomyces cerevisiae ORF (YER087) and 43·8% with the prolyl-tRNA synthetase of Escherichia coli (COLIPRO). Consensus Class II aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase sequences were identified by the PROSITE program. CaPRS was localized to chromosome R of the C. albicans …

Sequencing analysis of a 4·1 kb subtelomeric region from yeast chromosome IV identifiesHXT15, a new member of the hexose transporter family

1996

The DNA sequence of a 4·1 kb region of Saccharomyces cerevisiae chromosome IV was determined. This region contains a single open reading frame which codes for a member of the hexose transporter family. This new gene has been named HXT15 according to yeast gene data bases. The sequence has been entered in the EMBL data library under Accession Number X92891.

The Nucleotide Sequence of a 39 kb Segment of Yeast Chromosome IV: 12 New Open Reading Frames, Nine Known Genes and One Gene for Gly-tRNA

1997

The complete nucleotide sequence of a 39 090 bp segment from the left arm of yeast chromosome IV was determined. Twenty-one open reading frames (ORFs) longer than 100 amino acids and a Gly-tRNA gene were discovered. Nine of the 21 ORFs (D0892, D1022, D1037, D1045, D1057, D1204, D1209, D1214, D1219) correspond to the previously sequenced Saccharomyces cerevisiae genes for the NAD-dependent glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH), the secretory component (SHR3), the GABA transport protein (UGA4), the high mobility group-like protein (NHP2), the hydroxymethylbilane synthase (HEM3), the methylated DNA protein-cysteine S-methyltransferase (MGT1), a putative sugar transport protein, the Shm1 protein (SHM1)…

Google Earth geo-education resources: A transnational approach from Ireland, Iceland, Finland, and Norway

2012

The Northern Environmental Education Development (NEED) project was a transnational geo-education resource development initiative cooperated by four European countries: Ireland, Finland, Norway, and Iceland. NEED supported the development of novel geological information resources, and the establishment of geoeducation networks in the four project regions. An analysis of the national geography and science curriculum in each region was conducted. This analysis identifi ed which geographic learning skills were common to each curriculum. The development of innovative geographic information system (GIS) resources to help support the development of geographic skills was considered a potentially v…

The AsPIRE Project (Aspatial Peripherality, Innovation and the Rural Economy intends to provide a scientifically valid answer to some of the problems arising in…

Study Success and Opportunities for Refugees in Higher Education – an Effectiveness Analysis

2021

Constantly high numbers of refugees, particularly among young individuals, require effective approaches to providing this group with access to higher education. Findings from studies with refugees and comparison groups, such as migrants or international students, indicate that refugees are characterized by specific factors that distinguish them and their educational challenges from other student groups. In the tertiary sector, attempts are being made to support refugees’ access to higher education through online study platforms. However, there are hardly any findings on how effective these platforms are, nor what requirements they have to meet to effectively address the needs of the target …

Non-participation modestly increased with distance to the examination clinic among adults in Finnish health examination surveys

2018

Aims: Health examination surveys (HES) provide important information about population health and health-related factors, but declining participation rates threaten the representativeness of collected data. It is hard to conduct national HESs at examination clinics near to every sampled individual. Thus, it is interesting to look into the possible association between the distance from home to the examination clinic and non-participation, and whether there is a certain distance after which the participation activity decreases considerably. Methods: Data from two national HESs conducted in Finland in 2011 and 2012 were used and a logistic regression model was fitted to investigate how distanc…
