Activation of the contact-phase system on bacterial surfaces--a clue to serious complications in infectious diseases.
1998
Fever, hypotension and bleeding disorders are common symptoms of sepsis and septic shock. The activation of the contact-phase system is thought to contribute to the development of these severe disease states by triggering proinflammatory and procoagulatory cascades; however, the underlying molecular mechanisms are obscure. Here we report that the components of the contact-phase system are assembled on the surface of Escherichia coli and Salmonella through their specific interactions with fibrous bacterial surface proteins, curli and fimbriae. As a consequence, the proinflammatory pathway is activated through the release of bradykinin, a potent inducer of fever, pain and hypotension. Absorpt…
Analysis of steady state thermal-hydraulic behaviour of the DEMO Divertor cassette body cooling circuit
2017
Abstract Within the framework of the Work Package DIV 1 – “Divertor Cassette Design and Integration” of the EUROfusion action, a research campaign has been jointly carried out by ENEA and University of Palermo to investigate the thermal-hydraulic performances of the DEMO divertor cassette cooling system. A comparative evaluation study has been performed considering the two different options under consideration for the divertor cassette body coolant, namely subcooled pressurized water and helium. The research activity has been carried out following a theoretical-computational approach based on the finite volume method and adopting a qualified Computational Fluid-Dynamic (CFD) code. CFD analy…
Flow hydraulic characteristics determining the occurrence of either smooth or abrupt sewer pressurization
2014
Laboratory experiments showed that pipe pressurization consequent on a drastic reduction in the downstream discharge can occur either by a gradual rising of the free-surface (“smooth” pressurization) or by propagation of a front filling the whole cross-section (“abrupt” pressurization). This study examines the free-surface flow characteristics that determine smooth or abrupt pressurization pattern through a theoretical approach using dimensionless variables. A critical flow rate value, which separates the pressurization patterns, exists for any given pipe diameter. For flow rates higher than this specific value, only abrupt pressurization occurs. For lower flow rates, either smooth or abrup…
Determination of the Soret coefficient of magnetic particles in a ferrofluid from the steady and unsteady part of the separation curve
2004
Experiments on the particle separation in a vertical thermodiffusion column are used to investigate the separation (Soret effect) in ferrofluids. The use of a two-sectional column with internal walls of low thermal capacity allows analyzing the initial part of the unsteady separation curves as well as the steady state regime. The Soret coefficient calculated from the measurements of the separation dynamics agrees well with the one found from the steady separation limit reached in long-time experiments especially if the solutal buoyancy is low.
Application of plant extracts to improve the shelf-life, nutritional and health-related properties of ready-to-eat meat products.
2018
Plant extracts are increasingly becoming important additives in food industry due to their antimicrobial and antioxidant abilities that delay the development of off-flavors and improve the color stability in ready-to-eat (RTE) meat products. Due to their natural origin, they are excellent candidates to replace synthetic molecules, which are generally considered to have toxicological and carcinogenic effects. The efficient extraction of these antioxidant molecules from their natural sources, along with the determination of their activity in the commercialized products, have been a great challenge for researchers and food chain contributors. The objective of this review is to highlight the ap…
Combining reformulation, active packaging and non-thermal post-packaging decontamination technologies to increase the microbiological quality and saf…
2018
Abstract Background Cooked ready-to-eat (RTE) meat products are subjected to contamination of spoilage microorganisms such as lactic acid bacteria and pathogens such as Listeria monocytogenes. These microorganisms contaminate cooked RTE meat products after the cooking step and may further grow during shelf-life potentially leading to spoilage or foodborne diseases, respectively. In the current context of salt, fat and chemical preservatives reduction in meat products formulations, a combined strategy that considers the development of more robust formulations, active packaging and the use of non-thermal post-packaging decontamination strategies seems required to ensure shelf-stable and safe …
Fundusz Medyczny - organizacja i zasady gospodarki finansowej
2021
Steady State Performance of Spark Ignition Engine with Exhaust Energy Recovery
2020
As is known, internal combustion engines based on Otto or Diesel cycles cannot complete the expansion process of the gas inside the cylinder, thus losing a relevant energy content, in the order of 30% of total. The residual energy of the unexpanded gas has been partially exploited through the use of an exhaust gas turbine for turbocharging the internal combustion engine; further attempts have been made with several compound solutions, with an electric generator connected to the turbocharger allowing to convert into electrical energy the quota power produced by the turbine which is not used by the compressor, or with a second turbine downstream the first to increase the exhaust gas energy re…
Structural features of the human bradykinin B2 receptor probed by agonists, antagonists, and anti-idiotypic antibodies
1993
The human bradykinin B2 receptor belongs to the family of G-protein-coupled receptors. To characterize the receptor protein, we have solubilized the membranes of cultured human foreskin fibroblasts bearing the B2 receptor. Affinity cross-linking of the solubilized receptor with the labeled agonist, 125I-Tyr0-bradykinin, or the labeled antagonist, 125I-(4-hydroxy-phenyl-propionyl)-HOE140, revealed major bands of apparent molecular mass of 69 kDa in SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis under reducing conditions, and of 59 kDa under non-reducing conditions. A 1000-fold molar excess of each of the unlabeled ligands quenched the specific labeling suggesting that the agonist and the antagonist …
Crescere in IPM.
