Fructose 2,6-bisphosphate and glycolytic flux in skeletal muscle of swimming frog

AbstractGlycolytic flux in skeletal muscle is controlled by 6-phosphofructokinase but how this is achieved is controversial. Brief exercise (swimming) in frogs caused a dramatic increase in the phosphofructokinase activator, fructose 2,6-bisphosphate, in working muscle. The kinetics of phosphofructokinase suggest that in resting muscle, the enzyme is inhibited by ATP plus citrate and that the increase in fructose 2,6-bisphosphate is part of the mechanism to activate phosphofructokinase when exercise begins. Experiences of a poison center with metformin-associated lactic acidosis.

Metformin is widely used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, though it is recognized to be associated with the risk of lactic acidosis. A case of pronounced lactic acidosis with cardiac arrest (pH 6.60, lactate 17.5 mmol/l, base excess - 30, standard bicarbonate 2.5 mmol/l, core body temperature 27.8 degrees C) is presented in a 61-year-old woman under metformin therapy. The key laboratory abnormalities observed during the intensive care treatment including repeated hemodialysis are described. Medicated hydrogels of hyaluronic acid derivatives for use in orthopedic field.

Physical hydrogels have been obtained from hyaluronic acid derivatized with polylactic acid in the presence or in the absence of polyethylene glycol chains. Predicting stiffness and strength of birch pulp:Polylactic acid composites

This paper studies failure of birch pulp–polylactic acid composites. Stiffness and strength are calculated using the theory of short fibre composites and the results are compared to experimental data. The results differed from the experimental values by 0–6%. With less aligned fibres the short fibre theory is not feasible. The performance of the 40 wt% birch pulp – polylactic acid composite is predicted with X-ray microtomography based finite element modelling, and the results are compared with experiments. Development of an ad hoc natural whey starter culture for the production of Vastedda della valle del Belìce cheese

This work was aimed to characterize the autochthonous lactic acid bacteria (LAB) of PDO Vastedda della valle del Belìce cheeses, produced in several dairy factories, for the development of an ad hoc starter culture preparation for the production of this cheese. To this purpose, winter and spring productions were analysed, in order to isolate LAB adapted to perform the fermentation at low temperatures. Plate counts showed the total microbial counts (TMC) till levels of 9 -1almost 10 CFU g and all cheese samples were dominated by coccus LAB. Red grape Nero d’Avola cultivar grape pomace powder (GPP) was applied during fresh ovine cheese production in order to increase polyphenol content. Before cheeses were produced, the bacteria of a freeze-dried commercial starter culture were isolated and tested in vitro against GPP. Two dominant strains, both resistant to GPP, were identified.
