“The Chinese Will Not Change; We Have To Change” : Adjustment of the Finns to the Chinese in a Chinese Investment Facilitation Context
2017
This paper explores the intercultural communication, cultural adjustment strategies and power relations between Finnish and Chinese representatives in the context of Chinese investment facilitation in Finland. The study is mostly based on interviews of individuals who work either for one of Finland’s state agencies tasked with attracting investment or local government. When analyzing aspects of power, the paper’s theoretical basis is the Positioning Theory of Harré (1991). Due to the phenomenon of ‘rising China’, the dominant discursive practice of the Finnish positioning is adaption to a communication and working style seen as typically Chinese. The results show the main aspects of Chinese…
The Bayesian estimation of private investment in Finland
2009
Abstract This paper estimates an investment equation for private investment using Bayesian estimation techniques. In the paper we derive the optimal capital accumulation behavior in the model economy from the households’ optimization problem of utility. The equation is derived as in Smets and Wouters (2003). The model contains costly adjustment of investment and random shocks to adjustment cost function. The driving variable of investment is Tobin Q variable. The empirical proxy for Tobin Q in this paper is the ratio of OMX Helsinki Cap Index to the price index of the physical capital. The investment series is the seasonally adjusted private investment in quarterly national accounts. The AR…
La percezione del supporto sociale ed emotivo nel processo di adattamento alla malattia: uno studio con pazienti oncologici e loro caregivers.
2008
Purpose: this study aims to investigate the role of social and emotional support in predicting patient adjustment to cancer. Patients and method: 80 patients with I stage cancer (mean age: 56,02) and their respective caregivers (mean age: 46,4) are included in the study. Participants are recruited in an outpatient oncology clinic. Most of patients (71,2%) have a breast cancer, and are treated with conservative surgery and mastectomy. Most of caregivers (78,7%) belong to patients’ family. Results and discussion: patients’ perception of social support from friends and emotional support given to caregivers predict a better adjustment to cancer, reducing negative feelings and a resigned attitud…
A GEM-TPC in twin configuration for the Super-FRS tracking of heavy ions at FAIR
2018
The GEM-TPC [1] described herein will be part of the standard beam-diagnostics equipment of the Super-FRS [2] . This chamber will provide tracking information for particle identification at rates up to 1 MHz on an event-by-event basis. The key requirements of operation for these chambers are: close to 100% tracking efficiency under conditions of high counting rate, spatial resolution below 1 mm and a superb large dynamic range covering projectiles from Z=1 up to Z=92. The current prototype consists of two GEM-TPCs inside a single vessel, which are operating independently and have electrical drift fields in opposite directions. The twin configuration is done by flipping one of the GEM-TPCs o…
Integración y transformación económica en África: potencial y limitaciones del Área de Libre Comercio Continental Africana
2021
In March 2018, the African Union gave way to the establishment of the African Continental Free Trade Area, the largest area of economic integration in the world by number of countries involved. As of June 2020, 54 out of 55 African Union member countries have already signed the agreement, thus showing an almost complete unanimity on this topic. AfCFTA comes up when industrialisation strategies and economic transformation in Africa seem to have taken over orthodox structural adjustment and post-adjustment approaches. AfCFTA aims to increase the scarce intra-African trade, boost economic transformation, create the regional value chains and help African firms to join the global value chains. I…
Initial results of the Italian project on direct georeferencing in aerial Photogrammetry
2004
The paper describes one of the first outcomes of an Italian national research Project on inertial positioning in photogrammetry. The focus of the paper is on the quality which is attainable from direct photogrammetry in an industrial production context. Even if GPS/IMU-aided photogrammetry is used rather widely, it is still useful to perform rigorous quality assessment of this method, because large and diverse case studies are necessary to prove and quantify the capability of a new methodology. Besides, it is necessary to evaluate such methodology in the ordinary operational conditions, rather than considering data acquired in a dedicated, special context. To fulfil these requirements sever…
Quality of Life-a Goal for Schizophrenia's Therapy.
2017
Quality of Life (QOL) assessment represents a good instrument to monitor the evolution of schizophrenia and the treatment’s outcomes. The present study has evaluated the relationship between the level of the QOL and different socio-demographical and clinical factors. Lower QOL for schizophrenic persons was influenced by the severity of symptoms and cognitive deficits, while same low level of QOL could be considered an indicator for suicidal behavior. The correct therapeutically management of individuals with schizophrenia could lead to better outcomes in terms of life satisfaction of patients and response to the treatment’s strategies.
Data from: Daphnia females adjust sex allocation in response to current sex ratio and density
2019
Cyclical parthenogenesis presents an interesting challenge for the study of sex allocation, as individuals’ allocation decisions involve both the choice between sexual and asexual reproduction, and the choice between sons and daughters. Male production is therefore expected to depend on ecological and evolutionary drivers of overall investment in sex, and those influencing male reproductive value during sexual periods. We manipulated experimental populations, and made repeated observations of natural populations over their growing season, to disentangle effects of population density and the timing of sex from effects of adult sex ratio on sex allocation in cyclically parthenogenetic Daphnia…
