Photoimaging through in-Situ Photopolymerization of Heterobifunctional Mesogenic Compounds in Liquid Crystalline State

A series of heterobifunctional mesogenic biphenyl esters having two different polymerizable groups, i.e., acryl and diacetylene groups, were synthesized and their thermal behaviors and polymerization investigated. All compounds showed enantiotropic transitions. Under POM, highly birefringent focal-conic fan textures appeared on heating and cooling from the isotropic melt. Compounds 6−8 having a butyl spacer between a biphenyl and a diacetylene group exhibited LC phases even at room temperature. The X-ray diffractograms of compounds 6−8 showed a set of reflections in the small-angle region. Liquid-Crystalline Colloidal Particles

Here we report about the synthesis of colloidal particles of nematic and smectic liquid-crystalline polymers. For this purpose mesogen-containing acrylate monomers were synthesized and polymerized in a special modification of a precipitation polymerization called dispection polymerization. By variation of the polymerization conditions colloidal particles of different size and polydispersity could be obtained including very narrowly distributed samples in optimized batches. Protonation constants of several natural and synthetic humates and fulvates were determined by ISE-H+ potentiometry in different ionic media (alkali metal halides and tetraethylammonium iodide) at different ionic strengths and T ) 298.15 K. Reactive surface coatings based on polysilsesquioxanes: defined adjustment of surface wettability.

We have investigated a generally applicable protocol for a substrate-independent reactive polymer coating that offers interesting possibilities for further molecular tailoring via simple wet chemical derivatization reactions. Poly(methylsilsesquioxane)-poly(pentafluorophenyl acrylate) hybrid polymers have been synthesized by RAFT polymerization, and stable reactive surface coatings have been prepared by spin-coating on the following substrates: Si, glass, gold, PMMA, PDMS, and steel. Solubilization by polysoaps

The aqueous solubilization power of several series of micellar homopolymers and copolymers (''polysoaps'') is investigated. Using five insoluble or poorly water-soluble dyes, comparisons of the capacities are made with respect to the influence of structural variables such as the polymer backbone, the polymer geometry, the comonomer content, and the charge of the hydrophilic group. Some guidelines for polysoap structures suited for efficient solubilization are established. Noteworthy is that the solubilization capacities of the polysoaps are neither linked to the ability to reduce the surface tension of water, nor to the polarity of the solubilization sites deduced from spectroscopic probes.

Polymerizable and polymeric zwitterionic surfactants: 1. Synthesis and bulk properties

Abstract The synthesis of a series of permanently zwitterionic surfactant monomers based on sulphobetaines and the preparation of their polymers is described. Solubilities, thermal properties and bulk structures of the zwitterionic polymers are studied with respect to their molecular architecture, and compared with cationic analogues. The various solubilities of the polymers can be correlated with their molecular geometry, enabling differentiation into distinct classes. The molecular packing and spatial correlations of polymers [CH 2 CR(COOR')] n (R= H, Me; R'= (CH 2 ) 11 + NMe 2 (CH 2 ) 3 SO 3 - ; (CH 2 ) 2 + N(Me)[(CH 2 ) 3 SO 3 - ][C 10 H 21 ]) are studied by means of X-ray analysis and conformational calculations. The analysis of the correlation functions and density distribution profiles suggest a double-layered molecular packing which is discussed for the three polymers investigated, with respect to their different chemical structures. Whereas the zwitterionic polymethacrylates studied exhibit liquid-like short-range order, the polyacrylate analog exhibits an ordered double-layered superstructure

The interaction of Cu2+ and Cd2+ ions with polyacrylates (PAA, 2 kDa and 100 kDa), polymetacrylate(PMA, 5.4 kDa), and alginate (AA, 70 kDa to 100 kDa) was studied by potentiometry, using ISE-Cu2+, ISE-Cd2+, and ISE-H+ electrodes. The investigations were performed in NaNO3 aqueous solutions, in the ionic strength range 0.10 e I (mol ·L-1) e 0.75, at T ) 298.15 K. The “diprotic-like model” was used to explain the acid-base behavior of the polycarboxylates under investigation (for this model, the monomeric unit of the polyelectrolyte is considered as a dicarboxylate).
