Effect of priming ith granulocyte-colony-stimulating factor on the outcome of chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukemia

BACKGROUND: Sensitization of leukemic cells with hematopoietic growth factors may enhance the cytotoxicity of chemotherapy in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). METHODS: In a multicenter randomized trial, we assigned patients (age range, 18 to 60 years) with newly diagnosed AML to receive cytarabine plus idarubicin (cycle 1) and cytarabine plus amsacrin (cycle 2) with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) (321 patients) or without G-CSF (319). G-CSF was given concurrently with chemotherapy only. Efficacy and safety of imatinib in adult patients with c-kit–positive acute myeloid leukemia

Abstract This phase 2 pilot study was conducted to determine the efficacy and safety of imatinib mesylate in patients with c-kit–positive acute myeloid leukemia (AML) refractory to or not eligible for chemotherapy. Twenty-one patients were enrolled and received imatinib 600 mg orally once daily. Five responses were seen primarily in patients, starting with relatively low blast counts in bone marrow (BM) and peripheral blood (PB): 2 patients who were considered refractory on chemotherapy on the basis of persistence of blasts in PB and BM met the criteria for complete hematologic remission, 1 patient had no evidence of leukemia, and 2 patients achieved a minor response. Abstract Monitoring of minimal residual disease (MRD) or chimerism may help guide pre-emptive immunotherapy (IT) with a view to preventing relapse in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) after transplantation. Patients with ALL who consecutively underwent transplantation in Frankfurt/Main, Germany between January 1, 2005 and July 1, 2014 were included in this retrospective study. Chimerism monitoring was performed in all, and MRD assessment was performed in 58 of 89 patients. Increasing donor-recipient HLA disparity is associated with negative outcomes of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), but its comparative relevance amid non-HLA donor characteristics is not well established. We addressed this question in 3215 HSCTs performed between 2005 and 2013 in Germany for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) or myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Donors were HLA-matched related (MRD; n = 872) or unrelated (10/10 MUD, n = 1553) or HLA-mismatched unrelated (10/10 MMUD, n = 790). The aim of this study was to prospectively evaluate the frequency, indications, outcomes, and predictive factors associated with opioid switching, using a protocol that had been clinically applied and viewed as effective for many years. Diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis of reversible ischaemic deficits of the brainstem

Objectives: To evaluate the sensitivity of diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the diagnosis of clinically suspected reversible ischaemic deficits of the brainstem. Methods: A total of 158 consecutive patients presenting with acute signs of brainstem dysfunction were investigated using EPI diffusion weighted MRI within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms.
