The plasticity of breeding system in arid-adapted Zygophylloideae

Abstract The assurance of reproductive success is an important challenge for arid-adapted plants. Self-compatibility is suggested as a mechanism to compensate for the inadequate breeding opportunities in extreme environments. Zygophylloideae is an arid-adapted subfamily which has successfully radiated in different ranges of arid habitats. In order to study the significance of selfing for the reproductive success of the Zygophylloideae, we calculated pollen ovule ratios (P/O) and conducted bagging experiments for autogamy and xenogamy in eleven representative members of Zygophylloideae and three species of the sister subfamilies Tribuloideae and Larreoideae. A range of different protocols and indices have been developed in recent years for the definition of Environmental Quality Standards in aquaculture. An optimised multi-host trematode life cycle: fishery discards enhance trophic parasite transmission to scavenging birds

Overlapping distributions of hosts and parasites are critical for successful completion of multi-host parasite life cycles and even small environmental changes can impact on the parasite's presence in a host or habitat. The generalist Cardiocephaloides longicollis was used as a model for multi-host trematode life cycles in marine habitats. This parasite was studied to quantify parasite dispersion and transmission dynamics, effects of biological changes and anthropogenic impacts on life cycle completion. Changes in lipid composition in tobacco cells treated with cryptogein , an elicitor from Phytophthora cryptogea

Abstract Changes in lipid composition occurred when tobacco cells (Nicotiana tabacum var. Xanthi) were treated with cryptogein, a proteinaceous elicitor from Phytophthora cryptogea. The most striking change was an increase in acylated steryl glycosides and steryl esters levels, certainly resulting from the glycosylation and/or esterification of free sterols. Moreover, in vivo pulse-labelling experiments with [14C]acetate also showed that a progressive decline in the incorporation rate of [14C]acetate into free sterols started with the induction of sesquiterpenoid synthesis and lasted when sesquiterpenoid synthesis stops. A morphological and mitochondrial assessment of Apis mellifera from Palermo, Italy

A characterization of the honey bees from western Sicily (Palermo, Italy) is presented. Mor- phological comparisons to A. m. ligustica were made using data taken from honey bee populations from southeastern (Bari) and central (Emilia Romagna) Italy. The honey bees of the Palermo area have distinct morphological differences compared to the mainland honey bees. The mtDNA haplotype common in subspecies within the African lineage of A. mellifera predominated in the Sicilian honey bee samples (13 out of 16).
