Attività di orientamento all’Università: l’impatto delle buone pratiche
2023
The research was carried out as part of a vast project to combat failure in university studies, the provision of guidance and mentoring for students entering the university for the first time, with a view to improving the services offered. First, it was meant to verify the content validity of a self-assessment questionnaire of one's own study habits (ASU 2021) built and validated more than twenty years ago. The questionnaire invites the student to answer not about what he feels he should do, but about what he actually does. Depending on the study difficulties highlighted by the test, laboratory meetings were arranged to plan orientation activities for students of the last two years of secon…
STUDENTS’ PERSPECTIVES ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF MUSICAL ACTIVITIES IN PRESCHOOL EDUCATION
2018
Aim. The aim of the study is to find out students’ perspectives on the necessity, readiness and disturbing factors of implementing musical activities in preschool. The theoretical part of the paper describes the particularity of preschool teachers’ work, the children’s interest in musical activities, and the benefits of implementing musical activities in preschool.
Method. The empirical study involved 168 students (N=168), of which 132 students (N=132) are already working as preschool teachers in parallel with their study at the university. The study identified three questions: why do preschool teachers use musical activities? What factors prevent a preschool teacher from using music…
A Polygenic Risk Score for Hand Grip Strength Predicts Muscle Strength and Proximal and Distal Functional Outcomes among Older Women
2022
Purpose Hand grip strength (HGS) is a widely used indicator of overall muscle strength and general health. We computed a polygenic risk score (PRS) for HGS, and examined, whether it predicted muscle strength, functional capacity and disability outcomes. Methods Genome-wide association study summary statistics for HGS from the Pan-UK Biobank was utilized. PRSs were calculated in the Finnish Twin Study on Aging (N = 429 women, 63–76 years). Strength tests included HGS, isometric knee extension, and ankle plantar flexion strength. Functional capacity was examined with the Timed Up and Go, six-minute and 10-meter walk tests, and dual-task tests. Disabilities in the basic (ADL) and instrumental …
Associations of physical activity in detailed intensity ranges with body composition and physical function : a cross-sectional study among sedentary …
2020
Background Physical activity is crucial to maintain older adults’ health and functioning, but the health benefits of particular activity intensities remain unclear. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to peruse the distribution of physical activity, and to investigate the associations of particular physical activity intensities with body composition and physical function among older adults. Methods The sample comprised of 293 community-dwelling sedentary or at most moderately active older adults (42% men, mean age 74 ± 4 years). Physical activity was measured with a hip-worn tri-axial accelerometer over seven consecutive days, and investigated in detailed intensity range and in catego…
Reliability, validity and performance determinants of the military simulation test for the assessment of anaerobic performance in soldiers
2020
Introduction: Measurements of physical fitness have been identified as one of the most important research priorities in the military. Currently, the physical fitness tests of The Finnish Defence Forces (FDF) do not include a valid and reliable anaerobic test. In order to develop job-related task simulation tests, the purpose of the study was to determine the reliability and validity of a high-intensity military simulation test (MST), which is designed to assess the task-specific anaerobic performance of soldiers. The MST includes typical combat-related maneuvers while wearing a 20 kg combat load. Methods: 22 male cadets (22.5 ± 0.8 years) volunteered to participate. The MST was performed th…
Effect of 12-month supervised, home-based physical exercise on functioning among persons with signs of frailty : Randomized Controlled Trial
2021
Objectives To investigate the effects of a 12-month home-based exercise program on functioning and falls among persons with signs of frailty. Design A randomized controlled trial with a 1:1 allocation Setting Home-based Participants Home-dwelling persons aged ≥65 years meeting at least one frailty phenotype criteria (n=300). Intervention 12-month, individually tailored, progressive and physiotherapist-supervised, physical exercise twice a week (n=150) vs. usual care (n=149). Main outcome Measures Functional Independence Measure (FIM), Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), handgrip strength, instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), and self-reported falls and physical activity (o…
Outdoor Mobility and Use of Adaptive or Maladaptive Walking Modifications among Older People
2020
Background. In old age, decline in functioning may cause changes in walking ability. Our aim was to study whether older people who report adaptive, maladaptive or no walking modifications differ in outdoor mobility. Methods. Community-dwelling people aged 75–90 years (N=848) were interviewed at baseline, of whom 761 participated in the 2-year follow-up. Walking modifications were assessed by asking the participants whether they had modified their way of walking 2 kilometers due to their health. Based on the responses, three categories were formed: no walking modifications (reference), adaptive (e.g., walking more slowly, using an aid) and maladaptive walking modifications (reduced frequency…
Mental Skills of an Athlete as a Resource of Professional Longevity in Sport
2021
The aim of the study was to assess associations between dimensions of mental skills, psychological readiness and predictors of career longevity among current athletes. Mental skills dimensions were measured with the Ottawa Mental Skills Assessment Tool (OMSAT). The psychological predictors of athletic career longevity were measured with the Athletic Coping Skills Scale-28 (the ACSI-28) producing scores for seven coping skills and with the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (CSAI-2) which produced scores for confidence in competition. Overall, 253 current athletes (average age 22 years) of various competitive levels (classified to 5 groups according to the national sport classification sy…
Resonancia nuclear magnética en roturas del ligamento cruzado anterior : sensibilidad y concordancia con hallazgos artroscópicos
2018
To estimate the sensitivity of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as a diagnostic test in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, as well as its correlation with arthroscopic findings. Methods. Retrospective analysis of 270 patients who underwent ACL reconstruction surgery in our health department between 2007 and 2017. ACL injuries were diagnosed by radiologists specialized in musculoskeletal pathology, while the correlation between radiological and arthroscopic findings was determined through statistical analysis. Results. The sensitivity of the MRI regarding diagnosis of ACL injuries was 88.5%. In addition, the correlation between radiologic and arthroscopic findings was 73.3%. In 71% o…
