Novel Perspectives in the Detection of Oral and Nasal Oxidative Stress and Inflammation in Pediatric United Airway Diseases

2010

United airway disease (UAD) concept proposed that asthma and rhinitis are both different clinical manifestation of a single inflammatory process. The aim of this study is to assess in upper and lower airways the level of inflammation and oxidative stress and to investigate the relationship between biomarkers in persistent allergic rhinitis (PER) and in concomitant asthma with PER. By a crosssectional study we measured oral and nasal (FENO) and oral and nasal EBC 8-isoprostane, LTB4 and PGE2 in children with PER (n=14) and with PER and concomitant intermittent asthma (IA; n=25), mild persistent asthma (mA; n=28), moderate persistent asthma (MA; n=13) and in Healthy Controls (HCs; n=13). Socioemotional functioning across the transition to lower secondary school : The role of temperament and relationships with mothers and teachers

2023

This Finnish longitudinal study investigated the role of relationships with mothers (n = 631) and teachers (n = 56), and adolescents' (n = 848; 53.9% girls, 46.1% boys) temperament in the development of the adolescents' socioemotional functioning during the transition to lower secondary school (Grade 6 to Grade 7; age in Grade 6: M = 12.32, SD = 0.36). The results showed that mother–adolescent closeness predicted a higher level and teacher–adolescent closeness predicted a smaller decrease in prosocial behavior. Teacher–adolescent conflict predicted a higher level, and mother–adolescent conflict predicted an increase in externalizing problems. Only temperament predicted internalizing problem…

Reading in students with deafness: An eye-movement research

2020

This thesis focused on describing the online reading pattern of deaf and hard of hearing students (DHH) and the factors that affect it. Previous studies have widely reported and described the difficulties that students with DHH demonstrate during reading. However, there are still some questions in which results do not converge (e.g., Do students with DHH ignore grammatical cues during sentence reading? Do they adapt their reading according to text demands?). Therefore, these questions remain open to new procedures that can disentangle or at least contribute to the understanding of DHH students' reading problems. So far, the vast majority of the studies have approached this issue by measurin…

The Role of Individual- and Macro-Level Social Determinants on Young Adolescents’ Psychosomatic Complaints

2011

This study examines the social determinants of psychosomatic complaints in young adolescents. Using data from the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study, psychosomatic complaints are studied in 98,773 adolescents (11- and 13-year-olds; 48% 11-year-olds, 52% 13-year-olds; 52% females, 48% males) from 34 European countries. Individual-level determinants, including family-, peer- and school-related factors as well as country-level determinants (Human Development Index [HDI]) are considered. In line with existing evidence, results revealed more psychosomatic complaints in young adolescents experiencing stress inducing familial-, peer- and school-related factors. Negative effects…

Children and Parental Barriers to Active Commuting to School: A Comparison Study

2021

The main objectives of this study were: to compare the barriers to active commuting to and from school (ACS) between children and their parents separately for children and adolescents; and to analyze the association between ACS and the children’s and parents’ barriers. A total of 401 child–parent pairs, from Granada, Jaén, Toledo and Valencia, self-reported, separately, their mode of commuting to school and work, respectively, and the children’s barriers to ACS. T-tests and chi-square tests were used to analyze the differences by age for continuous and categorical variables, respectively. Binary logistic regressions were performed to study the association between ACS barriers of children an…

Hopes and Fears for the Future Among Chinese Adolescents

2014

This study examined the contents of adolescents' hopes and fears for the future in a sample of 1,975 urban and rural 8th, 10th, and 12th graders in China. Chinese adolescents' hopes and fears were most often related to future education, occupation, parental well-being, marriage and family, academics, leisure activities, wealth, interpersonal relationships, collective issues, and self-related issues. Urban adolescents compared to rural ones reported more hopes for education and leisure activities and held fewer hopes and fears for parental well-being and interpersonal relationships. Reflecting on the PRET A Rapporter Framework Via a Field Study of Adolescents’ Perceptions of Technology and Exercise

2013

PRET A Rapporter (PRETAR) was developed to explicitly structure user-centered evaluation studies to ensure all necessary elements are individually and independently considered. Its creators see its benefit as twofold: for study design and in retrospective evaluations. We evaluate PRETAR’s potential by applying it retrospectively to one of our eHealth field studies in which we investigated the design requirements for mobile technologies that would support and motivate adolescents to exercise opportunistically. We also use PRETAR to evaluate the key literature for this eHealth study. This shows that typically the research methodology is under-reported. Then we document the study in terms of i…
