Overcoming acculturation: physical education recruits' experiences of an alternative pedagogical approach to games teaching
2015
Background: Physical education teacher education (PETE) programmes have been identified as a critical platform to encourage the exploration of alternative teaching approaches by pre-service teachers. However, the socio-cultural constraint of acculturation or past physical education and sporting experiences results in the maintenance of the status quo of a teacher-driven, reproductive paradigm. Previous studies have reported successfully overcoming the powerful influence of acculturation, resulting in a change in PETE students' custodial teaching beliefs and receptiveness to alternative teaching approaches. However, to date, limited information has been reported about how PETE students' accu…
Healthcare access of immigrants: An integrated ecological framework
2019
Access to healthcare impacts in health, and for its importance it has been conceptualized by different theoretical models. Theories tackling social barriers have been established too. Nevertheless, a lack of theorization about healthcare access of immigrants exists, and there is no theory able to integrate all the scientific literature on this and its impact on the health of immigrants. In order to study the factors relating to the access of immigrants and to guide the development and evaluation of public health interventions, an integrative approach is needed. In this regard, from an ecological perspective healthcare access of immigrants would be shaped by interrelated factors in different…
Acculturation profiles, psychosocial adaptation and perceived discrimination among Tunisian adolescents
2014
The study refers to data coming from the Italian section of MIRIPS project. It was focused on the analysis of the adaptation of Tunisian adolescents living in Italy and it was guided by the integration hypothesis, stating that migrants feel better if they are engaged in both their own culture and that of the larger society than if they engage in one or the other culture only. Using a person-oriented approach, the study investigated the relationships between acculturation profiles - namely patterns of relations between factors associated to the acculturation process (e.g., acculturation strategies, ethnic and national identities, ethnic and national language use, social contacts with people …

Immigrant and Autochthonous Young Adults in Italy: Intercultural Profiles, Psychosocial Adjustment and Mutual Attitudes
2012
In the last two decades, Italy had to deal with a rapid immigrant population increase. This change in “plural” society is characterized by deep-rooted disagreements that sometimes are even source of conflicts. For these reasons, there is the need to foster the scientific research in the field of intercultural relations in order to overcome conflicts among acculturating groups, especially during a period of economic recession characterized by a renewal in unemployment rates. From this perspective, both psychology of immigration and developmental psychology have begun to contribute to an understanding of those factors underlying the management of intercultural relations during life-course. Sp…

High-skilled immigrants in times of crisis. A cross-European analysis
2014
Abstract In times of economic turmoil, do high-skilled immigrants (HSIMs) tremble, or are they better suited than non-immigrants or low-skill immigrants to cope with such instability? This paper sheds some light on HSIMs’ social integration during crisis by considering their life satisfaction, ability to get paid work, and civic participation. European Social Survey (ESS) data are used in multilevel models aiming to disentangle the effect of recession in the host economy from that of living through times of crisis. The existing literature does not point in a clear direction, but the use of acculturation perspective, along with the self-selection hypothesis, help to derive clearer expectatio…
