Texture analysis in susceptibility-weighted imaging may be useful to differentiate acute from chronic multiple sclerosis lesions.

2020

To evaluate the diagnostic performance of texture analysis (TA) applied on non-contrast-enhanced susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) to differentiate acute (enhancing) from chronic (non-enhancing) multiple sclerosis (MS) lesions. We analyzed 175 lesions from 58 patients with relapsing-remitting MS imaged on a 3.0 T MRI scanner and applied TA on T2-w and SWI images to extract texture features. We evaluated the presence or absence of lesion enhancement on T1-w post-contrast images and performed a computational statistical analysis to assess if there was any significant correlation between the texture features and the presence of lesion activity. ROC curves and leave-one-out cross-validation…

Sex-specific differences in the distal versus proximal presenting location of acute deep vein thrombosis

2018

Abstract Background and aims Women present with pulmonary embolism (PE) more often than men, while the opposite is true for proximal deep vein thrombosis (DVT). We investigated whether sex-specific differences exist in the presenting location of acute symptomatic DVT among patients without concomitant PE. Methods We tested our hypothesis in a meta-analysis of studies selected by systematically reviewing PubMed, Embase, and the grey literature. Thereafter, we analysed data of a single-center cohort including patients with first isolated acute DVT to assess the additional impact of age and provoking risk factors on the presenting location of DVT. Results We identified 7 studies for a total of…

Blood pressure for outcome prediction and risk stratification in acute pulmonary embolism.

2015

Abstract Introduction Risk stratification of patients with acute pulmonary embolism (PE) is crucial in deciding appropriate therapy management. Blood pressure (BP) is rapidly available and a reliable parameter. We aimed to investigate BP for short-term outcome in acute PE. Materials and methods Data of 182 patients with acute PE were analyzed retrospectively. Logistic regression models were calculated to investigate associations between BP and in-hospital-death as well as myocardial necrosis. Moreover, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and cutoff values for systolic and diastolic BPs predicting in-hospital death and myocardial necrosis were computed. Results A total of 182 pati…

Intensive chemotherapy with idarubicin, ara-C, etoposide, and m-AMSA followed by immunotherapy with interleukin-2 for myelodysplastic syndromes and h…

2000

Intensive chemotherapy followed by treatment with interleukin-2 (IL-2) was evaluated in a prospective, randomized, multicenter trial including 18 patients with refractory anemia with excess of blasts in transformation (RAEB-T), 86 patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) evolving from myelodysplastic syndromes, and six patients with secondary AML after previous chemotherapy. Median age was 58 years (range: 18-76 years). Forty-nine patients (45%) achieved a complete remission (CR) after two induction cycles with idarubicin, ara-C, and etoposide, 52% of them aged/=60 years and 35% aged60 years (p=0.06). After two consolidation courses, patients were randomized to four cycles of either high-…

An investigation of the potential association between gastrointestinal viral and bacterial infection and development of intestinal acute graft versus…

2021

It is uncertain whether gastrointestinal (GI) infection caused by viral and bacterial pathogens may predispose to gastrointestinal acute Graft-versus-host disease (aGvHD-GI) in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients (allo-HSCT). We investigated the potential association between detection of enteropathogenic viruses or bacteria in stools and subsequent occurrence of aGvHD-GI in a cohort of 121 allo-HSCT patients. Eighty-six out of 121 patients (71%) had acute diarrhea and underwent screening for primary GI pathogens by molecular diagnostic methods. One or more GI pathogens were detected in 27 out of the 86 patients with diarrhea (31.3%). Specifically, Clostridioides diffici…

Generic vancomycin products: Analysis of serum concentrations in patients with acute myeloid leukemia.

2013

Summary Concerns have recently emerged about the quality of generic vancomycin products. Our aim is to analyze serum vancomycin concentrations measured 48 hours after the start of an empirical treatment regimen in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) who received one of the two generic vancomycin products available in France. Patients and methods Seventy-nine AML patients treated with vancomycin during two study periods were included in the study. Our vancomycin dosing regimen was based on the patients’ total body weight adjusted for renal clearance. Results A total of 93 serum vancomycin concentrations were collected: 31 in period 1 and 62 in period 2. In bivariate analysis, the mean…

Amplification of human β-glucoronidase gene for appraising the accuracy of negative SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR results in upper respiratory tract specimens

2020

Real-time reverse transcription polymerase-chain reaction (RT-PCR) is the mainstay of Covid-19 diagnosis. False-negative RT-PCR results may hamper clinical management of patients and hinder the adoption of epidemiological measures to control the pandemic. The current study was aimed at assessing whether amplification of β-glucoronidase (GUSB) gene would help estimate the accuracy of SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR negative results in upper respiratory tract (URT) specimens. URT specimens that tested negative by SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR displayed higher GUSB RT-PCR cycle thresholds (CT) (P=0.070) than those testing positive (median, 30.7; range, 27.0-40.0, and median 29.7; range 25.5-36.8, respectively), this re…

Changing prevalence, clinical features, and outcome of acute hepatitis in Spain (1982-2003)

2006

Background:  Diagnostic and preventive measures have contributed to a change in the epidemiology of acute hepatitis. The purpose of the present paper was to assess the changing prevalence of acute hepatitis from 1982 to 2003. Methods:  Trends in the epidemiology, clinical findings, and outcome of acute viral hepatitis from 1982 to 2003 were examined. A total of 548 episodes of acute hepatitis diagnosed between 1982 and 2003, the clinical course of which was monitored up to the year 2003, were included. Annual changes as well as for the intervals 1982–1992 and 1993–2003 were compared. Results:  Severe infections occurred in 1.3% of cases, with a mortality of 0.6%, with progression into chron…

Safety and Pharmacokinetics of Isavuconazole as Antifungal Prophylaxis in Acute Myeloid Leukemia Patients with Neutropenia: Results of a Phase 2, Dos…

2015

ABSTRACT Isavuconazole is a novel broad-spectrum triazole antifungal agent. This open-label dose escalation study assessed the safety and pharmacokinetics of intravenous isavuconazole prophylaxis in patients with acute myeloid leukemia who had undergone chemotherapy and had preexisting/expected neutropenia. Twenty-four patients were enrolled, and 20 patients completed the study. The patients in the low-dose cohort ( n = 11) received isavuconazole loading doses on day 1 (400/200/200 mg, 6 h apart) and day 2 (200/200 mg, 12 h apart), followed by once-daily maintenance dosing (200 mg) on days 3 to 28. The loading and maintenance doses were doubled in the high-dose cohort ( n = 12). The mean ± …
