Emerging opportunities for the effective valorization of wastes and by-products generated during olive oil production process: Non-conventional metho…
2015
Abstract Background A large amount of wastes and by-products are generated during olive oil production process. Traditionally, these products have been considered as a problem. However, they constitute a great source of high-added value compounds, which have the potential to be used as food additives and/or nutraceuticals. Therefore, valorization of wastes and by-products from food industry kills two birds with one stone and addresses both the use of waste and by-products and societal health, thus greatly contributing for a sustainable food chain from an environmental and economical point of view. Scope and approach In the present review, current and new insights in the recovery of high-add…
Legumes in 21st century Europe: present and future importance in agri-food systems? New challenges for reseach.
2013
Intensification of agriculture since 1950 has globally led to the decline of grain legume crops, which currently represent less than 3 % of arable crops in France and Europe. Nevertheless, legumes have several major assets (i) as plant proteins for animal feed and human food and (ii) as plants fixing atmospheric N2 and thereby saving nitrogen inputs in cropping systems, and (iii) as diversification crops. The analysis of forage and grain legume producing systems in France showed that the dominant system results in a lock-in of the different factors limiting legume insertion into the current systems. But legumes could have a major role to play in the agroecological transition towards more su…
AN AGENT BASED ARCHITECTURE FOR MANUFACTURING E-MARKETPLACES
2005
This chapter presents the Agent Based Architecture developed within the research project, titled "Process and Production Planning in manufacturing Enterprise Networks". As mentioned in Chapter 1, the architecture has been developed to support “added value services” in neutral linear e-marketplaces, i.e. in virtual districts. In this chapter the architecture will be described from a functional and dynamic point of view by using the formalisms used in the project. In particular, from a functional perspective, the architecture is described by using the IDEF0 formalism, while its dynamics are specified by UML activity diagrams.
Clarifying Skills and Competencies in Organisational Decision Making – Perceptions of Finnish Communication Professionals
2017
This paper seeks to better understand the skills and competencies that Public Relations (PR) professionals use in contributing to organisational decision-making processes. The data were collected by interviewing Finnish professionals using thematic semi-structured interviews. Overall, the results highlight a deep understanding of organisation management and decision-making processes. The most important competencies were business understanding and target group oriented thinking. The findings indicate that important skills are related to writing and social media. ‘Regarding personal attributes, interaction and tolerance to criticism were acknowledged as most crucial. The conclusions suggest t…
Potential of Baltic Region Peat in High Added-value Products and Environmentally Friendly Applications - A Review
2021
The present review is dedicated to using of peat on the example of fen peat in high added-value products and applications. Mainly, but not limited, last decade literature was analysed from the perspective of innovation potential of peat applications in environmental technologies on examples of studies from the Baltic Sea region. Paper covers a wide range of applications of peat products started from agriculture to medicine and cosmetics. A separate chapter is devoted to the deep-processed peat product - humic substances (humate, humic and fulvic salts and acids). Generalised dependence of product extraction rate and its properties, depending on the process parameters are provided. Widely ar…
The dynamics of Italian competitive positioning in the Mediterranean Bluefin tuna industry
2020
The bluefin tuna or Thunnus thynnus is one of the widely recognised fish species since ancient times. Italy is the most important players in the international arena, however, the introduction of a system of total allowable catches and other measures established by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas, has deeply changed the competitive positioning of Italy. The aim of this study is to perform an analysis of the comparative advantage of Italy by using the relative trade advantage index. Findings reveal that Italy has gained a competitive advantage in the Maltese market and has suffered a loss of the historical competitive advantage in the Japanese one. Results …
The Correlation Between Human Capital and Gross Added Value in the Bioeconomy Sectors at the European Union (EU) Country Level
2019
Abstract The paper aims to prove the link between human capital and gross added value in bioeconomy sectors in the EU countries. Data from EUROSTAT data base regarding employment and gross added value in 6 bioeconomy sectors were used in a cross-country regression analysis. The econometric analysis of cross-country data shows a positive correlation between human capital in bioeconomy sectors and their gross output in 2015 in 26 European countries. It is found also that the correlation is stronger in the highly developed economies as in the central-eastern countries, as well as in the European economy.
Do key audit matters (KAMs) matter? : Auditors’ perceptions of KAMs and audit quality in Finland
2021
Purpose Key audit matters (KAMs) in International Standard for Auditing, 701 seek to enhance the value of the auditor’s report by increasing the transparency of how the audit was performed. The purpose of this study is to investigate how professional auditors themselves perceive the impact of KAMs on audit quality and audit effectiveness. Design/methodology/approach Statistical analyses of an electronic survey of certified public auditors (CPAs) in Finland. Findings Regarding the perceptions of KAMs, the authors found two dominant views on auditing: quality and efficiency. In general, the respondents did not consider that KAMs improve audit quality. However, auditors focusing on efficiency…
Anonymization as homeomorphic data space transformation for privacy-preserving deep learning
2021
Industry 4.0 is largely data-driven nowadays. Owners of the data, on the one hand, want to get added value from the data by using remote artificial intelligence tools as services, on the other hand, they concern on privacy of their data within external premises. Ideal solution for this challenge would be such anonymization of the data, which makes the data safe in remote servers and, at the same time, leaves the opportunity for the machine learning algorithms to capture useful patterns from the data. In this paper, we take the problem of supervised machine learning with deep feedforward neural nets and provide an anonymization algorithm (based on the homeomorphic data space transformation),…
