Composting of bio-waste, aerobic and anaerobic sludges – Effect of feedstock on the process and quality of compost
2011
In-vessel composting of three stocks with originally different degree of organic matter degradation was conducted for: (1) kitchen source-separated bio-waste (BW), (2) aerobic (AS) as well as (3) anaerobic sludges (AnS) from municipal wastewater treatment plant. Composting experiment lasted over a year. The highest activity of the process was in the BW compost. It was implied by the highest temperature, CO(2) release, ammonification and nitrification, intensive accumulation and removal of low-weight carboxylic acids (water- and NaOH-extractable). Between the sludges higher mineralization and CO2 release was in AnS, while ammonification and nitrification were higher in AS compost; no signifi…
Bacterial community analysis of a gas-phase biotrickling filter for biogas mimics desulfurization through the rRNA approach
2010
Abstract The bacterial composition of a lab-scale biotrickling filter (BTF) treating high loads of H 2 S was investigated by the rRNA approach. Two 16S rRNA gene clone libraries were established 42 and 189 d after reactor startup, while fluorescent in-situ hybridization (FISH) with DNA probes was performed throughout 260 d of reactor operation. Diversity, community structure and metamorphosis were studied from reactor startup to fully-established pseudo-steady state operation at near neutral pH and at an inlet H 2 S concentration of 2000 ppmv (load of 55.6 g H 2 S m −3 h −1 ). In addition, FISH was used for assessing the spatial distribution of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) along the len…
Latvijā ražotu lūpu balzāmu mikrobioloģiskais novērtējums to lietošanas laikā
2017
Maģistra darbs tika izstrādāts mikrobioloģijas testēšanas laboratorijā SIA “J.S. Hamilton Baltic”. Mikroorganismu skaits lūpu balzāmos to lietošanas laikā variēja robežās no 800-9000 KVV/g, raugi un pelējumsēnes sastādīja …
Effects of Humic Substances and Soya Lecithin on the Aerobic Bioremediation of a Soil Historically Contaminated by Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (…
2004
The high hydrophobicity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) strongly reduces their bioavailability in aged contaminated soils, thus limiting their bioremediation. The biodegradation of PAHs in soils can be enhanced by employing surface-active agents. However, chemical surfactants are often recalcitrant and exert toxic effects in the amended soils. The effects of two biogenic materials as pollutant-mobilizing agents on the aerobic bioremediation of an aged-contaminated soil were investigated here. A soil historically contaminated by about 13 g kg(-1) of a large variety of PAHs, was amended with soya lecithin (SL) or humic substances (HS) at 1.5% w/w and incubated in aerobic solid-phas…
