Clinical staging and serum cytokines in bipolar patients during euthymia

Aims: Changes in serum cytokines and altered neutrophin concentration have been associated with bipolar disorder (BD). Our aim here was to analyze peripheral blood biomarkers according to the clinical stages of BD. Method: Euthymic BD-I patients were grouped according to their level of functioning in early-stage (n = 25) and late-stage (n = 23), and compared to healthy siblings (n = 23) and genetically unrelated healthy controls (n = 21). TNF-α in CRPS and 'normal' trauma--significant differences between tissue and serum.

Posttraumatic TNF-alpha signaling may be one of the factors responsible for pain and hyperalgesia in complex regional pain syndromes (CRPS). In order to further specify the role of TNF-alpha we investigated tissue (skin) and serum concentrations in three different patient groups: patients with osteoarthritis and planned surgery, with acute traumatic upper limb bone fracture waiting for surgery, and with CRPS I. Thirty patients (10 in each group) were recruited. Mean CRPS duration was 36.1 ± 8.1 weeks (range 8- 90 weeks). Functional anatomy of motor recovery after early brain damage

Functional magnetic resonance imaging and transcranial magnetic stimulation were used to examine a 34 year-old right-handed patient, who, at the age of 6 years, had experienced sudden right hemiplegia, seizures, and stupor during a bout of measles encephalitis, followed by incomplete distal right motor recovery. Morphological MRI showed massive unilateral enlargement of the left ventricle, associated with extreme thinning of the white and gray matter, with partial preservation of the pyramidal tract. Immunosenescence may impact the functionality and breadth of vaccine-elicited humoral immune responses. Is the risk of childhood leukaemia associated with socioeconomic measures in Denmark? A nationwide register‐based case‐control study

The aetiology of childhood leukaemia is poorly understood. Knowledge about differences in risk by socioeconomic status (SES) may enhance etiologic insights. We conducted a nationwide register-based case-control study to evaluate socioeconomic differences in the risk of childhood leukaemia in Denmark and to access whether associations varied by different measures of SES, time point of assessment, leukaemia type and age at diagnosis. Unlike cytarabine, cellular entry of Elacytarabine, the elaidic acid ester derivative of cytarabine, is independent of the human equilibrative nucleoside transporter 1 (hENT1). This phase II study tested whether the hENT1 blast expression level can be used as a predictive marker for cytarabine response and if the efficacy of elacytarabine is independent of hENT1 expression. A total of 51 patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) induction failure were given elacytarabine-idarubicin as a second induction course. The inv(16) and t(16;16) characterize a subgroup of acute myelomonocytic leukemia (AML) with distinct morphological features and a favorable prognosis. Activating mutations of FLT3 are found in approximately one-third of acute myeloid leukemia (AML)-cases and are considered to represent an attractive therapeutic target. In this study, we report that the hydroxystyryl-acrylonitrile compound LS104 inhibits proliferation and induces potent cytotoxic effects in FLT3 expressing leukemic cells in vitro. Immunoblot and phosphoprotein-FACS analysis demonstrated inhibiton of phosphorylation of FLT3-ITD and of its downstream targets. In pharmacokinetic studies, a rapid and dose dependent cellular uptake of LS104 lasting up to 11h could be demonstrated. PURPOSE: To obtain statistical data on the use of high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) for early detection of pneumonia in febrile neutropenic patients with unknown focus of infection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred eighty-eight HRCT studies were performed prospectively in 112 neutropenic patients with fever of unknown origin persisting for more than 48 hours despite empiric antibiotic treatment.
