Promotions and Earnings – Gender or Merit? Evidence from Longitudinal Personnel Data
2017
This study examines the determinants of promotions, performance evaluations and earnings using unique longitudinal data from the personnel records of a large university. The study focuses on the role of gender in remuneration using, first, information on the complexity ratings of job tasks to define promotions on job ladders and, second, information on objective individual productivity. The study finds that individual research productivity was an important determinant of promotions and earnings. The results indicate that gender has no effect on the probability of being promoted, conditional on productivity, nor does it play a role in the performance evaluation of employees. Furthermore, the…
The Role of Parliament in Sustainable Development Goals: A Case Study of Southeast Asia in International Parliamentary Forums
2021
Parliament has its role in supporting Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). SDG number 16 on peace, justice, and strong institution states one indicator of a legislative institution (for “responsive, inclusive, participatory and representative”, that the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) commits to achieve. However, parliament must support the government in achieving all SDG programs as stated in Agenda 2030. What is the role of parliament in this and how to achieve it? This paper aims to show that the role of parliament in SDG is beyond the traditional legislative role of legislating, budgeting and overseeing the government, but more on representing people, meaning channeling people’s voice a…
Student employment in France: Hindrance rather than help for higher educational success?
2021
International audience; In this study, we examine how student employment impacts higher educational trajectories in France. Focussing on undergraduates’ educational outcomes, we show the consequences of different intensities and levels of recurrence of student employment on perseverance in higher education. We use data from a nationally representative four-year longitudinal survey, descriptive analysis and logistic regression are performed to control for student characteristics. Our results suggest that student employment, especially when intensive and during periods of exams, increases exam failure. When it is recurrent over time, student employment often leads to university dropout. Furth…
WEB 2.0 ET MUSÉES Les nouveaux visages du visiteur
2012
WEB 2.0AND MUSEUMS: THE NEW EACES OF THE VISITOR The increasing integration of techniques from Web 2.0 by the museums illustrates the profound changes that these structures have realized in building their relationship with the audience. The use of these devices, based on a logic of participation, leads to involve the visitor, traditionally rather kept at a distance, on all stages of the implemeritation of the mUseum offered on Internet. Through a careful examinât icin of sites arid features offered by the museal structures, different roles now devolved to the public have been identified. The emergence of these new "faces" of the visitor comes to question, in the longer-term, about the ident…
USING THE ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (EMS) TO CONTROL THE IMPLEMENTATION AND EMERGENCE OF GREEN STRATEGIES.
2009
To respond to the ecological challenges of the new century and their Environmental and Social Responsability, more and more companies adopt the Environmental Management System (EMS). The objective of this thesis is to analyze how this management system is used in French companies for implement their ''intended" green strategies and to explore the new green strategies. Then, our research methodology is composed of three phases succeeding: an e…
Hormesis: Decoding Two Sides of the Same Coin
2015
In the paradigm of drug administration, determining the correct dosage of a therapeutic is often a challenge. Several drugs have been noted to demonstrate contradictory effects per se at high and low doses. This duality in function of a drug at different concentrations is known as hormesis. Therefore, it becomes necessary to study these biphasic functions in order to understand the mechanistic basis of their effects. In this article, we focus on different molecules and pathways associated with diseases that possess a duality in their function and thus prove to be the seat of hormesis. In particular, we have highlighted the pathways and factors involved in the progression of cancer and how t…
