Experimental evaluation of the reliability of the adhesive joint in a 3rd-generation-solar-cell-integrated glass block
2017
Glass block is a building product that has been widely used since the mid-1800s for the construction of natural light capturing technical elements and, in the last decades, of translucent building envelopes. In a framework of increased quality requirements in terms of energy saving and environmental sustainability, innovations have been introduced to its standard configuration, including the integration of 3rd generation solar cells within the glass block, in order to improve its performance and make it capable of producing clean energy. Indeed, one of the two constituting glass shells has been integrated with a pre-assembled photovoltaic module and then bonded to a plastic “thermal belt” a…
Influence of the distance between rivets in self-piercing riveting bonded joints made of carbon fiber panels and AA2024 blanks
2012
Abstract The increasing use of new materials alternative to steel in manufacturing industry has led to a greater emphasis on the improvement and the development of specific joining approaches allowing to get effective mechanical properties even when different materials are joined together. It should be observed that often the traditional welding techniques show several limitations as aluminum or magnesium alloys are used, and, what is more, they are not compatible with composite materials. The development of structures made of these materials has renewed the use of mechanical fastening operations. The present paper investigates the influence of the distance between rivets in self-piercing r…
Environmentally Friendly Composites and Surface Treatments for Metal-to-Composite Hybrid Joints for Marine Application
2022
In this study, the use of natural fibres (flax and basalt) in combination with a recyclable epoxy matrix based on cleavable amines is suggested for improving the sustainability of marine industry. In addition, a new and eco-friendly anodizing process based on tartaric sulfuric acid solution (TSA) and a pore widening step in a NaOH aqueous solution was carried out on aluminium alloy (AA5083) to evaluate its effect on the adhesion strength and damage tolerance after low velocity impact of co-cured adhesive joints with a basalt fibre reinforced and recyclable laminate. The durability in marine environment was simulated by exposing samples to salt-fog spray conditions over a period of 90 days. …
In vitro evaluation of the antibacterial activity of cured dentin/enamel adhesive incorporating the antimicrobial agent MDPB
2010
The aim of this study was to investigate in vitro the antibacterial effect of a dentin/enamel adhesive containing MDPB (Clearfil Protect Bond) after curing and to compare it with an adhesive not containing MDPB (Clearfil SE Bond). The antibacterial effect of the cured adhesives was tested on Enterococcus faecalis by the evaluation of growth inhibition in a 48-h microplate direct contact test (DCT). The presence of antibacterial activity due to soluble components was also investigated by an agar diffusion test (ADT) performed with the adhesives cured on the surface of dentin disks. In the DCT, both the tested materials showed complete inhibition of bacterial growth until the 7-h reading, reg…
Otite media atelettasica, adesiva, timpanosclerotica: update medico e chirurgico
2011
Otitis media secretive is one of the most common ear diseases characterized by frequent sequelae and complications; in particular the authors describe middle ear atelectasis with pocket retraction of tympanic membrane, pocket retraction limited to pars tensa or to pars flaccida, adhesive otitis media, partial or total myringosclerosis and tympanosclerosis. For each disease the Authors comment the best surgical approaches to preserve and restore conductive hearing loss. As for middle ear atelectasis, adhesive otitis media, myringosclerosis and partial tympanosclerosis it was evidenced a significant hearing gain while in total tympanosclerosis there was an initial hearing improvement in a sho…
Adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder: laser CO2 vs intra-articular injections
2012
Analysis of our data shows that the functional rehabilitation associated with the CO2 laser causes a greater reduction in pain, better recovery of joint ROM and increase in muscle strength compared to treatment associated with injections of corticosteriods
Consistency of Carbopol 971-P NF gels and influence of soluble and cross-linked PVP.
2002
A study is made of the polymerization process of polyacrylic acid, commercially known as Carbopol® 971 NF, assessing its consistency as a function of the degree of neutralization at pH values from 3 to 12, approximately. Percentage concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 1.4% (w/w) were studied. The gels obtained were non-Newtonian, and pseudoplastic. As concentration and pH rise, the consistency of the gels increase to a maximum, which appears between pH 6 and 8, allowing their use as vehicles in bioadhesive formulations for mucosal application. Over the increasing viscosity interval, functions were obtained to indicate the consistency of the gel as a function of pH and concentration. Since the…
Adhesive capsulitis in a patient affected by KBG Syndrome
2021
Background and Case presentation: KBG syndrome is a multiple congenital anomaly syndrome with variable presentation. Many physical anomalies also affect the orthopaedic field. We present a case of a young woman with diagnosis of KBG syndrome that is also affected by joint stiffness and adhesive capsulitis to the shoulders. Discussion: Many other cases have been reported to present joint stiffness and formation of keloids. Adhesive capsulitis is known to be related to autoimmune pathologies and endocrinological disorders. KBG syndrome is caused by heterozygous mutation in ANKRD11 gene and few patients with hypermobility of the joints have also been reported. Conclusions: The KBG syndrome mig…
Bioadhesive monolayer film for the in vitro transdermal delivery of sumatriptan
2006
The work presented here aims to develop a bioadhesive monolayer film containing sumatriptan as adjuvant for the treatment of headache pain in a severe migraine attack. Permeation experiments were performed from the films prepared and from the respective solution, to evaluate the relevant permeation parameters. The effect of the penetration enhancers Transcutol, 2-pyrrolidone, and polyethylene glycol 600 was evaluated. The results obtained show that Transcutol and 2-pyrrolidone decreased sumatriptan permeation from solution, whereas a modest increase was produced by polyethylene glycol 600. The enhancers produced the same effects when they were included in the film. Compared to solution, the…
