They are now facing an evolution aiming at responding to quality, safety and mass production issues. Parasite-induced change in host behaviour and susceptibility to predation in an eye fluke–fish interaction

Abstract Trophically transmitted parasites may increase their transmission efficiency by altering the behaviour of infected hosts to increase their susceptibility to predation by target hosts (the next host in the life cycle). The parasite Diplostomum spathaceum (Trematoda) reduces the vision of its fish intermediate hosts: its metacercariae lodge themselves in the eyes of fish and induce cataract formation, which gives them the opportunity to affect fish behaviour. We report a complete genome sequence of a Finnish isolate of the fish pathogen Flavobacterium columnare . Using PacBio RS II sequencing technology, the complete circular genome of F. columnare strain B185 with 3,261,404 bp was obtained.

Parasite resistance and avoidance behaviour in preventing eye fluke infections in fish.

This paper examines the efficiency of acquired resistance in protecting the fish host, rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), against the trematode parasite Diplostomum spathaceum, and the hypothesis that fish recognize areas where infective stages are aggregated and show avoidance behaviour. We found that when fish with a low level of infection were held in restricted cages in natural conditions they became infected and developed cataracts as a result of this infection. This suggests that acquired resistance is insufficient in protecting fish against the parasite or the deleterious effects of infection in conditions where fish could not avoid the parasite. Acute toxicity testing in fish is a standard method used in estimating the influences of chemicals on aquatic vertebrates. The ecotoxicological data obtained from acute toxicity tests in fish are, however, not sufficiently reliable to justify the continued use of this test. Fertilised eggs of zebrafish ( Brachydanio rerio) were used to test the acute toxicity of chemicals. AbstractFish and feed waste provide most of the nutrients required by the plants in aquaponics if the optimum ratio between daily fish feed inputs and the plant growing area is sustained. Thus, the fish feed needs to fulfil both the fish’s and plant’s nutritional requirements in an aquaponic system. A controlled fish waste production strategy where the nitrogen, phosphorus and mineral contents of fish diets are manipulated and used provides a way of influencing the rates of accumulation of nutrients, thereby reducing the need for the additional supplementation of nutrients. The musculature of the electric fish Eigenmannia virescens (South American green knife fish) characterized with cytochrome oxidase staining

Using cytochrome C-oxidase staining, different types of somatic musculature were clearly distinguished in the gymnotoid fish Eigenmannia virescens. Except for a few thin fibres in the region of the horizontal septum, which stained faintly, no others in the trunk muscle stained. Strong staining appeared in the fibres of the anal fin muscles. According to the classification of fish musculature into white, intermediate and red, only the locomotory organ of this fish has red fibres, whereas the trunk muscles are white.
