On the design of effective learning materials for supporting self-directed learning of programming

This paper reports on the action research that studies how to implement self-directed learning of programming in the academic context. Based on our findings from the previous steps with this research agenda, we focus on the design of learning materials. That is, we aim to facilitate the students' self-directed learning by developing illustrative and concise materials that the students could use to efficiently develop theoretical understanding of the learning topics. In designing the materials, we will rely on the cognitive load theory as the guiding theoretical framework. The paper demonstrates the planning stage of our second action research cycle.

Designers of interactive learning environments with a focus on word problem solving usually have to compromise between the amount of resolution paths that a user is allowed to follow and the quality of the feedback provided. We have built an intelligent tutoring system (ITS) that is able to both track the user's actions and provide adequate supervision during the resolution. Active Learning of Recursive Functions by Ultrametric Algorithms

We study active learning of classes of recursive functions by asking value queries about the target function f, where f is from the target class. That is, the query is a natural number x, and the answer to the query is f(x). The complexity measure in this paper is the worst-case number of queries asked. We prove that for some classes of recursive functions ultrametric active learning algorithms can achieve the learning goal by asking significantly fewer queries than deterministic, probabilistic, and even nondeterministic active learning algorithms. This is the first ever example of a problem where ultrametric algorithms have advantages over nondeterministic algorithms.

This paper continues the discussion about student-driven, interactive learning activities in higher education. Using object-oriented activity theory, the article explores the relational aspects of reflexive practice as demonstrated in five online discussions groups to develop students’ conceptual understanding. Retrieving Quantum Information with Active Learning

Active learning is a machine learning method aiming at optimal design for model training. At variance with supervised learning, which labels all samples, active learning provides an improved model by labeling samples with maximal uncertainty according to the estimation model. Here, we propose the use of active learning for efficient quantum information retrieval, which is a crucial task in the design of quantum experiments. Meanwhile, when dealing with large data output, we employ active learning for the sake of classification with minimal cost in fidelity loss.
