Somatic symptoms in the Eastern and Western states of Germany 30 years after unification: Population-based survey analyses.

2021

Background Following German reunification, physical health indicators in the formerly separated states (German Democratic Republic- East/ Federal Republic of Germany-West) have converged. However, it remains unclear how these societal changes have impacted somatic complaints, a major indicator of physical and mental health. Therefore, we investigated how somatic symptom reporting in men and women evolved regarding residency. Methods We administered cross-sectional surveys representative of the German population with comparable sample size in 1994 (N = 3047), 2001 (N = 2050), 2013 (N = 2508) and 2019 (N = 2531) following random route procedure. Men and women aged 14-99 reported demographics …

Fever of Unclear Origin and Cytopenia Because of Acute Splenic Sequestration in a Young Immunocompetent Carrier of Beta-Globin Mutation for Hb Vallet…

2008

Fever of unclear origin is a clinical challenge in medical practice. Infectious diseases, neoplasms, and collagen vascular illnesses are its main causes in adults and children. Acute splenic sequestration crises, a known potentially fatal complication of sickle cell disease and sickle beta-thalassemia, are uncommon in beta-heterozygosis. We describe a case of prolonged recurrent episodes of fever with spontaneous resolution, commencing at age 10 in a 15-year-old boy with a history of hypochromic microcytic anemia attributed to a thalassemic trait. He was admitted twice to our university hospital for continuous-remittent fever with a pruritic, macular evanescent Still's skin rash, severe spl…

The impact of two whole blood inline filters on markers of coagulation, complement and cell activation

2005

Background and Objectives  There exists a current lack of information about the impact of different inline filters, used for the leucoreduction of whole blood (WB), on the levels of clotting factors and markers of coagulation, complement and cell activation in plasma. Only a few small comparisons of different types of WB inline filters have been published to date. Materials and Methods  This study compared two plasma types of 200 units each. Both study groups were derived from WB, inline-filtered and held for 2 h at 20° between donation and filtration. Then, 200 units (Group A) were filtered using a positively charged polyester filter (Baxter RZ2000) and the other 200 units (Group B) were f…

Pharmacokinetic Interactions of Clozapine With Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors

1998

Pharmacokinetic interactions of clozapine and its metabolites N-desmethylclozapine and clozapine N-oxide with the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) fluvoxamine and paroxetine were investigated in a prospective study in schizophrenic patients under steady-state conditions. Thirty patients were treated with clozapine at a target dose of 2.5 to 3.0 mg/kg of body weight. After gradual dose escalation, serum concentrations of clozapine and two metabolites were determined twice at 7-day intervals after steady-state conditions had been reached. Then, fluvoxamine (50 mg/day) or paroxetine (20 mg/day) was added in 16 and 14 patients, respectively. Serum concentrations of clozapine and …

Fluvoxamine or placebo in the treatment of panic disorder and relationship to blood concentrations of fluvoxamine.

1998

A six-week double-blind placebo-controlled trial of fluvoxamine was undertaken in 46 patients suffering from panic disorder with or without agoraphobia diagnosed by DSM-III-R guidelines. Average daily dosage of fluvoxamine was 160 mg, with a highest permitted dose of 300 mg/day. Weekly evaluation included a diary in which the number, severity, and duration of full-blown and limited panic attacks and the duration and severity of anticipating fear, CAS, GAS, CGI, HAM-D, adverse effects and the number of capsules not taken were noted. Fluvoxamine was not significantly superior to placebo with regard to the main outcome criterion, i.e., the reduction in the number of panic attacks, but it was s…

Food packaging cues as vehicles of healthy information: Visions of millennials (early adults and adolescents)

2018

Abstract Because packaging has become an important marketing tool, firms must know what type of packaging can affect consumers' packaging cues. Also, still today there is little attention paid to the relevance of educating millennials about the importance of a healthier lifestyle and eating. The aim is to analyse the effects of young consumers with varying degrees of healthy lifestyles and food involvement on packaging cues. Also, the paper analyses differences between early adults and adolescents millennials. Using a sample of 890 millennials (300 early adults and 590 adolescents) and SEM methodology, interesting results are reached. Some healthy habits affect food involvement, and this is…

Phenotype associated with TAF2 biallelic mutations: a clinical description of four individuals and review of the literature

2021

International audience; Transcription factor IID is a multimeric protein complex that is essential for the initiation of transcription by RNA polymerase II. One of its critical components, the TATA-binding protein-associated factor 2, is encoded by the gene TAF2. Pathogenic variants of this gene have been shown to be responsible for the Mental retardation, autosomal recessive 40 syndrome. This syndrome is characterized by severe intellectual disability, postnatal microcephaly, pyramidal signs and thin corpus callosum. Until now, only three families have been reported separately. Here we report four individuals, from two unrelated families, who present with severe intellectual disability and…

Lexical prediction via forward models: N400 evidence from German Sign Language

2013

Models of language processing in the human brain often emphasize the prediction of upcoming input for example in order to explain the rapidity of language understanding. However, the precise mechanisms of prediction are still poorly understood. Forward models, which draw upon the language production system to setup expectations during comprehension, provide a promising approach in this regard. Here, we present an event- related potential (ERP) study on German Sign Language (DGS) which tested the hypotheses of a forward model perspective on prediction. Sign languages involve relatively long transition phases between one sign and the next, which should be anticipated as part of a forward model-…

A clinical evaluation of the DSM-5 criteria for Internet Gaming Disorder and a pilot study on their applicability to further Internet-related disorde…

2019

Background and aims Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) and other Internet-related disorders (IRDs) have become growing health concerns in our today’s lives. Based on defined diagnostic criteria, IGD has been recognized as a condition for further research in the DSM-5; however, other IRDs have been excluded. Since the release of the DSM-5, representativeness and appropriateness of the nine diagnostic criteria have been debated. Although some first evidence has been published to evaluate these criteria, our knowledge is still limited. Thus, the purpose of this study was to provide data on the clinical validity of the DSM-5 criteria for IGD and other types of IRD. We were also interested in exami…
