Dietary Habits, Diet Quality, Nutrition Knowledge, and Associations with Physical Activity in Polish Prisoners: A Pilot Study
2022
Physical activity and healthy diets are determinants of the health of convicts who are deprived of freedom. However, little research has focused on these two aspects concurrently. The aim of this study is to analyze the relationships between the level of prisoners’ physical activity and their dietary habits, diet quality, and nutritional knowledge. The cross-sectional study was conducted with 226 prisoners. The inclusion criteria included male sex, age 18–65 years, and consent for the research. We excluded the subjects who met any of the following conditions: female sex, unwillingness to participate, and dangerous prisoner status. The KomPAN questionnaire was used to assess the …
Optical noninvasive monitoring of skin blood pulsations
2005
Time-resolved detection and analysis of skin backscattered optical signals (remission photoplethysmography or PPG) provide rich information on skin blood volume pulsations and can serve for reliable cardiovascular assessment. Single- and multiple-channel PPG concepts are discussed. Simultaneous data flow from several locations on the human body allows us to study heartbeat pulse-wave propagation in real time and to evaluate vascular resistance. Portable single-, dual-, and four-channel PPG monitoring devices with special software have been designed for real-time data acquisition and processing. The prototype devices have been clinically studied, and their potential for monitoring heart arrh…
Correlation of cerebral blood flow and MCA flow velocity measured in healthy volunteers during acetazolamide and CO2 stimulation
1995
Abstract The assessment of the cerebrovascular reserve capacity (RC) has become a widely used tool in the management of cerebrovascular disease. Discrepancies become obvious, however, if results obtained with different methods are compared. Aim of the present study, therefore, was to compare blood velocity and cerebral perfusion data in the same group of healthy test persons. In 32 volunteers regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was measured with the 133 Xe-inhalation method. F1 as grey matter flow and the initial slope index (ISI) were computed. Simultaneously flow velocity in the middle cerebral artery (V MCA ) was assessed by transcranial Doppler sonography (TCD). Measurements were perfor…
LKM-1 autoantibodies recognize a short linear sequence in P450IID6, a cytochrome P-450 monooxygenase.
1991
LKM-1 autoantibodies, which are associated with autoimmune chronic active hepatitis, recognize P450IID6, a cytochrome P-450 monooxygenase. The reactivities of 26 LKM-1 antisera were tested with a panel of deletion mutants of P450IID6 expressed in Escherichia coli. 22 sera recognize a 33-amino acid segment of P450IID6, and 11 of these recognize a shorter segment, DPAQPPRD. PAQPPR is also found in IE175 of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). Antibodies for HSV-1 proteins were detected by ELISA in 17 of 20 LKM-1 sera tested. An immobilized, synthetic peptide, DPAQPPRDC, was used to purify LKM-1 antibodies. Affinity purified LKM-1 autoantibodies react on immunoblots with a protein in BHK cells…
Autoantibodies against the human asialoglycoprotein receptor: Effects of therapy in autoimmune and virus-induced chronic active hepatitis
1993
The hepatic asialoglycoprotein receptor (ASGPR) was recently identified as a target antigen for both humoral and cellular immune response in inflammatory liver diseases. Thereby anti-ASGPR autoantibodies directed against human substrate were closely associated with autoimmune chronic active hepatitis. The present study compares the occurrence, titer and immunoglobulin classification of anti-human(h-)-ASGPR antibodies in 23 patients with newly diagnosed autoimmune chronic hepatitis before and after initiation of immunosuppressive therapy to 22 patients with autoimmune hepatitis in remission. Additionally, 1-year follow-up examinations of 42 patients with HBsAg-positive chronic hepatitis and …
Frequency and phenotype of SPG11 and SPG15 in complicated hereditary spastic paraplegia
2009
Background: Hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSP) are clinically and genetically highly heterogeneous. Recently, two novel genes, SPG11 ( spatacsin ) and SPG15 ( spastizin ), associated with autosomal recessive HSP, were identified. Clinically, both are characterised by complicated HSP and a rather similar phenotype consisting of early onset spastic paraplegia, cognitive deficits, thin corpus callosum (TCC), peripheral neuropathy and mild cerebellar ataxia. Objective: To compare the frequency of SPG11 and SPG15 in patients with early onset complicated HSP and to further characterise the phenotype of SPG11 and SPG15. Results: A sample of 36 index patients with early onset complicated HSP and …
Large-scale network architecture and associated structural cortico-subcortical abnormalities in patients with sleep/awake-related seizures.
2019
Study objectives In this study, we aimed to estimate the alterations of brain networks and structural integrity linked to seizure occurrence during sleep and awake states. Methods Using a graph theory approach to magnetic resonance imaging-derived volumes of cortical and subcortical regions, we investigated the topological organization of structural networks in patients with sleep seizures (n = 13), patients with awake seizures (n = 12), and age- and sex-matched healthy controls (n = 10). Abnormalities in regional structural substrates (cortical volume/surface area, subcortical volumes) associated with sleep seizures and awake seizures were further analyzed. Results Brain networks in patien…
Evaluation of the prognostic role of tumour-associated macrophages in newly diagnosed classical hodgkin lymphoma and correlation with early FDG-PET a…
2017
In Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL), about 20% of patients still have relapsed/refractory disease and late toxic effects rate continue to rise with time. 'Early FDG-PET' and tissue macrophage infiltration (TAM) emerged as powerful prognostic predictors. The primary endpoint was to investigate the prognostic role of both early FDG-PET and TAM; the secondary endpoint was to test if early FDG-PET positivity could correlate with high TAM score. A cohort of 200 HL patients was analysed. Induction treatment plan consisted of two to six courses of ABVD and, if indicated, involved field radiation therapy. All patients repeated CT scan and FDG-PET after two cycles and after the completion of therapy. TAM in di…
The picture superiority effect in associative memory: A developmental study.
2018
We tested whether semantic relatedness between to-be-remembered items and item presentation format (pictorial vs. verbal) affects associative recall. Fifty-nine children (11-13 years old) and forty young adults (age 18-30) completed a learning and recall task for semantically related (e.g., padlock-key) and unrelated (e.g., lemon-piano) picture-picture, word-picture, and word-word pairs. The data revealed memory advantage for semantically related item pairs, and for pictures compared to words. A picture superiority effect was found exclusively for pure picture pairs. Despite pronounced differences in memory accuracy, the effect of semantic relatedness and the picture superiority effect were…
Resources to cope with stigma related to HIV status, gender identity, and sexual orientation in gay men and transgender women
2017
The stigma related to HIV status, gender identity, and sexual orientation has negative implications for the quality of life of individuals. A qualitative study was conducted to explore the resources that these stigmatized groups recognize as tools to cope with stigma and maintain their psychological well-being. Four focus groups were conducted with gay men and transgender women divided by HIV status. A thematic analysis revealed that individual, interpersonal, and institutional resources are commonly recognized as coping resources. This article discusses the importance of enhancing self-acceptance, social support, and a legal framework that legitimizes these groups as right holders.
