Effect of Incubation Body Mass on Reproductive Success and Survival of Two European Diving Ducks: A Test of the Nutrient Limitation Hypothesis
1997
The nutrient limitation hypothesis postulates that variation in nutrient reserves during egg laying and incubation are important predictors of future reproductive success of female waterfowl. We tested one component of this hypothesis in two European diving ducks, Common Pochard (Aythya ferina) and Tufted Duck (Aythya fuligula), relating body masses of incubating females to subsequent nest success, and to duckling and adult survival. We based our analyses on 3,224 Common Pochards and 1,812 Tufted Ducks captured and weighed during the last two weeks before ducklings hatched at Engure Marsh, Latvia, in 1978-1993. Adult (ASY) females from successful nests weighed significantly more than those …
Calcium Phosphate-Coated Titanium Implants in the Mandible: Limitations of the in vivo Minipig Model
2020
Introduction: We aimed to compare implant osseointegration with calcium phosphate (CaP) surfaces and rough subtractive-treated sandblasted/acid etched surfaces (SA) in an in vivo minipig mandible model. Materials and Methods: A total of 36 cylindrical press-fit implants with two different surfaces (CaP, n = 18; SA, n = 18) were inserted bilaterally into the mandible of 9 adult female minipigs. After 2, 4, and 8 weeks, we analyzed the cortical bone-to-implant contact (cBIC; %) and area coverage of bone-to-implant contact within representative bone chambers (aBIC; %). <…
Early human peopling of Sicily: Evidence from the Mesolithic skeletal remains from Grotta d'Oriente
2010
The site of Grotta d'Oriente, Island of Favignana, Sicily has yielded the complete skeleton of an adult female (OB) dated to the Mesolithic age. The cranial morphometry of this individual can provide us with some useful information about the peopling of Sicily in the Early Holocene period.Morphological affinities of OB and other Sicilian Mesolithic specimens were assessed to verify hypotheses concerning the early peopling of Sicily.Craniofacial metric data were employed in a comparative analysis with European Upper Palaeolithic (UP), Mesolithic, Neolithic, and Copper/Bronze age samples, and contemporary Italians. Both a model-free and a model-bound approach were used not only to calculate c…
Corrigendum: Wired for motherhood: induction of maternal care but not maternal aggression in virgin female CD1 mice
2015
Virgin adult female mice display nearly spontaneous maternal care towards foster pups after a short period of sensitization. This indicates that maternal care is triggered by sensory stimulation provided by the pups and that its onset is largely independent on the physiological events related to gestation, parturition and lactation. Conversely, the factors influencing maternal aggression are poorly understood. In this study, we sought to characterize two models of maternal sensitization in the outbred CD1 strain. To do so, a group of virgin females (godmothers) were exposed to continuous cohabitation with a lactating dam and their pups from the moment of parturition, whereas a second group …
A moment within the psychoanalytic psychotherapy of an adult female patient – The meanings of nonverbal and bodily expressions
2020
This case study adresses the multiple meanings of a moment of strong non-verbal and bodily expression within a course of psychoanalytic psychotherapy. One therapy session was video-recorded in the ...
