Essential oils as natural additives to prevent oxidation reactions in meat and meat products: A review
2018
Oxidation reactions during manufacturing, distribution, and storage of meat and meat products result in undesirable physicochemical changes and aromas, which leads to detrimental effects on the product quality. This could be translated into the consumer dissatisfaction and economic loss. One of the most common practices to overcome this issue is the incorporation of synthetic antioxidants. However, the increasing health-consciousness of consumers and their preference for natural additives leads to the search of natural alternatives to synthetic antioxidants. A number of essential oils have strong antioxidant properties and are explored as potential alternatives to chemical antioxidants in t…
Path Integral Method for Nonlinear Systems Under Levy White Noise
2017
In this paper, the probabilistic response of nonlinear systems driven by alpha-stable Lévy white noises is considered. The path integral solution is adopted for determining the evolution of the probability density function of nonlinear oscillators. Specifically, based on the properties of alpha-stable random variables and processes, the path integral solution is extended to deal with Lévy white noises input with any value of the stability index alpha. It is shown that at the limit when the time increments tend to zero, the Einstein–Smoluchowsky equation, governing the evolution of the response probability density function, is fully restored. Application to linear and nonlinear systems under…
Comparing cetacean abundance estimates derived from spatial models and design-based line transect methods
2007
Spatial modelling is increasingly being used as an alternative to conventional design- based line transect sampling to estimate cetacean abundance. This new method combines line transect sampling with spatial analysis to predict animal abundance based on the relationship of ani- mals observed to environmental factors. It presents several advantages including: (1) the ability to use data collected from 'platforms of opportunity', (2) the ability to estimate abundance for any defined subarea within the study area, and (3) the possibility for increased precision if covariates explain sufficient variability in the data. One study has been conducted to compare spatial modelling with conventional…
Spatial Distribution and Abundance of Mesopelagic Fish Biomass in the Mediterranean Sea
2020
Mesopelagic fish, being in the middle of the trophic web, are important key species for the marine environment; yet limited knowledge exists about their biology and abundance. This is particularly true in the Mediterranean Sea where no regional assessment is currently undertaken regarding their biomass and/or distribution. This study evaluates spatial and temporal patterns of mesopelagic fish biomass in the 1994–2011 period. We do that for the whole Mediterranean Sea using two well-established statistical models, the Generalized Additive Model (GAM) and Random Forest (RF). Results indicate that the bathymetry played an important role in the estimation of mesopelagic fish biomass and in its …
Mechanical Bistable Structures for Microrobotics and Mesorobotics from Microfabrication to Additive Manufacturing
2018
International audience; The use of mechanical bistable structures in the design of microrobots and mesorobots has many advantages especially for flexible robotic structures. However, depending on the fabrication technology used, the adequacy of theoretical and experimental mechanical behaviors can vary widely. In this paper, we present the manufacturing results of bistable structures made with two extensively used contemporary technologies: MEMS and FDM additive manufacturing. Key issues of these fabrication technologies are discussed in the context of microrobotics and mesorobotics applications.
Effect of additives on the structural organization of asphaltene aggregates in bitumen
2019
Abstract Bitumens are composite materials whose complex organization hinders the rational understanding of their relationships between composition, structure and performances. So, research attempting to shed more light in this field is required. In this work Wide Angle X ray Scattering (WAXS) has been used to explore the influence of six opportunely chosen additives on the bitumen structure with the aim to ultimately correlate the findings with the bitumen performances. Diagnostic fingerprints have been observed in the WAXS profile: asphaltenes form stuck of about 18 A and constituted by about 6 asphaltene units on average. Such stucks are, in turn, organized at higher levels of complexity …
The bistable system: an archetypal model for complex systems
2011
Bistable systems often play the role of archetypal models to understand the dynamical behavior of complex systems. Examples range from microphysics to macrophysics, bìology, chemistry and also econophysics. Moreover the statistical mechanics is essential to study the physical properties of complex systems and to investigate stochastic systems in which the microscopic degrees of freedom behave collectively over large scales. We investigate the nonlinear relaxation in a bistable system in classical and quantum systems. (i) As a first classical system, the role of the multiplicative and additive noise in the mean life time of the metastable state of an asymmetric bistable system is investigate…

Ensuring food safety using aptamer based assays: Electroanalytical approach
2020
Aptamers, are being increasingly employed as favorable receptors for constructing highly sensitive biosensors, for their remarkable affinities towards certain targets including a wide scope of biological or chemical substances, and their superiority over other biologic receptors. The selectivity and affinity of the aptamers have been integrated with the wise design of the assay, applying suitable modifications, such as nanomaterials on the electrode surface, employing oligonucleotide-specific amplification strategies or, their combinations. After successful performance of the electrochemical aptasensors for biomedical applications, the food sector with its direct implication for human healt…
