Abstract l -Carnitine is a vitamin-like nutrient essential for energy production and lipid metabolism in many organs and tissues such as skeletal muscle and heart. Even if l -carnitine can be synthesized, most of the carnitine present in human body is provided by food. Until now, no large study has been conducted where the content in l -carnitine of various foods was analyzed. The objective of this study was to determine the level of free l -carnitine present in food commonly consumed in Western countries. A radioisotopic assay was used to estimate l -carnitine content in raw and processed foods. From this study, it clearly appeared that meat products were the best sources for l -carnitine.…

The values of haematological and selected blood plasma biochemical parameters of juvenile common carp (Cyprinus carpio Linnaeus, 1758) were compared between blood samples taken from caudal vein and heart to evaluate the influence of blood sampling body site on the obtained results in two groups of fish of different blood sampling order: I – first by caudal and then by cardiac puncture, II – first by cardiac and then by caudal puncture. Quality and shelf-life of whole and filleted Coryphaena hippurus, stored with modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) and natural antioxidants from halophytes (HAL), were investigated. Fillets were divided into control, simply sealed in trays; MAP, preserved by modified atmosphere (45% CO2, 50% N-2, 5% O-2); and MAP-HAL, pretreated with antioxidants and preserved by MAP. Whole and filleted fish were stored at -1 +/- 0.5 degrees C for 18days. The quality of the samples was analyzed at the time of packaging and after 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, and 18days. Three bone-bearing horizons, consis ting of seven bone-bearing beds with fi sh and reptile remains, were recently discovered in the Uppermost Röt (Buntsandstein, Lower Tri assic) peritidal and shallow marine carbonates in the vi- cinity of Gogolin (S Poland). The aim of this study is to reco gnize the genesis and deposi tional environments of the bonebeds. Detailed fi eldwork, microfacies analysis, and SEM-EDS anal ysis reveal that the vertebrate remains occur to a great extent alongside evidence for former microbial activity. The reptile remains represent at least Dactylosaurus and Nothosaurus (Sauropterygia) genera, while the fi sh remains belong to the Chondrichthyes and Actinopterygii. …

Importantly, the health effects caused by these two substances can be evaluated in one common end point, intelligence quotient (IQ), providing a more transparent analysis.
