Long term analysis of the columnar and surface aerosol relationship at an urban European coastal site

Abstract Simultaneous PM2.5, PM10 and columnar (ground and satellite based) AOD measurements have been analyzed at Burjassot site in the metropolitan area of Valencia (Spain) during the period 2007–2016. The site is representative of a south European city in the Western Mediterranean coastal area, influenced by local urban pollution but also from frequent Saharan dust events. First, multiannual statistics were performed to characterize the main aerosol burden characteristics. A method for the atmospheric correction of ENVISAT/MERIS data over land targets

An atmospheric correction algorithm for the retrieval of land surface reflectance from imagery acquired by the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) on-board the European Space Agency (ESA) ENVIronmental SATellite (ENVISAT) platform has been implemented. The algorithm is designed to estimate the main atmospheric parameters needed in the correction, aerosol and water vapour contents, from the image itself, leading to an optimal characterization of the atmospheric state at the time of image acquisition. This paper aims to test a method for estimating daily values of atmospheric turbidity from non-specialized data, such as those obtained from agro-meteorological stations. This method allows estimating the spatial and temporal evolution of aerosols concentration in more places than just those in which direct measurements are available. The method is based on the Corrected Yang Hybrid Model (CYHM). Abstract An automatic global and direct solar spectral irradiance system has been designed based on two LICOR spectroradiometers equipped with fibre optics and remote cosine sensors. To measure direct irradiance a sun tracker based on step motors has been developed. The whole system is autonomous and works continuously. From the measurements provided by this system a spectral irradiance database in the 330–1100 nm range has been created. This database contains normal direct and global horizontal irradiances as well as diffuse irradiance on a horizontal plane, together with total atmospheric optical thickness and aerosol optical depth.
Application of the SKYRAD Improved Langley plot method for the in situ calibration of CIMEL Sun-sky photometers

The in situ procedure for determining the solar calibration constants, originally developed for the PREDE Sun-sky radiometers and based on a modified version of the Langley plot, was applied to a CIMEL instrument located in Valencia, Spain, not integrated into AERONET. Taking into account the different mechanical and electronic characteristics of the two radiometers, the method was adapted to the characteristics of the CIMEL instrument. An algorithm for the derivation of atmospheric parameters and surface reflectance data from MEdium Resolution Imaging Specrometer Instrument (MERIS) on board ENVIronmental SATellite (ENVISAT) images has been developed. Geo-rectified aerosol optical thickness (AOT), columnar water vapor (CWV) and spectral surface reflectance maps are generated from MERIS Level-1b data over land. The algorithm has been implemented so that AOT, CWV and reflectance products are provided on an operational manner, making no use of ancillary parameters apart from those attached to MERIS products. Abstract We propose to evaluate the calibration of MERIS (MEdium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer) over dark waters in the near infrared. We work with 5 months of data, from July to November 2003, over five world sites: Venice and Lampedusa in Italy, El Arenosillo in Spain, MOBY/Lanai and CalCOFI/San Nicolas in the United States. The sites are all equipped with a CIMEL station that forms part of the AERONET network. The basic idea is to associate CIMEL sky radiance measurements with MERIS level-1b data in a twin geometry which corresponds to the same scattering angle. The Mediterranean basin is characterized by large concentrations of aerosols from both natural and anthropogenic sources. These aerosols affect tropospheric photochemistry by modulating the photolytic rates. Three simulations of the atmospheric composition at basin scale have been performed with the CHIMERE chemistry-transport model for the period from 6 June to 15 July 2013 covered by the ADRIMED campaign, a campaign of intense measurements in the western Mediterranean basin. Abstract. An unprecedented extreme Saharan dust event was registered in winter time from 20 to 23 February 2017 over the Iberian Peninsula (IP). We report on aerosol optical properties observed under this extreme dust outbreak through remote sensing (active and passive) techniques. For that, EARLINET (European Aerosol Research LIdar NETwork) lidar and AERONET (AErosol RObotic NETwork) Sun-photometer Cimel CE 318 measurements are used.
