Quinone reduction and redox cycling catalysed by purified rat liver dihydrodiol/3 alpha-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase.

1992

A highly active preparation of rat liver dihydrodiol/3 alpha-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase was obtained using a newly developed, rapid purification scheme involving affinity chromatography on Red Sepharose. Depending on the coenzyme present, the purified enzyme was found to catalyse the oxidation of dihydrodiols and steroids or the reduction of substrates with carbonyl or quinone moieties. Using a wide range of synthetic quinones derived from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), we observed a pronounced regioselectivity of the quinone reductase activity. Good substrates were the o-quinones of phenanthrene, benz(a)anthracene, chrysene and benzo(a)pyrene with the quinonoid moiety in the K-…

Glutathione Transferase A1-1 Catalyzed Conjugation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Diol-Epoxides with Glutathione

1996

Abstract The glutathione transferase A1-1 (GSTA1-1) isoenzyme catalyzes the formation of GSH-conjugates of the isomeric bay-region diol-epoxides (DEs) of trans-1,2-dihydroxy-3,4-epoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrochrysene (CDE) and trans-3,4-dihydroxy-1,2-epoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrodibenz[a,h]anthracene (DBADE) as well as the isomeric fjord-region DEs trans-3,4-dihydroxy-1,2-epoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrobenzo[c]phenanthrene (BPhDE) and trans-9,10-dihydroxy-11,12-epoxy-9,10,11,12-tetrahydro-benzo[c]chrysene (BCDE) although with an approx. 20-fold variation in catalytic efficiency. With the anti-diastereomers and the syn-diastereomers of BPhDE and BCDE, GSTA1-1 demonstrated a significant preference for the enan…

Circular dichroism in angular resolved photoemission from pure and Rb-doped C60 and C22H14 layers on platinum and tungsten

1997

Abstract Polycrystalline C60 and Pentacene films grown on W(110) and Pt(111) have been studied in valence band photoemission using circularly polarised synchrotron radiation from BESSY with special emphasis on circular dichroism in photoemission. For thin films of C60, dichroic asymmetries of about 10% occur independent of the temperature and the substrate hinting that the rotation of the topmost layer is hindered even at room temperature. For Pentacene we found asymmetries up to 50% in the region of the σ-electrons. Moreover, we found for this molecule a dichroic asymmetry in normal emission, that is a forbidden geometry. This hints on adsorption with the molecules perpendicularly oriented…

Conformational analysis of methyl-substituted 9,10-dihydroanthracenes

2005

The amount of the ring puckering in methyl-substituted 9,10- dihydroanthracene was theoretically determined through DFT calculations. Theoretical calculations allowed to obtain the geometrical structures and energetic data on the different considered isomers.

Controlling Exciton Propagation in Organic Crystals through Strong Coupling to Plasmonic Nanoparticle Arrays.

2022

Exciton transport in most organic materials is based on an incoherent hopping process between neighboring molecules. This process is very slow, setting a limit to the performance of organic optoelectronic devices. In this Article, we overcome the incoherent exciton transport by strongly coupling localized singlet excitations in a tetracene crystal to confined light modes in an array of plasmonic nanoparticles. We image the transport of the resulting exciton–polaritons in Fourier space at various distances from the excitation to directly probe their propagation length as a function of the exciton to photon fraction. Exciton–polaritons with an exciton fraction of 50% show a propagation length…

Anthrylmethylamine functionalised mesoporous silica-based materials as hybrid fluorescent chemosensors for ATP

2005

A number of functionalised mesoporous solids containing anchored anthrylmethylamine groups have been prepared using different co-hydrolysis or grafting synthetic routes. The solids have been characterised using standard solid-state techniques. Solids with a low loading of the anthrylmethylamine probe show typical well defined and structured emission bands centred at ca. 415 nm. Addition of ATP to suspensions of these solids at pH 2.8 resulted in a quenching of the anthracene emission. These solids showed a cooperative effect that resulted in quite a remarkable improvement in ATP response with respect to the free anthrylmethylamine probe in solution. Certain prepared solids showed a remarkab…

SURFACE EFFECTS ON THE GROWTH OF SOLUTION PROCESSED PENTACENE THIN FILMS

2008

13,6-N-Sulfinylacetamidopentacene (SAP) has been transferred on solid substrates both by water-rich environment and organic solvents without altering his chemical structure. Thermal conversion of SAP to pentacene leads to crystals showing similar features of vacuum-sublimated pentacene both in the bulk and thin-film phases. The thin-film phase is strongly affected by the substrate surface properties. Low energy Si-CH3 rich surfaces allow for the formation of compact micrometric crystals following a Volmer-Weber like growth with orientation suitable for field-effect carrier mobility. Screw dislocations along with straight edges are found on these systems as an indication of a loose interlaye…

The use of anthracene as a model compound in a comparative study of hydrous pyrolysis methods for industrial waste remediation

2011

Author's version of an article published in Chemosphere, 84 (4), 403-408. Also available from the publisher: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.chemosphere.2011.03.061 Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are very stable compounds and tend to bioaccumulate in the environment due to their high degree of conjugation and aromaticity. Hydrous pyrolysis is explored as a technique for the treatment of industrial water containing PAH, using anthracene as a model compound. The reactivity of anthracene under a range of temperatures and durations are studied in this paper. Aliquots of 1.0-10.0mg of anthracene in a range of 1.0-5.0 mL of H(2)O are subjected to hydrous pyrolysis under varied conditions of tempera…
