Anti-ossidanti naturali per polimeri biodegradabili
2012
Abdominal wall reconstruction by a regionally distinct biocomposite of extracellular matrix digest and a biodegradable elastomer.
2013
Current extracellular matrix (ECM) derived scaffolds offer promising regenerative responses in many settings, however in some applications there may be a desire for more robust and long lasting mechanical properties. A biohybrid composite material that offers both strength and bioactivity for optimal healing towards native tissue behavior may offer a solution to this problem. A regionally distinct biocomposite scaffold composed of a biodegradable elastomer (poly(ester urethane)urea) and porcine dermal ECM gel was generated to meet this need by a concurrent polymer electrospinning/ECM gel electrospraying technique where the electrosprayed component was varied temporally during the processing…
Durability of Biodegradable Polymer Nanocomposites
2021
Biodegradable polymers (BP) are often regarded as the materials of the future, which address the rising environmental concerns. The advancement of biorefineries and sustainable technologies has yielded various BP with excellent properties comparable to commodity plastics. Water resistance, high dimensional stability, processability and excellent physicochemical properties limit the reviewed materials to biodegradable polyesters and modified compositions of starch and cellulose, both known for their abundance and relatively low price. The addition of different nanofillers and preparation of polymer nanocomposites can effectively improve BP with controlled functional properties and change the…
Development of a Brief Form of the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (B–IRI)
2016
ABSTRACTThe Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) is a standardized self-report measure of disposition to empathic responsiveness for the general adult population (the domain for which it was developed), and for the general adolescent population. The IRI has a number of problems, however, including some uncertainty about its factor structure, low reliabilities, and poor readability of some items for people with limited literacy skills. To address these issues, we constructed an abbreviated form of the index, the Brief IRI (B–IRI). Three studies demonstrated that this 16-item B–IRI has a clear and coherent factor structure, adequate internal consistency, measurement invariance across gender a…
Easy-to-read Texts for Students with Intellectual Disability: Linguistic Factors Affecting Comprehension
2013
Background: The use of ‘easy-to-read’ materials for people with intellectual disabilities has become very widespread but their effectiveness has scarcely been evaluated. In this study, the framework provided by Kintsch's Construction–Integration Model (1988) is used to examine (i) the reading comprehension levels of different passages of the Spanish text that have been designed following easy-to-read guidelines and (ii) the relationships between reading comprehension (literal and inferential) and various linguistic features of these texts. Method: Sixteen students with mild intellectual disability and low levels of reading skills were asked to read easy-to-read texts and then complete a rea…
Biodegradability Prediction of Fragrant Molecules by Molecular Topology
2016
Biodegradability is a key property in the development of safer fragrances. In this work we present a green methodology for its preliminary assessment. The structure of various fragrant molecules is characterized by computing a large set of topological indices. Those relevant to biodegradability are selected by means of a hybrid stepwise selection method to build a linear classifier. This model is compared with a more complex artificial neural network trained with the indices previously found. After validation, the models show promise for time and cost reduction in the development of new, safer fragrances. The methodology presented could easily be adapted to many quasi-big data problems in R…
Integrating genomic binding site predictions using real-valued meta classifiers
2008
Currently the best algorithms for predicting transcription factor binding sites in DNA sequences are severely limited in accuracy. There is good reason to believe that predictions from different classes of algorithms could be used in conjunction to improve the quality of predictions. In this paper, we apply single layer networks, rules sets, support vector machines and the Adaboost algorithm to predictions from 12 key real valued algorithms. Furthermore, we use a ‘window’ of consecutive results as the input vector in order to contextualise the neighbouring results. We improve the classification result with the aid of under- and over-sampling techniques. We find that support vector machines …
Regularized RBF Networks for Hyperspectral Data Classification
2004
In this paper, we analyze several regularized types of Radial Basis Function (RBF) Networks for crop classification using hyperspectral images. We compare the regularized RBF neural network with Support Vector Machines (SVM) using the RBF kernel, and AdaBoost Regularized (ABR) algorithm using RBF bases, in terms of accuracy and robustness. Several scenarios of increasing input space dimensionality are tested for six images containing six crop classes. Also, regularization, sparseness, and knowledge extraction are paid attention.
