1984
Antiviral Agents, XXIV: 4-(2-Adamantyl)thiosemicarbazones Reactions of 4-(2-adamantyl)thiosemicarbazide (1) with the carbonyl compounds 2a-d yield the 4-(2-adamantyl)thiosemicarbazones 3a-d. The starting material 1 is accessible from 2-aminoadamantane (4) via 2-adamantyl isothiocyanate (5). Compound 5 and representatives of t…
Diamondoids: functionalization and subsequent applications of perfectly defined molecular cage hydrocarbons
2014
The term “diamondoid” describes cage hydrocarbon molecules that are superimposable on the diamond lattice. Diamondoids that are formally built by face-fusing of adamantane units, namely diamantane, triamantane, tetramantane, etc., have fascinated chemists since the beginning of the last century. The functionalization of these perfectly defined (C,H)-molecules is described here. Thus, diamondoid halides and diamondoid alcohols are first rank precursors for amino and phosphine-substituted diamondoids that have proved to be highly useful in therapeutic applications and metal catalysis, respectively. The extent of functionalization and polyfunctionalization achieved for adamantane and diamantan…
Synthesis of Precision Poly(1,3-adamantylene alkylene)s via Acyclic Diene Metathesis Polycondensation
2019
[Image: see text] Fully saturated, aliphatic polymers containing adamantane moieties evenly distributed along the polymer backbone are of great interest due to their exceptional thermal stability, yet more synthetic strategies toward these polymers would be desirable. Herein, we report for the first time the synthesis of poly(1,3-adamantylene alkylene)s based on α,ω-dienes containing bulky 1,3-adamantylene defects precisely located on every 11th, 17th, 19th, and 21st chain carbon via acyclic diene metathesis polycondensation. All saturated polymers revealed excellent thermal stabilities (452–456 °C) that were significantly higher compared to those of structurally similar polyolefins with al…
(1-Adamantyl)methyl glycidyl ether: a versatile building block for living polymerization.
2014
(1-Adamantyl)methyl glycidyl ether (AdaGE) is introduced as a versatile monomer for oxyanionic polymerization, enabling controlled incorporation of adamantyl moieties in aliphatic polyethers. Via copolymerization with ethoxyethyl glycidyl ether (EEGE) and subsequent cleavage of the acetal protection groups of EEGE, hydrophilic linear polyglycerols with an adjustable amount of pendant adamantyl moieties are obtained. The adamantyl unit permits control over thermal properties and solubility profile of these polymers (LCST). Additionally, AdaGE is utilized as a termination agent in carbanionic polymerization, affording adamantyl-terminated polymers. Using these structures as macroinitiators fo…
Entropy theory and glass transition: A test by Monte Carlo simulation
1997
This article reviews the results of a test of the Gibbs-DiMarzio theory by Monte Carlo Simulation. The simulation employed the bond-fluctuation model on a simple cubic lattice. This model incorporates two kinds of interactions: the excluded volume interaction among all monomers of the melt and an internal energy of the chains, which favors large bonds and makes the chains stiffen with decreasing temperature. The stiffening of the chains leads to an increase of their volume requirements, which competes with the packing constraints at low temperatures. This competition strongly slows down the structural relaxation of the melt and induces the glassy behavior. The model therefore takes into acc…

Crystal structure of 2-(adamantan-1-yl)-5-(4-bromophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole
2014
In the title molecule, C18H19BrN2O, the benzene ring is inclined to the oxadiazole ring by 10.44 (8)°. In the crystal, C—H...π interactions link the molecules in a head-to-tail fashion, forming chains extending along thec-axis direction. The chains are further connected by π–π stacking interactions, with centroid–centroid distances of 3.6385 (7) Å, forming layers parallel to thebcplane.
