Incidence, features, and outcomes of cytomegalovirus DNAemia in unmanipulated haploidentical allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation with …
2019
Background Conflicting data have been published as to the risk of cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNAemia and CMV disease in patients undergoing haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (haplo-HSCT) with post-transplantation cyclophosphamide. Methods We conducted a multicenter retrospective study including 118 patients subjected to unmanipulated haplo-HSCT to further clarify this issue. An historic cohort comprising 165 patients undergoing other transplant modalities (HLA-matched related, matched unrelated or mismatched) was built for comparison purposes. Plasma CMV DNA monitoring was performed using two highly sensitive real-time PCR assays. Results Overall, the cumulative incidence of…
Acute pre-learning stress and declarative memory: impact of sex, cortisol response and menstrual cycle phase.
2012
This study explores the influence of pre-learning stress on performance on declarative memory tasks in healthy young adults in relation to sex and menstrual cycle phase. The sample was composed of 119 students (32 men and 87 women) from 18 to 25 years of age. The women were tested in different hormonal stages (30 in follicular phase, 34 in luteal phase, and 23 using oral contraceptives). The participants were exposed to the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) or a control condition. Afterwards, their memory performance was measured using a standardized memory test (Rey's Auditory Verbal Learning Test). In the control condition, all groups of women recalled more words than men, but these differe…
A prospective, randomized, controlled trial comparing three different gonadotropin regimens in oocyte donors: ovarian response, in vitro fertilizatio…
2009
Objective To compare the efficacy of three different gonadotropin regimens in an oocyte donation program. The analysis of cost minimization also was evaluated. Design Prospective, randomized, controlled study. Setting Instituto Universitario–IVI, Valencia, Spain. Patient(s) One thousand twenty-eight donors undergoing a GnRH agonist protocol were assigned randomly to one of three groups: group 1 (n = 346), only recombinant FSH (rFSH); group 2 (n = 333), only highly purified menotropin (HP-hMG); and group 3 (n = 349), rFSH plus HP-hMG. One thousand seventy-nine oocyte recipients. Intervention(s) Controlled ovarian stimulation. Main Outcome Measure(s) Controlled ovarian stimulation parameters,…
Thyrotropin-releasing hormone has stimulatory effects on ventilation in humans
1991
Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) stimulates pituitary thyrotropin synthesis and release and also regulates autonomic nervous system functions by acting as a neuromodulator and neurotransmitter. In experimental animals a stimulation of ventilation by thyrotropin-releasing hormone was shown when applied at central nervous system sites that affect respiratory motor output. It was the goal of our study to investigate the respiratory properties of thyrotropin-releasing hormone on basal and stimulated (i.e. CO2-rebreathing) conditions following systemic thyrotropin-releasing hormone application in healthy humans. Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (200 micrograms, 400 micrograms intravenous) initia…
Thyroid Stimulating Antibodies Are Highly Prevalent in Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and Associated Orbitopathy
2016
Thyroid-associated orbitopathy (TAO) rarely occurs in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT).There is evidence that TSH receptor stimulating antibodies (TSAb) play a role in the pathogenesis of TAO. In this report, the prevalence of TSAb in HT patients with and without TAO was studied. This is a longitudinal observational study. The study took place in an academic joint thyroid-eye clinic.A total of 1055 subjects were included.TSAb was measured with a Food and Drug Administration-cleared bioassay that uses Chinese hamster ovary cells expressing a chimeric TSH receptor and a cAMP response element-dependent luciferase. Results of TSAb activity were reported as percentage of specimen-to-refe…
Prospective Trial of Functional Thyrotropin Receptor Antibodies in Graves Disease
2019
Abstract Context Scarce data exist regarding the relevance of stimulatory (TSAb) and blocking (TBAb) thyrotropin receptor antibodies in the management of Graves disease (GD). Objective To evaluate the clinical utility and predictive value of TSAb/TBAb. Design Prospective 2-year trial. Setting Academic tertiary referral center. Patients One hundred consecutive, untreated, hyperthyroid GD patients. Methods TSAb was reported as percentage of specimen-to-reference ratio (SRR) (cutoff SRR < 140%). Blocking activity was defined as percent inhibition of luciferase expression relative to induction with bovine thyrotropin (TSH, thyroid stimulating hormone) alone (cutoff > 40% inhibitio…
Prevalence and clinical relevance of thyroid stimulating hormone receptor-blocking antibodies in autoimmune thyroid disease
2017
Summary The prevalence and clinical relevance of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) receptor (TSHR) blocking antibodies (TBAb) in patients with autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) was investigated. Serum TBAb were measured with a reporter gene bioassay using Chinese hamster ovary cells. Blocking activity was defined as percentage inhibition of luciferase expression relative to induction with bovine TSH alone (cut-off 40% inhibition). All samples were measured for TSHR stimulatory antibody (TSAb) and TSHR binding inhibiting immunoglobulins (TBII). A total of 1079 unselected, consecutive patients with AITD and 302 healthy controls were included. All unselected controls were negative for TBAb and…
Subcutaneous gonadotropin therapy in male patients with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism
1991
Objective The response to subcutaneous (SC) gonadotropin replacement therapy, using human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and human menopausal gonadotropin (hMG) or hCG alone, was evaluated in male hypothalamic hypogonadism. Design Sixteen patients with hypothalamic hypogonadism were treated with gonadotropins for induction of puberty and normalization of spermatogenesis. The results were analyzed retrospectively. Setting The study was carried out in a clinical endocrinology department providing tertiary care and in private practices of endocrinology. Patients Eight patients with idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and eight patients with Kallmann's syndrome in prepubertal or early pubert…
Prevalence, Phenotype, and Psychosocial Well-Being in Euthyroid/Hypothyroid Thyroid-Associated Orbitopathy.
2015
At the onset of thyroid-associated orbitopathy (TAO), most patients are hyperthyroid, while scarce data are available on euthyroid/hypothyroid TAO. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence, phenotype, and psychosocial burden of patients with initially euthyroid/hypothyroid TAO.The medical records of 461 consecutive and unselected patients with TAO followed at a specialized joint thyroid-eye clinic were analyzed within this retrospective cross-sectional study. Main outcome measures were the prevalence of initially eu- or hypothyroid TAO as well as ophthalmic signs and symptoms, disease-specific quality of life (QoL), work impairment, and rate of psychotherapy in initially eu-/hypot…
Regional distribution of opioidergic nerves in human and canine prostates
1989
The regional distribution of opioidergic nerves in the juvenile and adult human prostate and in the adult canine prostate has been studied immunohistochemically using well-characterized polyclonal antisera against multiple opioid peptides. Nerves displaying immunoreactivity (ir) for the proenkephalin (PRO-ENK) derivatives met-enkephalin (ME), leuenkephalin (LE), octapeptide, and heptapeptide (ordered in decreasing frequency) were present in the dorsolateral stroma of human prostate. In canine prostate, the situation was similar, but the number of opioid-ir nerve fibers was lower than in human prostate. In both species, staining for the prodynorphin (PRO-DYN) derivatives dynorphin A and alph…
