Generalization of Canny–Deriche filter for detection of noisy exponential edge

2002

This paper presents a generalization of the Canny-Deriche filter for ramp edge detection with optimization criteria used by Canny (signal-to-noise ratio, localization, and suppression of false responses). Using techniques similar to those developed by Deriche, we derive a filter which maximizes the product of the first two criteria under the constraint of the last one. The result is an infinite length impulse response filter which leads to a stable third-order recursive implementation. Its performance shows an increase of the signal-to-noise ratio in the case of blurred and noisy images, compared to the results obtained from Deriche's filter.

The Development of Conditional Reasoning: A Mental Model Account

2002

Abstract Conditional (if-then) reasoning is one of the key components of logical reasoning. Studies examining the way that children and adults make conditional inferences have shown that while there are some clear developmental patterns, there is also a great deal of variation in performance due to factors such as problem content. Such variation is difficult to model without an explicit process model. In the following we propose a variant of mental model theory (Johnson-Laird, 1983) that can explain much of the empirical data. This model suggests that the development of conditional reasoning can be explained, at least partly, by such factors as the capacity of working memory, the range of k…

Sensorless Control of Induction-Motor Drive Based on Robust Kalman Filter and Adaptive Speed Estimation

2014

This paper deals with robust estimation of rotor flux and speed for sensorless control of motion control systems with an induction motor. Instead of using sixth-order extended Kalman filters (EKFs), rotor flux is estimated by means of a fourth-order descriptor-type robust KF, which explicitly takes into account motor parameter uncertainties, whereas the speed is estimated using a recursive least squares algorithm starting from the knowledge of the rotor flux itself. It is shown that the descriptor-type structure allows for a direct translation of parameter uncertainties into variations of the coefficients appearing in the model, and this improves the degree of robustness of the estimates. E…

Towards Ecoism on the Road of Societal Resilience

2013

How citizens are able to understand eco-responsible conducts and a necessary community-based action in an individual world? With the "Transition Towns MOVIDA" project, we wish to identify levers related to a most collective and sustainable consumption. How our civilization can survive to a collective sclerosis accompanied with doomsayer's messages, increasing complexity and unstable governance? The present proposal consider major terms definition and practices, which can support the bounce to socio-ecological transition. When adaptive principles and practices runs for self-sufficiency and contributes to opportunity, availability or competition in a fragmented warming world, which behavioral…

An Adaptive Routing Mechanism for Efficient Resource Discovery in Unstructured P2P Networks

2005

The widespread adoption of large-scale decentralized peer-to-peer (P2P) systems imposes huge challenges on distributed search and routing. Decentralized and unstructured P2P networks are very attractive because they require neither centralized directories, nor precise control over network topology or data placement. However their search mechanisms are extremely unscalable, generating large loads on the network participants. In this paper, to address this major limitation, we propose and evaluate the adoption of an innovative algorithm for routing user queries. The proposed approach aims at dynamically adapting the network topology to peer interests, on the basis of query interactions among …

Well-Balanced Adaptive Mesh Refinement for shallow water flows

2014

Well-balanced shock capturing (WBSC) schemes constitute nowadays the state of the art in the numerical simulation of shallow water flows. They allow to accurately represent discontinuous behavior, known to occur due to the non-linear hyperbolic nature of the shallow water system, and, at the same time, numerically maintain stationary solutions. In situations of practical interest, these schemes often need to be combined with some kind of adaptivity, in order to speed up computing times. In this paper we discuss what ingredients need to be modified in a block-structured AMR technique in order to ensure that, when combined with a WBSC scheme, the so-called 'water at rest' stationary solutions…

Research and Projects for the Recovery of the “Tifeo” Power Station in Augusta, Sicily

2016

The buildings of the Tifeo Augusta Power Station (SR) significantly tell us, even today, the history of the Sicilian industrial dream at the end of the Fifties. However, with the passing of time, it revealed the underlying contradictions still present today in Augusta together with polluting and oppressive petrochemical plants built during those times. Regardless of any recovery theory about the Augusta Power Station, it is clear that an open and multidisciplinary look cannot be ignored, locating the power station in the actual and future setting of the vastest territory in which it is sited. The past, the present and, of course, the future of the Augusta area are tightly connected to the s…

Bacterial and viral infections and related inflammatory responses in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

2021

Abstract In chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients, bacterial and viral infections play a relevant role in worsening lung function and, therefore, favour disease progression. The inflammatory response to lung infections may become a specific indication of the bacterial and viral infections. We here review data on the bacterial–viral infections and related airways and lung parenchyma inflammation in stable and exacerbated COPD, focussing our attention on the prevalent molecular pathways in these different clinical conditions. The roles of macrophages, autophagy and NETosis are also briefly discussed in the context of lung infections in COPD. Controlling their combined response…

Vulnerability, freedom of choice and structural global injustice: The “consent” to exploitation of migrant women workers

2019

This chapter analyzes the philosophical implications related to the “position of vulnerability” defined by the Directive 2011/36/EU on Preventing and Combating Trafficking in Human Beings and Protecting its Victims as “a situation in which the person concerned has no real or acceptable alternative but to submit to the abuse involved” (art. 2.2). In particular, the chapter focuses on the “choice” made by migrant women employed in care and domestic work and in the agricultural sector in Italy. The Italian labor market is marked by the exploitation of migrant women, especially women from Romania, due to social, economic and legal factors that will be considered from a gender perspective. Women…

Il confronto delle idee. Visioni progettuali per un recupero possibile (The comparision of ideas. Design concepts for a possible recovery)

2016
