GRASP & evolutionary path relinking for medical image registration based on point matching

2010

Image registration is a very active research area in computer vision. Image registration methods, aim to find a transformation between two images taken under different conditions. Point matching is an image registration approach based on searching for the right pairing of points between the two images. From this matching, the registration transformation can be inferred by means of numerical methods. In this paper, we tackle the medical image registration problem adapting a new advanced hybrid metaheuristic composed by the GRASP and the evolutionary path relinking algorithms, called G&EvPR. The experiments conducted in this work have shown the good performance of G&EvPR compared to similar a…

The ability to respond flexibly to changing environmental circumstances is a hallmark of goal-directed behavior, and compromised flexibility is associated with a wide range of psychiatric conditions in humans, such as addiction and stress-related disorders. To identify neural circuits and transmitter systems implicated in the provision of cognitive flexibility, suitable animal paradigms are needed. Ideally, such models should be easy to implement, allow for rapid task acquisition, provide multiple behavioral readouts, and permit combination with physiological and pharmacological testing and manipulation. Here, we describe a paradigm meeting these requirements and employ it to investigate th…

Reduction of the spherical aberration effect in high-numerical-aperture optical scanning instruments.

2006

In modern high-numerical-aperture (NA) optical scanning instruments, such as scanning microscopes, optical data storage systems, or laser trapping technology, the beam emerging from the high-NA objective focuses deeply through an interface between two media of different refractive index. Such a refractive index mismatch introduces an important amount of spherical aberration, which increases dynamically when scanning at increasing depths. This effect strongly degrades the instrument performance. Although in the past few years many different techniques have been reported to reduce the spherical aberration effect, no optimum solution has been found. Here we concentrate on a technique whose mai…

Wavelength-Gated Adaptation of Hydrogel Properties via Photo-Dynamic Multivalency in Associative Star Polymers.

2020

Abstract Responsive materials, such as switchable hydrogels, have been largely engineered for maximum changes between two states. In contrast, adaptive systems target distinct functional plateaus between these maxima. Here, we demonstrate how the photostationary state (PSS) of an E/Z‐arylazopyrazole photoswitch can be tuned by the incident wavelength across a wide color spectrum, and how this behavior can be exploited to engineer the photo‐dynamic mechanical properties of hydrogels based on multivalent photoswitchable interactions. We show that these hydrogels adapt to the wavelength‐dependent PSS and the number of arylazopyrazole units by programmable relationships. Hence, our material des…

Advanced Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure for the Obnoxious p-Median problem

2016

Abstract The Obnoxious p-Median problem consists in selecting a subset of p facilities from a given set of possible locations, in such a way that the sum of the distances between each customer and its nearest facility is maximized. The problem is NP -hard and can be formulated as an integer linear program. It was introduced in the 1990s, and a branch and cut method coupled with a tabu search has been recently proposed. In this paper, we propose a heuristic method – based on the Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure, GRASP, methodology – for finding approximate solutions to this optimization problem. In particular, we consider an advanced GRASP design in which a filtering mechanism avo…

Heuristics for the Bi-Objective Diversity Problem

2018

Abstract The Max-Sum diversity and the Max-Min diversity are two well-known optimization models to capture the notion of selecting a subset of diverse points from a given set. The resolution of their associated optimization problems provides solutions of different structures, in both cases with desirable characteristics. They have been extensively studied and we can find many metaheuristic methodologies, such as Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure, Tabu Search, Iterated Greedy, Variable Neighborhood Search, and Genetic algorithms applied to them to obtain high quality solutions. In this paper we solve the bi-objective problem in which both models are simultaneously optimized. No pre…

Time scales of adaptive behavior and motor learning in the presence of stochastic perturbations.

2009

In this paper, the major assumptions of influential approaches to the structure of variability in practice conditions are discussed from the perspective of a generalized evolving attractor landscape model of motor learning. The efficacy of the practice condition effects is considered in relation to the theoretical influence of stochastic perturbations in models of gradient descent learning of multiple dimension landscapes. A model for motor learning is presented combining simulated annealing and stochastic resonance phenomena against the background of different time scales for adaptation and learning processes. The practical consequences of the model's assumptions for the structure of pract…

The facility layout problem approached using a fuzzy model and a genetic search

2005

The problem of facility layout design is discussed, taking into account the uncertainty of production scenarios and the finite production capacity of the departments. The uncertain production demand is modelled by a fuzzy number, and constrained arithmetic operators are used in order to calculate the fuzzy material handling costs. By using a ranking criterion, the layout that represents the minimum fuzzy cost is selected. A flexible bay structure is adopted as a physical model of the system while an effective genetic algorithm is implemented to search for a near optimal solution in a fuzzy contest. Constraints on the aspect ratio of the departments are taken into account using a penalty fun…
