Rapid maxillary expansion and obstructive sleep apnea: a review and meta-analysis
2016
Background: OSAS during childhood leads to significant physical and neuropsychomotor impairment. Thus, it needs to be recognized and treated early in order to avoid or attenuate the chronic problems associated with OSAS, which are deleterious to a child’s development. Adenotonsillectomy and, in select cases, continuous positive airwaypressure (CPAP) have been the preferred treatments for OSAS in children, and yet they are ineffective at fully ameliorating the disease. Minimally invasive treatments have recently been proposed, comprising intra-oral and extra-oral devices as well as speech therapy. Objetive: to conduct a meta-analysis on studies from around the world that used rapid maxillary…
The role of acoustic rhinometry in the diagnosis of adenoidal hypertrophy in pre-school children.
1999
Adenoidal hypertrophy is a common problem in pre-school children and diagnosis depends mostly on evaluation of clinical symptoms and signs. Investigative techniques to assess adenoidal size often do not add to this information. Recent reports have suggested a role for acoustic rhinometry in this situation. A total of 49 children consecutively referred to the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, University of Mainz, with evidence of adenoidal enlargement underwent acoustic rhinometry pre- and post-operatively and were compared to an age-matched control group from a local kindergarten school. Adenoidal size was visually estimated at surgery and questionnaires were completed by parents of sympto…
Impact of adenotonsillectomy on the evolution of inflammatory markers
2019
Background Tonsils are first-line host defence organs against pathogenic agents and participate in local and systemic immunity. Persistent increases in systemic inflammatory responses may contribute to associated morbidity. The aim of this study was to verify the short- and long-term impact of adenotonsillectomy on the evolution of inflammatory markers in 3- to 9-year-old children. Methods A prospective and longitudinal study was conducted over 1 year in 29 children who underwent tonsillectomy due to either chronic tonsillitis or adenotonsillar hypertrophy. Measurements of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels were taken. Levels of Th1-type cytokines [interleukin-1, interferon…
L'ADENOIDECTOMIA PER VIA ENDOSCOPICA
2012
PEDIATRIC OSAS TREATED WITH ADENOIDECTOMY: A COHORT STUDY CONDUCTED AT THE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL OF PALERMO, ITALY
2021
The incidence of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) in the pediatric population is about 2%. The diagnosis is based on the employment of questionnaires, and polysomnography (PSG) that is the gold standard also among children. The PSG allows to classify OSAS as mild in case of 110. If polysomnography is not available, we need alternative diagnostic tests such as nocturnal oximetry studies and respiratory polygraphy. The risk factors identified are different from adults, first tonsillar hypertrophy wins over others. The symptoms and signs described are similar to adult population, but sleep enuresis, neurocognitive impairment and behavioral problems (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disor…
