Abstract An expert control structure is proposed for the control of dissolved oxygen (DO) in a Nitrification Denitrification Biological Excess Phosphorus Removal (NDBEPR) plant to account for the several processes that are influenced by the DO concentration in the aerator. In the scheme a supervisory fuzzy controller determines the set point of an inner DO control loop where an Adaptive Robust Generic Model Control (ARGMC) controller is used. This paper presents a computer tool called DSC (Simulation based Controllers Design) that enables an easy design of control systems and strategies applied to wastewater treatment plants. Although the control systems are developed and evaluated by simulation, this tool aims to facilitate the direct implementation of the designed control system to the PC of the full-scale WWTP (wastewater treatment plants). The designed control system can be programmed in a dedicated control application and can be connected to either the simulation software or the SCADA of the plant. Seven operational mishaps were specified on the basis of a questionnaire on wastewater treatment plants, some of them large. In this study a process was developed for screening the chemical spill risks to municipal biological sewage treatment plant. Energy saving in the aeration process by fuzzy logic control

An aeration fuzzy logic based control system has been developed and tested in the main aerobic reactor of a BARDENPHO process pilot plant. This system has been compared with two ordinary aeration process controllers: one- and two-aeration-level on/off controllers. Energy savings of about 40% over the one-level on/off controller and a more stable closed-loop response have been obtained. Thus, an improvement of about 60% in average deviation can be accomplished by the use of an AFLBC.

The studied micropollutants were 4-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)phenol (OP), technical-nonylphenol (t-NP), 4-n-nonylphenol (4-NP), Bisphenol-A (BPA). In order to study the effect of the three variables on the micropollutants removal, a factorial design was developed. The experiments were carried out in four batch reactors which treated the effluent of an anaerobic membrane bioreactor. Weathering of gasification and grate bottom ash in anaerobic conditions

Abstract The effect of anaerobic conditions on weathering of gasification and grate bottom ash were studied in laboratory lysimeters. The two parallel lysimeters containing the same ash were run in anaerobic conditions for 322 days, after which one was aerated for 132 days. The lysimeters were watered throughout the study and the quality of leachates and changes in the binding of elements into ash were observed. The results show that organic carbon content and initial moisture of ashes are the key parameters affecting the weathering of ashes. A fuzzy logic supervisory control system for optimising nitrogen removal and aeration energy consumption has been developed. This control system allows optimising and controlling the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration in the aerobic reactors, the blowers discharge pressure and the effluent ammonia and nitrate concentrations. DO is controlled by adjusting control valve opening and blower discharge pressure is controlled by modifying rotational speed of the blowers. The influence of the main operational variables on N2O emissions from an Integrated Fixed Film Activated Sludge University of Cape Town membrane Bioreactor pilot plant was studied. Nine operational cycles (total duration: 340 days) were investigated by varying the value of the mixed liquor sludge retention time (SRT) (Cycles 1â3), the feeding ratio between carbon and nitrogen (C/N) (Cycles 4â6) and simultaneously the hydraulic retention time (HRT) and the SRT (Cycles 7â9). Results show a huge variability of the N2O concentration in liquid and off-gas samples (ranged from 10â1μg N2O-N Lâ1to 103μg N2O-N Lâ1).
