Preparation of targets by electrodeposition for heavy element studies

Abstract For heavy element studies at GSI, lanthanide and actinide targets have been prepared by molecular plating. The deposition occurs from an isopropanolic solution at 1000–1200 V with current densities of a few mA/cm 2 . Several lanthanide targets have been prepared for test experiments. With nat Gd deposited on a 10 μm thick Be backing foil a target density of 1100 μg/cm 2 could be achieved. Gd-targets were used for the production of α-emitting isotopes of Os, the homologue of hassium (Hs; Z =108), in order to develop a chemical separation procedure for Hs. 248 Cm targets with densities up to 730 μg/cm 2 have been produced for recent experiments to investigate the chemical behaviour o…

Abstract The Transactinide Separator and Chemistry Apparatus (TASCA) is a recoil separator with maximized transmission designed for performing advanced chemical studies as well as nuclear reaction and structure investigations of the transactinide elements ( Z >103) on a one-atom-at-a-time basis. TASCA will provide a very clean transactinide fraction with negligible contamination of lighter elements from nuclear side reactions in the target. Lanthanide and actinide targets are prepared at the University of Mainz by molecular plating, an electrochemical deposition from an organic solvent, for heavy-ion reaction studies at GSI. To acquire information about deposition yield, target thickness, and target homogeneity, the following analysis methods are applied. With neutron activation analysis (NAA) the deposition yield and the average thickness of the deposited material is determined. Adamantylcalixarenes with CMPO groups at the wide rim: synthesis and extraction of lanthanides and actinides

Abstract Starting from p -adamantylcalix[4]- and [6]arenes functionalized with carboxylic acid or ester groups at the adamantane nuclei, carbamoylmethylphosphine oxide (CMPO)-containing ligands of a novel type were synthesized. They were studied as extractants for a series of f-block elements including radioactive 152 Eu(III), 241 Am(III), 233 U(VI), and 239 Pu(IV). Tetrameric ligand 4b in which CMPO residues are connected to adamantane nuclei through methylene groups gave the best extraction results for lanthanides and actinides. Mechanism of Heavy Element Retention in Hydrated Layers Formed on Leached Silicate Glasses

ABSTRACTWe have investigated the relationship between hydrated layer formation during aqueous corrosion of silicates and retention of heavy elements (Fe, REE, actinides). Our approach is based on the comparison of the dissolution behaviour of silicate glasses, silicate minerals implanted with increasing doses of lead ions (1×E+12 to 1×E+15 ions/cm2), sorption experiments on silica surfaces and direct precipitation of hydrosilicates. First successful ionization of Lr (Z = 103) by a surface-ionization technique.

We have developed a surface ionization ion-source as part of the JAEA-ISOL (Isotope Separator On-Line) setup, which is coupled to a He/CdI2 gas-jet transport system to determine the first ionization potential of the heaviest actinide lawrencium (Lr, Z = 103). The new ion-source is an improved version of the previous source that provided good ionization efficiencies for lanthanides. An additional filament was newly installed to give better control over its operation. We report, here, on the development of the new gas-jet coupled surface ion-source and on the first successful ionization and mass separation of 27-s (256)Lr produced in the (249)Cf + (11)B reaction.

Negative Ce anomalies in Mn oxides: The role of Ce4+ mobility during water–mineral interaction

We present one of the very rare natural examples of extremely negative Ce anomalies (up to 4 orders of magnitude) in manganese oxides, caused by higher mobility of Ce4+ compared to REE3+ in an aquatic environment. The young secondary Mn oxides formed together with fluorites and goethites during water–mineral interaction in a hydrothermal fluorite vein. Our findings are in contrast to the oxidative scavenging of Ce, which is commonly observed in Mn oxides. Comparison of REE patterns from modern mine waters with primary and secondary minerals demonstrates that this cannot be solely explained as a source-related feature or by immobilization of Ce, but must at least partially be the result of p…

Abstract A detailed reevaluation of the complexation equilibria of plutonium(IV) with the polyaminocarboxylic sequestering agent EDTA4− has been performed in 1 M (H,K)NO3 media at 298 K by means of visible absorption spectrophotometry and glass-electrode potentiometry at millimolar concentration levels. The high binding affinity even under strongly acidic conditions supports the exclusive formation of the neutral Pu(EDTA) complex over the range 0.01 ≤ [H+] ≤ 0.9 M with an apparent formation constant of log β110 = 25.8(1) at 0.9 M HNO3.
