PEG IFN alfa-2a vs. alfa-2b: And the winner is …?

2009

Abstract Peginterferon alfa-2b or alfa-2a with ribavirin for treatment of hepatitis C infection. McHutchison JG, Lawitz EJ, Shiffman ML, Muir AJ, Galler GW, McCone J, Nyberg LM, Lee WM, Ghalib RH, Schiff ER, Galati JS, Bacon BR, Davis MN, Mukhopadhyay P, Koury K, Noviello S, Pedicone LD, Brass CA, Albrecht JK, Sulkowski MS; IDEAL Study Team. N Engl J Med 2009 Aug 6;361(6):580–93. Background Treatment guidelines recommend the use of peginterferon alfa-2b or peginterferon alfa-2a in combination with ribavirin for chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. However, these regimens have not been adequately compared. Methods At 118 sites, patients who had HCV genotype 1 infection and who had not …

EFFICACY AND SAFETY OF OZONE THERAPY FOR PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC HEPATITIS B: A MULTICENTER, RANDOMIZED CLINICAL TRIAL

2018

Background. Ozone therapy has a long history. Some studies proved that ozone therapy was useful in treatment of virus hepatitis. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of new medical ozone therapy system for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B. Method. One hundred eighty-nine patients with chronic hepatitis B were included in this open-label, phase 3 study, and randomly assigned to receive ozone autohemotherapy with experimental ozone generator TianYi (group 1) or with ozone generator Humares (group 2) or oral diammonium glycyrrhizinate capsules (group 3) in a 1:1:1 ratio for 12 weeks. The primary efficacy end point was sera HBV DNA level of less than 1×103 IU/ml or having a more t…

Erythema multiforme induced by alendronate sodium in a geriatric patient: A case report and review of the literature

2017

Erythema multiforme is an uncommon acute inflammatory disorder caused by exposure to microbes or drugs. Erythema multiforme minor typically affects only one mucosa and can be associated with symmetrical target skin lesions on the extremities. The disease usually occurs in patients in their 3rd and 4th decade of life, but can also affect children and adolescents. Alendronate sodium has been approved for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, but is associated with adverse events. This study reports and discusses a case of erythema multiforme minor. In addition, a literature search of articles published in PubMed-Medline was performed. The case was a 96-year-old…

Microwave-induced thermoablation with Amica-probe is a safe and reproducible method to treat solid renal masses: results from a phase I study.

2012

Microwave thermal ablation (MWTA) could be considered in the future for treating small solid renal masses. The aim of the present study was to determine both the tolerability of the new Amica-probe applicator-induced MWTA used in vivo on patients with solid renal masses and the effects of heating on renal tumors and normal renal parenchyma. Fourteen patients with renal masses eligible for open radical nephrectomy were enrolled in this phase I study. All patients underwent MWTA of renal masses during the open surgery procedure before clamping of renal vascular pedicle. The effects of MWTA on patients' coagulation and tumor/renal vasculature were investigated. The histological effects of MWTA…

Luspatercept Treatment Leads to Long Term Increases in Hemoglobin and Reductions in Transfusion Burden in Patients with Low or Intermediate-1 Risk My…

2015

Background: Luspatercept is a fusion protein (modified activin receptor IIB-IgG Fc) being investigated for the treatment of anemias with ineffective erythropoiesis. MDS patients have increased Smad2/3 signaling in the bone marrow, leading to ineffective erythropoiesis. Luspatercept inhibits Smad2/3 signaling and promotes late-stage erythroid differentiation, thereby correcting the ineffective erythropoiesis. Aims: This is an ongoing, phase 2, multicenter, open-label, 24-month extension study (following a 3-month base study) to evaluate the longer-term effects of luspatercept on anemia in patients (pts) with low/int-1 risk MDS (IPSS classification). Study outcomes include erythroid response…

ADVERSE EFFECTS OF GONADOTROPINS USED IN INFERTILITY TREATMENT

2019

Introduction: Infertility represents a problem for more and more couples all over the world, including in Romania. Thus, more and more women need to resort to drugs to treat infertility, treatments which are not without adverse reactions (Boivin et al., 2007). Modern therapy brings significant benefits in the treatment of infertility. Despite all the benefits, the controlled ovarian stimulation treatment does not lack the possibility of adverse reactions to the administered drugs.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the potential adverse reactions experienced by patients during the treatment with gonadotropins followed by assisted conception

Adaptación transcultural al español y validez de contenido de 3 escalas de riesgo nutricional

2022

Introduction: There are various scales designed to determine the risk of malnutrition at hospital admission in children. However, most of these instruments are developed and published in English. Their cross-cultural adaptation and validation being mandatory in order to be used in our country. Objectives: Cross-culturally adapt three scales designed to determine the risk of malnutrition linked to the disease and determine the validity of their content. Material and methods: Cross-cultural adaptation using the translation-back-translation met-hod in accordance with the recommendations of the International Test Commission Guidelines for Translating and Adapting Tests. Content validity was mea…

Learning from the past: Mitomycin C use in trabeculectomy and its application in bleb-forming minimally invasive glaucoma surgery.

2019

Trabeculectomy has been performed since the mid-1960s and remains the gold standard for glaucoma surgery. Newer surgical options have evolved, collectively referred to as minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries. Despite producing large intraocular pressure decreases, full-thickness procedures into the subconjunctival space may be limited by fibrosis. Mitomycin C (MMC) and 5-fluorouracil have been in use with trabeculectomy with good evidence of significantly increased success at the cost, however, of an increased risk of complications. Off-label MMC application can be found in almost all clinical trials, including in combination with minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries. We explore current e…

Association of mechanical bowel preparation with oral antibiotics and anastomotic leak following left sided colorectal resection: an international, m…

2018

INTRODUCTION: The optimal bowel preparation strategy to minimise the risk of anastomotic leak is yet to be determined. This study aimed to determine whether oral antibiotics combined with mechanical bowel preparation (MBP+Abx) was associated with a reduced risk of anastomotic leak when compared to mechanical bowel preparation alone (MBP) or no bowel preparation (NBP).METHODS: A pre-planned analysis of the European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP) 2017 Left Sided Colorectal Resection audit was performed. Patients undergoing elective left sided colonic or rectal resection with primary anastomosis between 1 January 2017 and 15 March 2017 by any operative approach were included. The primary out…
