Influence of the luminance level on visual performance with a disposable soft cosmetic tinted contact lens.
2001
The purpose of the present work was to study the effect on visual performance of wearing disposable soft tinted contact lenses for cosmetic purposes. Parameters such as contrast sensitivity (Vistech 6000), colour vision (Farnsworth-Munsell 100-Hue colour test), visual fields (static Goldmann perimetry) and subjective vision (what the wearer feels while wearing the lenses) were studied under different illumination levels in order to check for possible vision losses while wearing these contact lenses at low illumination levels. Sixteen emmetropic subjects were fitted consecutively with seven pairs of different colour lenses (Optima Colors lenses by BauschLomb), and the experimental parameters…
16thIHIW: Anti-HLA alloantibodies of the of IgA isotype in re-transplant candidates
2012
Summary In this multicentre study, sera from 803 retransplant candidates, including 775 kidney transplant recipients, were analysed with regard to the presence and specificity of anti-HLA alloantibodies of the IgA isotype using a modified microsphere-based platform. Of the kidney recipients, nearly one-third (n = 237, 31%) had IgA alloantibodies. Mostly, these antibodies were found in sera that also harboured IgG alloantibodies that could be found in a total of 572 (74%) of patients. Interestingly, IgA anti-HLA antibodies were preferentially targeting HLA class I antigens in contrast to those of the IgG isotype, which targeted mostly both HLA class I and II antigens. Donor specificity of th…
Chemokines: reliable markers for diagnosis of rejection and inflammation following orthotopic liver transplantation.

Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders after solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
2018
Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders (PTLD) are a rare complication after both solid organ (SOT) and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). In this single center retrospective study, we compared clinical, biological, and histological features, and outcomes of PTLD after both types of transplant. We identified 82 PTLD (61 after SOT and 21 after allo-HSCT). The presence of B symptoms, Waldeyer ring, spleen, central nervous system, and liver involvement, and advanced Ann-Arbor stage were more frequent in allo-HSCT recipients. PTLD had an earlier onset in allo-HSCT than in SOT cohort (4 vs. 64 months, p .0001). PTLD was EBV-positive in 100% of allo-HSCT, in co…
The role of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 in orthotopic liver transplantation.
2003
Hepatic ischemia reperfusion injury as well as acute graft rejection (RE) after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) are associated with leukocyte invasion of the graft. Local synthesis of chemokines is a key reaction in the recruitment and activation of inflammatory leukocytes and consequent liver damage. In this paper we describe the role of monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1 (CCL2) in human OLT. We investigated the serum CC-chemokine levels for MCP-1 by specific ELISAs after OLT in 105 human liver allografts between September 1997 and January 2001. One hour after reperfusion we saw a significant (t test) increase of MCP-1 in peripheral blood (92.5 +/- 85.8 pg/mL to 774.2 +/- 319.…
Endothelin-1 and endothelin receptor status in kidney transplants undergoing acute rejection.
1999
Abstract Endothelin-1 (ET-1) is a potent vasoconstrictor with vasopressor and mitogenic effects. Blood samples were collected from 21 renal transplant patients undergoing acute rejection at the time of diagnostic kidney biopsy: there were 20 men and one woman, mean age 35.6 years. All patients were on triple immunosuppressive therapy with cyclosporine A, azathioprine and methylprednisolone. Twenty living kidney donors pre-uninephrectomy (11 men and nine women, mean age 34 years) served as controls. Control kidney was obtained from fresh autopsy material and normal kidney tissue from nephrectomies for malignancy. Mean plasma ET-1 was significantly increased at 1.56±0.2 pg ml −1 during acute …
Complications in Immunosuppressive Therapy of Liver Transplant Recipients
2011
BACKGROUND: In liver transplantation (LT), modern immunosuppressive protocol is focused on early corticosteroid (CS) weaning. The aim of the study was to investigate all early transplant-related complications using Clavien grading system, in order to identify a significant relation in two homogenous groups of consecutive liver transplanted patients, only different for steroid avoidance in immunosuppressive regimen. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One group was treated with a tacrolimus-based CS-free immunosuppressive protocol, the other one underwent tacrolimus plus low dose CS therapy. The preoperative continuous variables analyzed were age, gender, model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score, a…
Liver transplantation: the Italian experience
2002
Abstract Background. Liver transplantation is the standard treatment for patients with end-stage liver disease no longer responsive to conventional medical treatment Aims . To report the longterm experience of liver transplantation in Italy. Patients and Methods . Data were obtained retrospective by means of a multiple-item form collected from 15 Italian liver transplant centres. The filing centre was centralized. Results . A total of 3323 liver transplants were performed on 3026 patients, with a cumulative proportional survival of 72.4%. Three, 5 and 10 years' patient survival rates were 72.3%, 68.8% and 61.3%, respectively. The most common indication for liver transplantation were hepatit…
Analysis of interleukin-6 and interleukin-8 in lung transplantation: correlation with nitric oxide administration.
2008
Introduction and Objectives. Primary graft dysfunction (PGD) following lung transplantation (LT) is associated with an activation of the inflammatory cascade and release of cytokines. Inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) provides specific pulmonary vasodilatation and improves oxygenation. Our objective was to verify whether administering iNO to LT patients modified the blood and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) interleukin (IL)-6 and -8 levels in the event of PGD. Materials and Methods. Thirty-two LT patients were randomized to the iNO treatment or the control group. Patients in the first group were given 10 ppm of iNO from the start of LT until 48 hours afterward. BAL and peripheral arterial blood sampl…
Hepatitis B surface antigen presentation and HLA-DRB1*– lessons from twins and peptide binding studies
2005
Summary The aim of this study was to investigate the underlying mechanisms of the genetic association between certain HLA-DRB1* alleles and the immune response to HBsAg vaccination. Therefore, HBsAg peptide binding to HLA-DR molecules was measured in vitro by peptide binding ELISAs. Additionally, HBsAg-specific T cell reaction and cytokine profile of immune response were analysed ex vivo in ELISPOT assays and DR-restriction of T-cell proliferative responses was investigated with HBsAg specific T cell clones. In addition, we compared HBsAg specific T cell responses of 24 monozygotic and 3 dizygotic twin pairs after HBsAg vaccination. Our results showed that the peptide binding assays did not…
