Flavonols and flavan-3-ols as modulators of xanthine oxidase and manganese superoxide dismutase activity.

Experiments were performed to assess the dose-dependent effects of quercetin, kaempferol, (+) catechin, and (-) epicatechin on superoxide radical production through the modulation of manganese superoxide dismutase and xanthine oxidase activities. The experiments were carried out at flavanoid concentrations ranging from 1 µM to 100 µM. This investigation highlighted that flavonols induced opposite effects on superoxide radical production at different doses, i.e. pro-oxidant at the highest concentration (100 µM) and anti-oxidant at the lowest concentration (1 µM). Recent reports suggest that xanthine oxidase (XO), a modified form of the native xanthine dehydrogenase enzyme, plays an important role in various forms of ischemic and vascular injuries, inflammatory diseases, and chronic heart failure. Phosphine ligands have been demonstrated to have an effect on reactivity and selectivity in the competitive intramolecular palladium-catalysed Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of dibromo sulfoxide 1a possessing two different hybridised electrophilic carbons. It was found that the bromine bond to the sp(3)-hybridised carbon is selectively replaced in the presence of unhindered phosphines such as PPh(3) or xantphos. The use of hindered phosphine ligands such as P(o-tol)(3) and P(1-naphthyl)(3) reversed the selectivity, conducting the cross-coupling at the Csp(2)-Br. Transmembrane anion transporters (anionophores) have potential for new modes of biological activity, including therapeutic applications. In particular they might replace the activity of defective anion channels in conditions such as cystic fibrosis. However, data on the biological effects of anionophores are scarce, and it remains uncertain whether such molecules are fundamentally toxic. A detailed study of the rise phase of a long duration X-ray flare in the young star TWA 11B

We analyzed a long duration flare observed in a serendipitous XMM-Newton detection of the M star CD-39 7717B (TWA 11B), member of the young stellar association TW Hya (~ 8 Myr). Only the rise phase (with a duration of ~ 35 ks) and possibly the flare peak were observed. We took advantage of the high count-rate of the X-ray source to carry out a detailed analysis of its spectrum during the whole exposure. After a careful analysis, we interpreted the rise phase as resulting from the ignition of a first group of loops (event A) which triggered a subsequent two-ribbon flare (event B). Durability and integrity of materials used in nuclear power plants is a continuous concern of the nuclear power plant owners and developers. During the fuel irradiation in pressurised water reactors (PWR), the whole fuel-clad assembly is subjected to several irradiation-induced modifications. In particular, the fuel element expansion concomitant to the cladding creeping, leads to the contacting of both materials, allowing the oxidation of the inner side of the clad, locally at first, then tending to affect the overall cladding inner surface. Abstract An easy and inexpensive three-step synthesis of new 2,3-dimethyl-1,4-diphenylcyclopentadiene (3) ligand and the titanium and zirconium homometallocene dichlorides [TiCl2(η5-C5H-2,3-Me2-1,4-Ph2)2] (4), [ZrCl2(η5-C5H-2,3-Me2-1,4-Ph2)2] (5), and the mixed ligand zirconium complex [ZrCl2(η5-C5H-2,3-Me2-1,4-Ph2)(η5-C5H5)] (6) prepared thereof are described. The polymerization of ethene using 4–6/MAO catalysts revealed that zirconocene complexes 5 and 6 displayed moderate and high activity, respectively, whereas the titanium catalyst 4/MAO was inactive. The crystal structures of 4 and 5 were determined by X-ray crystallography.

Abstract Zirconium and hafnium complexes M(η5: η1−C5Me4SiMe2NR′)xCl(4−2x) (M = Zr, Hf; x = 1, 2; R′ = iPr, tBu) containing one or two linked amido-tetramethylcyclopentadienyl ligands C5Me4SiMe2NR′ have been synthesized by the reaction of the dilithium derivative Li2(C5Me4SiMe2NR′) with MCl4(THF)2. The crystal structure of the hafnium complex Hf(η5: η1−C5Me4SiMe2NiPr)2 has been determined by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study and shows a C2-symmetric helical metallocene, in which the amido ligands are bonded as π-donor ligands with Hf—N bond lengths of 2.115(2) A.
