Study on a photocatalytic membrane reactor for water purification

Abstract Some results obtained in a photocatalytic membrane reactor, to be used for degradation of toxic organic species dissolved in water, are reported. The catalyst, TiO 2 P25 Degussa, was immobilised by means of a flat sheet polymeric membrane and 4-Nitrophenol (4-NP) was used as a model molecule to evaluate the reactor performance. A preliminary investigation of the stability, under UV irradiation, of some eligible polymeric membranes was carried out by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy (OM), determinations of water permeation flux (WPF) and total organic carbon (TOC). Microemulsion encapsulated into halloysite nanotubes and their applications for cleaning of a marble surface

Halloysite nanotubes were used to incorporate anionic surfactant micelles and an organic solvent to generate a cleaning system to be applied in Cultural Heritage restoration. The targeted adsorption is driven by electrostatic interactions based on the nanotubes peculiar charge separation. Namely anionic species are driven to the positively charged inner surface while being prevented from interacting with the halloysite outer surface that possesses a positive charge density. Addition of Secondary Amines to α,β-Unsaturated Carbonyl Compounds and Nitriles by Using Microstructured Reactors

Several additions of amines to a,ß-unsaturated carbonyl compounds (Michael additions) were performed in a continuous-flow microstructured reactor rig and compared to the respective batch reaction. Dimethylamine/diethylamine/piperidine and acrylic acid ethyl ester/acrylonitrile were employed as two sets of reactants, giving six reactions. Some of these reactions are highly exothermal. Using the traditional batch procedure the olefin must be added quite slowly to the diluted amine to ensure temperature control and safe operation; especially this is necessary for the addition of dimethylamine (40 mass % aqueous solution) to acrylonitrile. We have investigated several 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions of a chiral nitrone prepared from L-erythrulose. While cycloadditions to carbon-carbon multiple bonds of dipolarophiles such as ethyl acrylate, ethyl propiolate, or dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate were poorly stereoselective, reaction with acrylonitrile provided predominantly one diastereomeric adduct. Furthermore, the regioselectivity exhibited by the two structurally similar dipolarophiles ethyl acrylate and ethyl propiolate was found to be opposite. Abstract The mechanisms of the domino reaction between dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate, 1 , and 2-( N , N -dimethylamino)acrylonitrile, 2 , and these in presence of acrylonitrile have been theoretically studied using ab initio methods. These domino reactions comprise several pericyclic-type reactions. The geometrical and electronic analysis of the HF/6-31G ∗ transition structures and intermediates allows characterizing the processes that take place along these domino reactions. B3LYP/6-31G ∗ energetic results are in agreement with the experimental outcomes.

Abstract Reaction of 3-nitroisoxazoline-2-oxide with monosubstituted ethenes, first time documented fifty years ago, have been reviewed. Structures of phenyl and cyano derivatives of 1-aza-2,8-dioxabicyclo[3.3.0]octane produced in [3 + 2] cycloaddition (32CA) between styrene and acrylonitrile with 3-nitroisoxazoline-2-oxide were determined through single crystal XRD analysis. The molecular mechanism of the title 32CA has been also analyzed within the Molecular Electron Density Theory (MEDT) based on the M06-2X(PCM)/6-311 + G(d,p) calculations.

1. [2,3-14C]Acrylonitrile was incubated with rat-liver microsomes, NADPH and either DNA, RNA or bovine serum albumin. Irreversible binding occurred to the macromolecular targets. 1. After i.p. injection of [2,3-14C]acrylonitrile to rats, a significant portion of radioactivity becomes irreversibly attached to proteins of liver, lung, spleen and other tissues. 2. When rat liver microsomes were incubated with [2,3-14C]acrylonitrile, a time-dependent irreversible binding of radioactivity occurred to microsomal proteins. This binding was not dependent on NADPH. A high extent of binding to heat-inactivated microsomes indicated that no enzymic metabolic step was involved. 3. A high molecular weight acrylonitrile/butadiene/methacrylic acid (Nipol 1472) rubber is chosen to control processability and mechanical properties of a TGDDM (tetra glycidyl diphenyl methane) based epoxy resin formulation for aerospace composite applications. The physical blend of rubber and epoxy resin, achieved by dissolution of all the components in a common solvent, forms a heterogeneous system after solvent removal and presents coarse phase separation during cure that impairs any practical relevance of this material.
