Endothelin-1 and endothelin receptor status in kidney transplants undergoing acute rejection.

Abstract Endothelin-1 (ET-1) is a potent vasoconstrictor with vasopressor and mitogenic effects. Blood samples were collected from 21 renal transplant patients undergoing acute rejection at the time of diagnostic kidney biopsy: there were 20 men and one woman, mean age 35.6 years. All patients were on triple immunosuppressive therapy with cyclosporine A, azathioprine and methylprednisolone. Twenty living kidney donors pre-uninephrectomy (11 men and nine women, mean age 34 years) served as controls. Cortisol levels and seizures in adults with epilepsy: A systematic review

Stress has been suggested as a trigger factor for seizures in epilepsy patients, but little is known about cortisol levels, as indicators of stress, in adults with epilepsy. This systematic review summarizes the evidence on this topic. Following PRISMA guidelines, 38 articles were selected: 14 analyzing basal cortisol levels, eight examining antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) effects, 13 focused on seizure effects, and three examining stress. Higher basal cortisol levels were found in patients than in healthy people in studies with the most homogeneous samples (45% of 38 total studies). Abstract Sixty-nine blood or bone marrow samples from both children and adults with acute myeloblastic leukemia (AML) were investigated to elucidate the frequency of immunoglobulin (IG) and T-cell receptor (TCR)-gene rearrangements. Non-germline configuration for the IG heavy chain (h) gene was detected in the specimens of nine patients of various subtypes according to the French-American-British classification (FAB), including FAB M1, M2, M4 and M5. Variants of the mannose-binding lectin (MBL) have been shown to be associated with low serum concentrations of the protein and to predispose to bacterial, fungal and viral infections. A recent small study on 33 Caucasian patients had suggested that a mutation at codon 52 of the MBL gene is associated with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Exon 1 of the MBL gene was amplified by PCR in 61 patients with chronic HBV infection, 28 patients with acute infection and in 60 controls.
